My all time favorite series Mystery Case Files is back. After two years in the hands of Elephant Games, which in my opinion didn't do the best to the series Eipix is the developer this time. They are my favorite developers, but still I was very afraid if they can develop a great MCF game, but they CAN! Finally a real Mystery Case Files game!
The Main game is 6 chapters long and I needed around 4,5 hours to complete the game. The story starts, like always, because of new developments in Blackpool the Master Detective is called to investigate the case. For the fourth time he returns to Ravenhearst, just to find himself in new horrors. This time the Ravenhearst Manor has been rebuilt by new owners, but are really new owners the ones behind dissappearing ships and people? No, not really. While your investigation you'll meet our beloved twins Gwendolyn and Charlotte in a "new" way and our arch enemy Alister makes fun of the MD through his Enigma Box filled with riddles and mini-games. I really loved the story involving new and old characters, starting mysterius and slowly unraveling. In the end there will be many surprises and really everyone who expected to see old characters there will be happy. Oh and be careful if you open the cabinets ;) And is this really the end of the Ravenhearst Story or...
The graphics and the atmosphere are very close to the original. Sadly the MCF main theme is just inclouded in the soundtrack, not in the game. That would make it even better, but Eipix really looked how BFG-Studios created the Ravenhearst environment. Many well known places and some new ones are waiting to be discovered, filled with scaryness and evil. The creepy atmosphere is absolutly there! The sounds are good, and fit with the visual, I'm just missing the "missplace" item sound, which was a typical MCF sound when an inventory item was used in the wrong place, always appearing together with a snarky comment. So I hope to hear that sound again next year.
There are plenty mini-games in Alisters Enigma, in HO's or during the gameplay. Some of them are easy others are very tricky and require the Master Detective skills. There are also some complex combination puzzles, like there used to be in MCF games. Sadly there's to much help for them. I prefered the case report, where things were written down, so we had to look them up ourselfes. Also there are super puzzles which are brilliant and I really loved them! Great work here.
The CE comes with many extras, including art, video, soundtrack, wallpapers, HO's, puzzles, Souvenirs and more. Afterall the game is not as perfect as a Big Fish Studio MCF, butI'm critizising on a very high level here, and after EG's not soo good job in my opinion the Eipix team has outdone themselfes. It's there best game up to date and worthy MCF sequel and I sure hope that MCF remains in the hands of Eipix. Also Thank you Carlos for giving us clues during September and October! Really appreciated!
Midnight Mysteries by MumboJumbo is one of the most anticipated HOPA franchises here at BFG. With Hot Lava Games (Co workers of MJ) taking over the series there weren't much big changes, but now GameForest, the makers of Gummy Drop developed this 6th game in the franchise, what surprised me since the BETA was a Hot Lava Game, but anyway the developer change brought some fresh elements into the game.
The storyline starts like in every Midnight Mysteries game, what is great. The Raven looks at the terrible events which are happening. This time Charles Dickens and Washington Irving are in danger, because someone sent them threats and their fictional characters come to life. As the suspicius person drops a package at your home you start to discover the mystery of the Ghostwriters. Travel to Sleepy Hollow and try to save them. Overall the story is great done and events are well explained.
The graphics are good, sometimes a little blurred but they are atmospheric. Especially in Sleepy Hollow they sometimes gave me chills. The soundtrack is nice and fits together with the graphic. Together music and scenes create a great gaming atmosphere.
The game features some all new puzzles and has many new elements in the MM series. New and innovative HO's and a different interface bring new wind into the series. Mostly the puzzles are quite easy, but some puzzles are created harder, because you'll earn achievements if you solve them without skipping. There are gold, silver and bronze achievements and to get them all is not easy. The gameplay is ok, but sometimes a little slow, because my curser got stuck several times for a few seconds. There are 56 collectible clovers and around 45 collectible Raven coins. The Collectibles unlock extra content, if you find them all.
Afterall this is the best game in the Midnight Mysteries series yet in my opinion and after the let down of the fifth game a nice surprise. Well done GameForest team!
The best HOPA Franchise of the world is back, now with it's eleventh installment and this time we're going back to Dire Grove. I really love the Mystery Case Files franchise and so I adore this game more than every other.
