The Mystery Tales are a series dealing with supernatural occurrances, behind which mostly an evil mind is to be found. The player acts as a detective, specialized in these cases and equipped with a tool: the glasses, used to see into the spectral world, and see the past events, leading to the present situation. And here we are in Twola, a formerly dying small city, resurrected around a company (Twola TV Company) Our friend Nathalie has called us for support in a case of mysterious deaths with only one criterion in commen: people were sitting in front of their TV sets, when they died. So off we go. Arriving at Nathalie’s place, she asks us in to give more details to the mysterious case, but before we can follow her in, we witness an accident? The TV emits a radiation that envelops Nathalie. The door shuts. After making our way in, we start investigating: our friend has collapsed, the TV is broken. As we look at the scene through our glasses, a creepy sequence arises: rays come out of the television like an octopus, embracing Nathalie and drawing out her life force. We need to know more and contact the police. Together with Kevin Stevens, who contributes facts to the other cases, we visit the scenes of the events. The unexplained deaths began when Twola TV gave away televisions on the occasion of its fifth anniversary. Prof Landon was the first. He was critical of the company, accusing them of mind control using the devices. Of course there is more behind this company, as it seems at first glance. The investigation of the ‘killer televisions sets’ or better, the deaths in connection with the devices proceeds with quite creative and varied HOS and many challenging puzzles. As usual you may choose your difficulty. On the whole it is a fast paced game, though in some sections of the game the plot proceeds in small steps, when you need to find the screw, then one part, then the other part of your much needed pliers. Many collectables, good visuals and suiting music round up the package. For me a thrilling addition to the series.
The Dark Parables are a quite magical series, in which mostly fairy tales are told in a beautifully style with hidden objects to find in a special way, the FROGs and fairly good, often innovative puzzles. The first one, Briar Rose, took me in at once. Many followed and in between another developer left his ‘handwriting’ . Although the contents remained the same, certain patterns were kept, on the whole there was a different impression. With the Return of the Salt Princess, the series is back at its origins. Unfortunately the mechanics are back to these roots as well: no customizing of the game, miss click penalty, only easy, normal or hard mode to choose. Artwork is simply stunning, all hand drawn with love to detail. Though FROGs are not for everyone, as the objects are not easy to find, here everything is pin sharply drawn and more a feast to look for your items. But the visuals and a very suiting music are only one part of the good impression. Plot unfolds quite fast: you are in the place, where action has to be taken. The story takes place in the old Grak Kingdom. It lies in ruins, which have started to turn into salt lately. Salt used to be the kingdom’s trade, but its ruin as well? A long time ago the princess of the kingdom disappeared, now events, as the growing salt crust on the ruins, suggest, she may have reappeard. It is our task, as fairy tale detective, to track her down. And we ‘stumble’ pretty quickly over one of her guards, a girl, half buried below rubble. She and her sister are helpful and soon we catch sight of the princess herself. But she has a problem: Her unique ability to control the white dragonflies, who are able to turn everything they touch into salt, is vanishing. Not the only obstacle, as there is the giant man. A fire-breathing dragon stands by his side as he captures the princess. To me a magical adventure into a fantastic world…
After a hidden doorway in a study, forgotten pages in a book we are now on the track of a novelist and his taleworld. Your father Godfrey Lane disappeared years ago without a trace. But the wonderful memories of him, the time spent together in your childhood days, are still vivid. He may still be alive, as a cryptic message, you received recently, suggests. You shall come to the ‘Den of Fun’, a playground, where a special package would be waiting for you. You find it and realize, there is a card with dad’s handwriting and a mysterious box, to be opened with a silver quill. When you install the quill, a portal opens and on entering you indeed meet your dad. You are in taleworld. Godfrey explains, this world was created from all his stories. But when he found a way inside, he was at the same time blocked from the heart of taleworld, the Spark. The one, who stands between the Spark and him, is the sorceress Helen, who claims to keep the Spark for the Creator. But you would be able to go. With Fear Bringer, the mighty sword, taken out of a stone, you can enter the city. Only there and finally in the chamber, where the Spark is kept, you face your next problem: Warlock Cyrus. He has imprisoned your father, drained his essence and formed the Spark out of it. Now, that he has taken it from us, he can regain power over taleworld. We are taken as well and wake in father’s study, where he greets us …. A fantastic story with legendary and some sci-fi elements, good and evil forces and all formed out of one source: the imagination, that lets us form worlds out of stories. HOS and puzzles fit well into gameplay. Plot unfolds fast and reminds me of predecessing Nevertales, where we already met a taleworld, though a different one. Or are we just in another chamber?
