Based on the CE, which I’ve played three times so far. :) Here a slightly adapted review:
What a spectacular game! The opening video wins the „Oscar“ for the best intro of the year! I had to exit and restart the game to see it again.
"Key to Ravenhearst" has all the elements I enjoy in a game: A good story, super atmosphere, great visuals, perfectly flowing game play, things to discover with your cursor, quite challenging puzzles and HOs, great voice acting, superb details in artwork and sound effects. Listen to the raindrops on the beach or the squeaking sound of the metal brush on the buoy. Furthermore references to the former installments of the Ravenhearst and Madam Fate games. I recognized several mini games from „Return to Ravenhearst“, here they come with a fresh look.
The incredible scenery, orchestral soundtrack - and, at least for me, the Return of Humour to this series, all these elements contribute towards a great gaming experience.
The game has exceeded my expectations! MCF had lost me after the „13th Skull“, but now I’m back and hoping for new stories. Mystery Case Files deserved a fresh breeze! Very well done!!!
The main story ends conclusively, the Bonus Chapter is a prequel to what happens in the main game. If you’re not that much into achievements, collectibles, replaying HO’s and puzzles, you’re fine with the Standard Edition.
For me, a good game is like good food. I love food, enjoy cooking and eating out. And I like trying new dishes, new spices, new ingredients.
MCF Key to Ravenhearst was a feast, something very special, you don’t have it every week, not even every month. Yet, four weeks later another feast was served: MCF Ravenhearst Unlocked.
First I’ve gobbled the new game up, I wanted to know how the story continues, I wanted to beat the game too quickly. And I felt too full too soon. That was a mistake, so I created a new profile and played, as others have suggested, very slowly and in short installments. This is slow, not fast food. Luckily, I didn’t experience any glitches eating from, hm, playing on iMac, Yosemite.
Now I was able to enjoy this 7-course menu, to taste, appreciate and digest all the different ingredients, from the „amuse-bouche“, the captivating opening, on to the main and the intermediate courses to the dessert: Fantastic scenery and sound, the variations of HO’s, the varied mini games (some of them were new to my taste buds), the varied difficulty, the hilariously funny bits as the recipes in the apothecary or the book titles. Some tasks looked like they were going to be rather difficult, but they were easy but still very well seasoned.
The super puzzles were an extra treat: Usually I don’t read the menu, well, the instructions for super puzzles, I want to find out on my own which ingredients are used or needed. But here, I admit, I had to, I got lost sometimes, but I enjoyed this a lot. The challenge exceeded my expectations, I haven’t tasted so much gaming fun with MCF Key to Ravenhearst and MCF Ravenhearst Unlocked for a long time.
In addition to 5 stars I would like to award both games with three chef hats. Two more hats to go, storyline and CE extras could be more refined. The games compliment each other, you can enjoy them on their own, the double bill is no must, but I recommend it highly.
I am not particularly keen on FROG’s. I am not a big fan of Fairy Tale stories. I usually avoid games that start with a car/coach/plane or what ever accident. I did not buy the latest Dark Parable games developed by Blue Tea, although I did like their first ones for their stories. They were really extra, but I grew tired of having to play the same FROG scene for up to three, four times.
But I LOVED Goldilocks and the Fallen Star! The FROG scenes were so much fun to play, the scenes varied in challenge, some of the fragments were quite hard to find and I enjoyed them a lot. The mini games were funny and entertaining as well, some of them were nice new variations as the labyrinth or „closing in the keyhole“. For me even those which were repeated with increasing difficulty as the one on the artifact never got boring.
The story made me smile more than once. I don’t like bending an existing story into something beyond recognition, but I’m very tolerant when it comes to such a „cross-over“ fairy tale story. The „cameo“ appearances of Jack from the Beanstalk story in the main game was brilliant! We used to do this as kids, combining characters from fairy tales, as sending Hansel and Gretel to knock on the door of the cottage of Snow White’s dwarfs.
As Standard Version the game would get 5 stars. I’m not a big fan of CE’s, usually I don’t find much to justify the price. The bonus game was very good. I liked assembling the balalaika, a nice arch to the „for the best experience play with …“ advice screen at the beginning. But, playing the FROG’s as quickly as possible doesn’t do it for me. For a CE I miss more material. More insight into the developing process of the game, probably a few voice-over slips, as someone saying „Goldiflocks“ or whatever happens. Or a compilation of „zips and their missing pullers“ from all EIPIX games.
Still, if anyone knows of a travel agency where you can book a holiday in the kingdom of Barsia, let me know. I’d love to spend a few days off there!
The opening cutscene made me doubt already. It was cruel and cheap. The story, apart from the pounding heart you hold at the very beginning, had nothing to do with the original one by Poe. This is taking POEtic license too far. My apologies if there is more of the original story later on, I won’t be buying this game in any version and I won’t be using a free coupon to find out.
I’m very tolerant with HO game stories, I’m also very tolerant with logic as long as the game is gripping and entertaining. "The Tell-Tale Heart" lacks all the „ingredients“ that make a game interesting for me: story, challenge, creepiness and fun, it exceeded my tolerance threshold.
The mini games were extremely easy and dull, so were the HOs. I used skip and hint extensively, I found this more interesting than the game.
Happy gaming to those who like the game! It’s just not for me.
Just finished and must say: What a spectacular game! The opening video wins the „Oscar“ for the best intro of the year! I had to exit and restart the game to see it again. Only then I discovered that I can replay videos, at least those already watches, from extras!

The incredible scenery, orchestral soundtrack - and, at least for me, the Return of Humour to this series. For me it was a lot of fun to try out things, as for instance hitting the lantern instead of the work gloves with the fishing rod on the cliff. And another element I enjoy: at least one reference to a former game of the dev: the famous gardener from Final Cut reappears, at least on the ID of Frank, the gardener of the museum.
The game has exceeded my expectations! MCF had lost me after the „13th Skull“, but now I’m back and hoping for new stories. Mystery Case Files deserved fresh wind, and this dev has brought it! Very well done!!!
