Definitely play the trial version first because this game is really different. You can see your character, an FBI agent, and make her move through the scenes. Other reviewers called it a 'third person point of view' game. The game play felt a little cumbersome at first, but I got used to it and really enjoyed the game. One thing worth noting regarding the trial version is that you can accomplish all of the tasks in the scene in under the given hour, but you are not allowed to progress to the next scene in the game. No big deal, but I wish I'd known that when I played the trial version because I thought I'd missed something.
You definitely get your money's worth with this game! I played it for about 2 weeks. It is VERY hard. Usually, I pride myself in not using strategy guides, but this game required super human MacGyver-type knowledge in order to make useful gadgets, from seemingly unrelated inventory items, to solve problems. And there are no hints. So I got the strategy guide from a link on the Big Fish forum and had to refer to it 4 or 5 times.
If you enjoy the trial, I would definitely recommend buying the game because the game got better as it progressed and you get more familiar with the types of solutions the game requires. I also got better at recognizing when I was clueless on what sort of gadget was required for a task or how to make one from my inventory items. In one instance, after I used the strategy guide to make a gadget that solved the problem, I still had no idea why the thing worked. Knowing when to use the strategy guide in this game is a useful strategy. :-)
Lastly, this game was fairly creepy because the murders were gruesome. However, the story, graphics, sound, cut scenes, atmosphere, were all excellent and the FBI agent was sassy and smart--really liked that. Great game!
2 FYIs: You can use your Escape button to skip the 2 introductions. Double-clicking your mouse makes the character run.
If you have not played a Nancy Drew game, be sure to play the trial version before buying this game because ND games are different from most Big Fish games. There were only a few puzzles in the entire game and no HOs. There is a lot of talking to the same suspects over and over again and you have to think about their responses and the evidence you've gathered in repetitive room searches in order to proceed with the game. If you are playing a ND for the first time, I'd advise playing as a 'Junior Detective' in order to get hints from Nancy's friends when you telephone them. And, as another reviewer noted, you have to keep your own notes in a ND game.
For people who like ND games, this one was fun! I enjoyed playing it. It is one the early ND games so it was less polished and had fewer puzzles, but it had an interesting story and group of suspects, and the scene of the crime was limited to a theatre which decreased the number of rooms to be revisited. It also had hidden passageways-- always a plus! I played the game as a 'Senior Detective' but had to search online for a strategy-guide hint twice. Otherwise, it was a fairly easy game, good length, and has a great adrenaline rush at the end...thank goodness for the 'Second Chance' option!
I would definitely recommend this game to any Nancy Drew game fan.
Very good game! It kept my interest with a rather unbelievable, but well written story about cars having souls and it had a proper ending. Yea! The game moves pretty fast, I played the advance mode and I only had to use the directional hint button twice. Some of the puzzles were interesting, not too many IHO's, and it was a nice long game with a lot of different scenes--you definitely get your money's worth. I noticed a couple of reviewers had technical glitches, so before buying the game, I made sure to complete the trial version. The game, cursors, and videos worked perfectly on my desktop computer.
The puzzles caught me off guard a couple of times. Most of them were so easy that I was over-thinking them, and then they threw in a couple of doozies that required some real commitment to figure out. Made the game less predictive and more interesting. I also appreciated the items you pick up being identified and not automatically going into the inventory. Also, getting to keep and reuse a couple of tools, at least for a little while, added a touch of common sense. (Developers: Please let me keep and reuse hammers and screw drivers!)
I thought the ambient noise was awful, like loud footsteps all the time when you weren't walking and sudden threatening sounds when nothing was going on. But you can turn it down or off, so it's not really an issue. Most of the male voice actors were soooo dramatic which made me laugh--no Oscars for those guys! I thought the graphics and animation were very well done.
Overall, I really enjoyed playing this game and the story kept me interested to the end.
Really, really liked this game! I'd give it a 4.7 rating. The writers had a full story and a proper, final ending. (Thank you, Developers!) The beginning set up the story and you had to use a bit more thought to solve puzzles than most games which was surprising and added to the fun. I liked the underlying logic to the story and the puzzles. I wish they would have ID'd the active scenes so you don't have to double-check there is not another scene next to the one you've completed. The middle of the game dragged a bit with more HOs, but the ending was great and the Bonus Game was wonderful! What a treat! It was like having a gift of another game at the end and the Bonus Game was also a great quality game. I worried that the Bonus Game wouldn't open because I didn't find all the "Hidden Symbols" but it turns out everyone gets to play the Bonus Game at the end. There are a couple of small glitches in the game when the game Map showed there was a Hidden Symbol to be found in a couple of scenes but there wasn't one or I had already picked it up. Other than that, this game was really fun to play and required a bit more thought. Great drawing and animation, too. Excellent!
This is the third game in the series and very similar to the first two. I enjoyed the game, although it is becoming a little annoying having to rescue 'my' sister's family all the time. I liked that it's a long game, the number of HO scenes seemed just right, scenes were identified when the mouse rolled over them and close when completed, and there were a lot of different types of puzzles. However, the instructions for the less intuitive puzzles were very unclear and I'm pretty sure one puzzle completed successfully even though I had not actually solved it...after so many tries it felt sorry for me? There was also a lot of collecting stuff before you know you need it and backtracking between the scenes, but the interactive map made it easy. I got a little bored toward the end, but overall this was a quality game with a decent story with an true ending #thank you!#, nice graphics, sound, and animation, plus some different types of puzzles.
If you liked the first two games in this series, you'll probably like this one, although I thought The Legacy was much better. For people who have not played the first two games, you don't need the back story to play and enjoy this game.