Haunted Hotel – the uncanny and horror lite is guaranteed in this series. We may enter a building, where the remnants of past events and fates form the basis for our experience. This time it is Schneider’s hotel and spa in the Alps. A train accident, a lonely man walking on the snow, looking down from a hill on a hotel. Mumbles about his only chance…. Mark and Jane Stuart had been looking forward to their vacation in the Alps. But when they enjoy their journey on the train, the accident happens. We play as Mark Stuart and wake up in a hotel room. So, we must have survived, but where is Jane? Strange, a photo of the two of us is on a chest but the ad of the hotel says Schneiders, Hotel & Spa, not the one, we wanted to go. An album shows pictures of the Schneiders and little Tony describes them as a happy family. Whatever has happened, first of all, we have to find Jane. We see her several times in a wheelchair, asking for help but she keeps disappearing immediately. The room and corridor look quite normal, though abandoned. With the spa area a surreal world opens. Behind a hall a beach opens. We can reach it via a bridge, enter a bungalow, in which we hope to find Jane. But behind the door is a padded cell. It is closed, as soon as we are in it. Again, Jane is calling for help and again we find clues of the Schneider family story. A diary with passages of Tony, his accident which led him into a coma. Father Schneider is desperate to save his son. Next: we wake up (again) and find ourselves in an absurd experiment: Schneider needs other people’s lifeforce for his his children and tries a transfer on a subconscious level. But though we prove as a real survivor, the nightmare will not end soon. Something goes really wrong….. The game offers many puzzles and HOS, varied as usual. Both are entertaining though not new. But once in a while the known is good enough, especially in cases where the story compensates. It is a more surreal adventure, not a lost dream but a nightmare, very well made with great visuals. As usual we have many collectables and morphs.
The fourth installment of the Victorian mystery series has invited even more literary characters to the game: in our case vampires seem to be the culprits, one of them a well known count! But first comes first: We play as Hawkes, as usual, member of the Vermillion Watch. A new case attracts our attention: A series of brutal murders in Whitechapel, all victims are female and drained of blood. This time Maria will be part of the investigation team and accompanies us to the crime scene of the latest victim. Her part will be quite special, as she will try to revive the victim for a short time with the help of a machine, in order to question her. It is not much, the victim can contribute, but her words point to the tavern opposite and the horse statues that surround the square. Further details will help us: a mask, we found behind a statue and a purplish substance on the victim. We ask for Dr. Jekyll (name is NO coincidence) to examine this. In the tavern, the barkeeper points out his special guests (Mr Varney, Miss Carmilla and Dr Dracul), after we have shown him our permit. We may have a look around, though the guests are not easily to approach. Each of the three has a peculiarity but all of them carry a capsule with a purplish substance in it. First clues? Yes, but we need to know more about these characters and take steps to enter and search their rooms. They turn out to be not normal people but are they vampires? After following them through the maze of the underground tunnels of London, they confront us and take Dr. Jekyll, whom they want to join their circle as his second self, Mr Hyde. And then a person appears, who we thought defeated, the red queen. She outs herself as the head of this conspiracy. Back in the headquarters of the Vermillion Watch we need to develop a plan. Vampires? The answer Rufus suggests, is no, something or somebody real should be behind the events. Though a bit strange to meet the different protagonists of various famous gothic novels in this game, it has a certain fascination. Carmilla, Varney and Dracula, forming a triumvirate , the red queen, whom we thought, was defeated, returns – seems, we have quite illustrious opponents, let’s see, how we fight them. HO scenes are superb in this game, variable and not plain lists. They are nicely placed in the game flow, as well as the puzzles. Most are challenging but not too difficult and ‘doable’ .
A special adventure in the investigation of unexplained phenomena lies before us. So the introduction shows a pyramid, rising from the ground in a mere moment in the jungle of Amazon. Pyramids as such are enigmatic, even more so, when appearing out of nothing. We play as an archeologist, Professor Cassie Sylva. In a rather quiet phase with no prospect of new projects, a call comes in. It is a Mr Gate (apparently a wealthy investor in all sorts of promising projects). He wants us to investigate a pyramid. But here comes, what makes it special: the pyramid has simply emerged in the jungle, ancient and never been detected before. According to rumors there is already another team at the site, led by a Miss Elsa and we should start immediately. Elsa could well be our estranged sister, who is an archeologist too. Anyway, off to the adventure into something incredible. Our plane brings us with an almost crash into, what seems, the middle of the jungle. In one of the boxes we already found information on the pyramid: there is sort of history. It appeared and reappeared in several places. Finally at the site, we meet our sister in a not too friendly family reunion which is competition for the rights of the find at the same time. Then Elsa and her crew are sucked into the inner portion of the pyramid. Now it seems up to us, Cassie, to find out, what is behind this pyramid, its sudden appearance and where Elsa and her team went. A thrilling story told in good, almost breathless, pace with entertaining HOS and challenging puzzles. What lies Beneath is the first game of the new sci-fi series Wanderlust. Much of what we may expect lies in the word: A desire for new, unexplored, but also unexplained and undiscovered things. A joyful and curious wandering into adventure.
