Wouldn't normally rate such an easy game more than 3 stars, but it was so polished well put together that it kept my interest throughout - not the least bit boring. Uncomplicated storyline. HOS were large, crisp and clear although some objects were very well hidden. Puzzles were easy but fun. Graphics were great. Narrator and sheriff voice overs were very pleasant; too bad all characters didn't have voices. Quite a few trophies to collect - not usual in a SE. Nice relaxing music - not too intrusive.
Story is told through still comic-like photos, which you can read at your own pace. Two time modes per HOS: 20 minutes relaxed or 10 minutes adventure. Slightly panoramic HOS in that the screen will move about an inch each way. Items are very well blended and a very few objects may be small (though many other games have much smaller objects), but the game is generous with hints.
Maximum hints at a time are 6: earn additional hints in your choice of 3 mini-games: dress a doll; fashion a piece of clay pottery or paint a picture. You have to find and assemble 6 crown pieces to complete the game. Wide variety of skippable puzzles (provided you have at least one hint to lose); more challenging as the game progresses. Skipping puzzles will use any hints you have, but you can earn more playing the mini-games.
An interesting story about people afflicted with a disease causing them to be in a state of stupor. Voiceovers are okay, as are the actors. It’s usually easy to figure out what has to be done next, but if you become stumped, the interactive map, showing where current activities are available, is most helpful.
Physical environments are somewhat drab. HOS are not crowded; in fact, there was a most efficient use of HOS scenes. There would be a small amount of objects to find and interact with, followed by another short list. They were a pleasure to do. Also had to put objects back where they belong. Some were obvious; other were not – moderately challenging. Nice game – though not as compelling as some others. About 3 1/2 stars rounded down for the overly drab locations.
Mostly an adventure game. Wasn’t as exciting as I thought it would be, but still a very good game. Options include regular or expert mode and choosing snow – don’t know what snow is supposed to do, but there is no difference with my screen whether or not I’ve opted for snow. You have a device for assembling interesting-looking inventions to use after collecting its components. Collect 33 rose petals – rose glows whenever there are petals in the location; rose also unfreezes water. You’ll also need them for the end of the game.
Storyline flowed smoothly and didn’t rely on HOS and puzzles to fill gaps. Instructions for the interesting mix of puzzles weren’t always that informative – were along the lines of “put things in order.” Some puzzles made you feel smart if you solved them – you might know what is needed to solve them, but then you actually had to figure out how to do it. Plenty of locations to explore and things to do to keep your interest. Ending was different than expected. Took about 5 ½ hours casual.
Relaxing music; gorgeous scenes; appealing and believable story (if you believe in ghosts); wide variety of clever puzzles. Good blend of HOS and puzzles/mini-games. It’s a delight to see HOS with such detailed and picturescque graphics instead of the drab, overly crowded and dilapidated-looking HOS found in so many games today.
As with the other Dana Knightstone stories, the developers put a lot of thought into the plot and did a fantastic job of putting the gameplay together to move the story forward smoothly and effortlessly. And they showed a little humor in everyday life - the animals and their antics sure added a little smile to my face. A very well developed and polished game. A nice addition to my Dana collection.
What I liked: Great looking graphics. Ability to magnify scenes. Sound level of voice overs could be selected. Task list. Can play mini-games and HOS after completing the game. Change between casual, advanced and hard modes during play.
What Could be Better: Story is basically good but could have been more cohesive - why would a resort not let you stay after an avalanche and instead send you on your way into the treacherous mountains. Wouldn't they would be snowed in? Gameplay could have flowed a little better - not always sure what direction to take.
Nice thinking, but relaxing game. You get a lot of interesting facts about the history of different cultures. Using the mouse to change from one type of cursor to the other wasn't always taking right away - maybe I'm too fast.
This is one of the best adventure-HOGS I’ve played in the past 2 years. 3 levels of difficulty with the ability to change during the game. There is a lot to do and places to visit as you investigate the circumstances of your sister’s death (or is it merely a disappearance – there doesn’t seem to be enough evidence either way).
Gorgeous locations with amazing detail. Good variety of HOS (no magnifying glass needed), interesting mini-games and puzzles, which become more challenging as the game progresses. Instructions weren’t always clear, but you’re able to work them out with a little logic. Gameplay is straightforward. If you get stuck on what to do next, it has one of the most helpful hint systems I’ve seen. Ending left open one or two minor questions, but was otherwise satisfying. Very polished and entertaining.
BASICS: Diary includes a more complete synopsis of the story than you get from just gameplay. Occasionally, it has clues for some puzzles or where you need to go next. Includes a map, which expands as more locations are found. Backtracking is kept to a minimum. Inventory items are sometimes combined in a tray to make a useful tool (e.g., a pan and broomstick make an oar). Collect 28 ravens (for additional hints) and 63 hidden clovers. 50 Clovers will unlock unlimited HOS. There are frequently clovers in close-ups and also 2 clovers within a HOS – collect them immediately because you will not be able to access them once the scene is closed.
STORYLINE: Find out the circumstances under which Nathaniel Hawthorne died and where he is buried. You’ll also be involved in building the House of the 7 Gables, a witch trial, and all the fraud involved in land around that period of time and lots of ghosts, each with their own story. Mysterious to the end.
GAMEPLAY: Spooky atmosphere. HOS are nicely detailed; click the name of an inventory item to see its silhouette. Click the raven to pinpoint where an item is located in the HOS or for direction of what to do outside of the HOS. Talk with several of the ghosts – there are 3 interesting questions you can ask each ghost. Unfortunately, the questions are usually unrelated and there is no way to pursue a response from the ghost which is of interest. As a result, it seemed the story was sometimes incongruent and I was occasionally confused toward the end (1 point reduction). I like everything clarified and did not get that feeling. Other than that, top-rated production.
OTHER STUFF: Plenty of scenes; very nice graphics and animation create a chilling and creepy atmosphere. Easy maneuverability - limited number of scenes at a time so you can easily keep track of what is at the various locations. Clicking on some items can cause a demonic reaction, further setting the spooky atmosphere which surrounds the time period. According to Wikipedia, much of the facts about Hawthorne in the storyline were correct, but don’t know if the story about his role at/in the witch trial location was fact or conjecture.
I was so disappointed, considering I really wanted to like this game. Sleepy Hollow was one of my favorite stories and Disney filmS as a kid. Game started out great. But what spoils it are the HOS and they greatly outweigh any positives. They are so crowded and indistinct - a lot of black, brown and grey stuff shoved together. Maybe the developers thought that was what would make it challenging. What's wrong with a little color? I have a 27" screen and still couldn't make out the detail. If the hints recharged, I would buy it, but not when they are so limited.