I recommend this game!

Excellent game!! Lots of different kinds of mini-games!
This is another high quality game from the developer Artifex Mundi. The story is interesting and well written, I cared about the characters and their dilemma, the game play made sense, the mini-games are easy, fun, and varied, and the drawings, voices, animation, and videos were great. Plus, there were not too many HO's and the game actually let's you keep a useful item throughout the game--what a concept, I wish more games would do that. Also liked that scenes closed when completed and the developers actually wrapped up the story at the end--thank you for that! Overall, an excellent, fun game of the highest quality. Loved playing it.
Rating: 4.8 This was a great game, I definitely recommend it. I bought it because this game's developer (Mad Head Games) also made 'Nevertales: The Beauty Within' which is the best game I've ever played. The developers did an excellent job with this game too. It was a long, fun, well-written game with an engaging story where I cared about the characters and how their predicaments were to be resolved. It wasn't as good as 'Nevertales' due to a couple of annoyances and it lacked the huge variety of HO types, mini-games and innovative locations compared to 'Nevertales,' but it was still a great game!
Really liked: -- Story and characters -- Interesting little movies that provided the back story for the game, but they required a lot of computer memory -- Long length -- Customizable Difficulty level -- Interactive map showing uncompleted objectives -- Decent variety of HO types -- Most of the mini games were innovative, very easy and fun -- Excellent graphics and music
Didn't like: -- The little movies in the game required a LOT of memory and wouldn't play on my laptop. Luckily, the game was good enough that I didn't mind starting the game over on my desktop at home where the movies ran fine. -- All of the games up until the last few minutes were extremely easy. Which is fine, the game moves very quickly because of that. However, right at the end, 2 or 3 games were ridiculously hard. It was jarring and irritating. I rarely Skip, but I skipped these in annoyance. -- The end was okay, but needed a 30-second scene to nicely wrap things up. I don't understand why developers do that. After writing an excellent story and getting the gamers wrapped up in it, the developers skimp on the ending and the gamer is left unsatisfied after enjoying hours of play. There must be a reason because so many games have the same problem.
Overall, this is a great game and I look forward to playing more games from this quality developer.
This game was so close to perfect that I feel a bit bedazzled having just finished it. The makers of this game spared no expense or time in the creation of this quality, artistic and smart game. If there is an equivalent of an Oscar for games, they should win it.
I hesitate to even offer any details of the game because you should just buy it and not waste your time reading how great I thought it was. But just in case you are not convinced, here are the things I liked the most:
-- Playing the game was like being immersed in a wonderful new fairy tale. I just couldn't get enough of it. -- You get to totally customize your game options. For example: Do you want Sparkles? What areas do you want sparkled? Hints? None, or slow, or fast to recharge? Skip option? etc. Loved that! Should be standard in every game. -- The game got better and better as you progress -- The world within the game was creative and beautiful -- Oh, the places you'll go! Every new scene was a surprise. I won't tell you the places you will visit in this game because that will spoil some of the fun, but wow! Such fun! -- It had witty and corny moments -- The music actually enhanced the game; scary when appropriate, heart-rending as they revealed the story. -- Largest range puzzles types ever, even the types of HOs were hugely varied.
One note about the puzzles: The vast majority of the mini games and puzzles were very easy. A couple puzzles took more time in order to figure out the puzzle's goal, but I didn't mind because they were so unique and it added some challenge.
I've been playing games on Big Fish for several years now, and 'Nevertales: The Beauty Within' was simply the best game I have ever played. The problem is now I'm spoiled by the best. I can only hope that other game developers will aspire to this quality in the devolvement of their future games. Buy it and become spoiled, too!
When I completed the SE version, it ended with a cliff-hanger scene. I thought 'okay, there is going to be a sequel.' Not the best, but the game was great and I was ready to give it 5 stars and look forward to the sequel. However, I was so disappointed in the ending that I went back and read the reviews about the SE and CE versions. It turns out you have to buy the CE to resolve the cliff-hanger and get the end of the story. Since I will not be putting out more money for the CE version, I guess I will never know for sure who-did-it and why. Very disappointing and I do not recommend buying this game.
This was a hard game to rate. It was really fun to play and had a unique combination of an engaging story, creepiness, and funny dialogue that made me laugh-out-loud. I wanted to give it 5 stars for the humor alone, but the game was short and the Hint Button did not work properly 2 out of the 4 times I used it.
The Hint Button malfunction sent me to scenes that had already been completed and did not contain the final puzzle piece I needed to move on with the game. Of course the first time it happened, I kept clicking and searching over and over again for the missing puzzle piece until I finally gave up and looked at the Walkthrough which showed the missing puzzle piece in a completely different scene. Very, very annoying. The second time the Hint Button was wrong, I double checked the scene it indicated, but then went to the Walkthrough to find the correct scene for the puzzle piece.
Otherwise, I loved the game. In the beginning, the running dialogue at the top of the screen bugged me (e.g. "Picked up a crowbar"), but then I couldn't get enough of the sarcastic comments when I did something random or idiotic.
I also liked: -- So many puzzles that I didn't notice there were no HOs. -- Loved having some riddle puzzles. -- Most of the puzzles did not have instructions, you have to figure out what is the goal of the puzzle yourself. Had to get used to that, but the puzzles were pretty easy and the lack of instructions made them more challenging. The Hint Button functioned properly when I needed help solving one of the puzzles. There was also a Skip Button.
Fun game and a good story! I liked the ending and it left me wanting a sequel. If they fixed the Hint Button and made this game longer, it would be a true 5 star game.