This fourth demon hunt will lead you to ancient Egypt. Your opponent will be Seth, the Egyptian god, who threatens the world. It is you, who has been chosen for the task, as you are the Bearer of Light and thereby the only one, able to fight the dark Seth. The mighty gauntlet of Horus is your weapon. But many obstacles lay on your way. First, you have to find the missing pieces for your gauntlet, then, your companion is kidnapped by one of Seth’s demons and you need to go back in time and confront your opponent in Ancient Egypt at his place and time.
Dark fantasy storywise and entertaining with a mild challenge and beautiful visuals.
The Royal Detective started out with Princess as a protagonist in the first game of the series, then abandoned her after the second, where she found a new and happy life. Now we meet her again, as she wrote us a letter. She needs our help in Stone Peaks, where she came to see her secret lover Prince. Nobody knows about him and she fears for him and herself. Together with the letter we receive out assisstant, Sheriff, Princess’ dog. Somebody with no good intentions, is after the statues, Princess’ old friends and allies. After various games without her, we are re-introduced to Princess story, and how she became involved with them. It is quite clear, that the statues are harmed in order to get closer to Princess and lay hands on her and her magical abilities. In the introduction we saw already a man, who intends to make use of these to gain the power, he wishes for. We play as the Royal Detective and in the course of the game, rescue one statue after the other and gather clues about who the villain could be. Of course magic plays a role and Princess and Prince should be united in the end. For me a bit weird storyline but the game is extremely well made. HOS as well as puzzles are variable, challenging and entertaining. Sheriff is a helper, but a discrete one. All in all, a strange story packed in great features, as the puzzles alone are worth playing the game.
Back in the enchanted kingdom we, the honored healer, are called, as there is an epidemic spreading. Dr. Klein needs our help and as soon as we meet him, the door opens and an apparently ill man enters the room. He is a warrior from Rivershire, where the disease started. After diagnosing him, we recognize the demonic character of the illness. We can heal him, and he reports, what happened in Rivershire. Source of the infection is an ominous fog, it seizes the mind and alters the body of those, befallen. The healer of this village had been infected too and the villagers put him into a cage to prevent him from harming himself. It looks like the disease turns people into monsters. They change in appearance and behavior. All not infected, fled across the river but there they may be not safe for long. Your immunity against magical illness will protect you, as your task is now to help the healer, the villagers and to defeat the source of the infection. Part of the game is of course our medical kit for composition of healing potions, as well as the diagnostic tool. Both features are a substatial part of the series and in this third game we start with using it from the very beginning. The ride to Rivershire will not be boring, as we jump into sort ‘find your way against all obstacles’ puzzle – with easy/hard option, as usual. HOS and puzzles are all variable and entertaining. A choice of difficulty let the player choose the challenge. Still I have the feeling of missing some of the mystery of the former games. The search for the cause of the disease, the originator of the pathogen, is less exciting after we are informed at the very beginning of what triggers the infection. It is a demonic fog. That leaves, finding the source and defeating it. On the other hand, this should be an exiting adventure, as demons were vanquished decades ago. So I’m off on my way through this fantastic world…..
In ancient days, a ruler, who came to power by black magic, escaped his dethronement and death by the hands of his revolting subjects, by suicide. He stabbed himself with a black dagger.....But did he die? Present day, a police station. Duncan, a police detective has called us in. He is at the scene and reports, the station has been attacked by a man with supernatural strength and speed. One officer was killed, the station is devastated. We play as investigator, specialized in cases, where the supernatural plays a role. It is important to find out, what exactly happened and who the attacker was. The station is furnished with cameras, so we are able to watch the video footage on the attack. After breaking into the station and stabbing one of the officers, the strange man is not alone, a dark shadow appears and they communicate, then vanish. The man is unknown, but Duncan recognizes the dagger. It has played a role in another crime 15 years ago and was later stolen from the evidence. This weapon was originally part of a collection of medieval artifacts. A secret surrounds this dagger, with it the life of the man who is stabbed to death seems to be sucked in. We need to know more. The collector, who originally owned the dagger, lives nearby and should know more about it. So we are off to Garold’s Mansion. Here it becomes even clearer, behind this is a supernatural force, which tries to block us from entering the mansion. Inside a fight is going on, the mysterious villain from the station is here and feriously attacking a man. The collector? We manage to overcome the attacker but the man, John, could only utter some words before he is stabbed from behind by the resurrected assailant. The dagger again sucks in the dead man’s life force. But he gave us his diary - the magician was fought in his time and the descendants of those, who did it then, are in great danger now. …… The Black Dagger is a fast paced thrilling game on a dark magician, who escaped death centuries ago by killing himself with the dagger. With the weapon as a means in the hands of one of his servants, he regains his life, every killed man returns his life force. Puzzles and HOS are varied and entertaining, not too challenging but this is not a contra. The plot unfolds quickly and doesn’t let go . So an overall successful performance in the series.