You, the Master Detective are called to Dire Grove again. After five years you are returning there, because of unnatural cold temperatures and wild animals attacking the residents. Everyone except for the hunters has left Dire Grove. As you go on you learn that the mistwalkers, who are inhabiting the woods have a conflict with the hunters. What caused that conflict? As you go on you learn how deep the story ties and you'll meet someone you know again. Also you can choose the gender of the Master Detective in this game, which is a ne wand unique feature. Everything makes sense and ties into the story in a great way. The graphics are as good as in the original Dire Grove game. Elephant Games as developer did a well job here. It feels cold and creepy and the animations are a lot better than in Fate's Carnival. The music is wonderful. The MCF main theme is there in a new version, very snow themed and the other tracks play, when they're needed exactly. They create an immersive atmosphere and make this game even more exiting. Only one thing I would like to see next year is more MCF feeling. The missplace item sound of the previus MCF titles is already back. Please bring back the HO's sounds and more next year. But I so love that sound, when I’m stck with a snarky comment (sounds strange I know). It always motivates me to try and continue. The game is really challenging. There are around ten Hidden Object Scenes in the main game, which combine different HO types. Also they aren't too easy, but not too hard. Then there are again six super puzzles and another one in the bonus game. Even every experinced HOPA player will need some time to figure those tricky puzzles out. Absolutly amazing and skilled work. But there are also some "normal" puzzles for not so experinced players. The Collector's Edition comes with many extras, which make this game even more worth buying instantly. There's a long bonus chapter, an alternative ending, 84 Collectable puzzle pieces and a mini Dire Grove town. And more and more and more. Afterall MCF marks the spot again as best hopa series of the world. I can't wait for the 10th anniversairy next year. This game is absolutly recommended to buy and my personal game of the year!
Without warning, a group of mysterious figures arrives and reduces your village to flames and rubble. What do they want... and who is controlling them?
If you've played the other Mad Head Games you know what you can expect from them. The best HOPA Adventures after one popular series. Dark Realm was teased on fb so much and it's better than anything I had expected, this game is like a movie!
The storyline is amazing. I will use this word very often in this review. Banshees atacking your town and capture your father. Your only choice is to run away. You're running through the forest to your grandfather, where you are attacked. Now you travel through woods, caves, the Ivory Tower, the catacombs, even a lake, always hunted by dragons and banshees. When your friend gets captured you can escape. Together with your other friends you'll discover the roots of your family and your connection to the attacks. And one person really close related to you will die. Absolutly amazing storyline.
The gameplay is quickly going forward and there are over 40 scenes in the main game and 12 more in the Bonus Game to explore. Every corner of this game is polished. There are many cutscenes, but they aren't annoying, they make the game like a movie and you're the star that has to live through this adventure. I've never seen a game done like that before!
The difficulty is great. There are 20 HO's in the CE. And nearly every HO is different. From list ho, over silouette, star constellations, matching up, even mirror reflection HO. This game has every type and all new types on top. The mini games are the same. They're really challenging mostly and most of them are all new and fit perfectly into this game. Featured is a card game that I personally love so much. I could play it for hours. You can find it in the extras menu too. Play it there to unlock a card gallery.
The CE took me over 6 hours to finish and normally I never need that much time. There are 57 collectible fire symbols, 20 MO's in HO's, a extra jigsaw game, an extra HOP. The BEST HOPA Soundtrack I've ever heard and so many more extras in thw CE version. The Soundtrack is so very amazing. Even for that I would have purchased the game.
Afterall I would rate this gem and masterpiece as "Game of the Year" favorite and 6/5 stars game. Very, very well done!
I've been very dissapointed with so many of ERS latest games, but with this new release, they're finally back.
A good storyline, you're the new sheriff of a haunted town, where an angry spirit kills innocent people, but are they really that innocent. Discover the truth, behind an archological dig and a missing Sheriff, who's infact always present, without beeing noticed. Love it!
As always the graphics and sounds are great, and in this game the characters finally have moving lips, while talking. It's so much better than in the other ERS games. Hopefully they'll do this in every of their new releases now, like they used to a year ago. The atmosphere of the game is creepy and spooky, just like I like it and this time there are just a few animals in the game, which aren't too cute.
The gameplay is the best I've seen in quite a while. Many items in inventory items, many things to remember, becktracking sometimes. All of this makes the gameplay more challenging and fun. Also fun are the HO's. There are various types of HO's in the game. Same with the puzzles, one thing I love about them is that you can play them Casual or in Hard mode. Really good.
The CE comes with collectable runes, and many extras you won't find in the Standart Version. Absolutly CE worthy. I'm now finished with the main game, it took me about 4 hours to complete. The Bonus Chapter seems to be quite long too. I've played 30 minutes now and I think, there's about an hour left to play. Great!
ERS I really hope you're continuing your way back to the top game developers! From me 4,7/5 stars for this game!
Mad Head Games is well known for it’s wonderful and innovative games. Nevertales: The Beauty within was a worthy sucessor. This sequel is as good as the first installment, but it lacks a bit of challenge.
Let’s start with the storyline. It takes place around 12 years after the first game. Your daughter Alice hast he power to open portals using mirrors. Now she went missing and you have to find her. To do so you need four catalysts. Also you learn more about the Taleworld. There were once two powerful travelers called Mallek and Benefor. Mallek used his powers to control the other travelers minds and was imprisoned in the volcano. Now he has escaped. Together with your friends Maria, Gears and your husband pierre you embark on a journey through Taleworld, from the deep oceans over the oriental desert and the Cinderella kingdom until you can finally confront the evil. But can you save your daughter in time? I really love that story and I love to see all those different places.
Here we are at the next point, the graphics. They’re Mad Head Games best graphics yet. The wonderful blue ocean world, beautiful oriental graphics full of bright colors and the dark kingdom of Cinderella. Bright, dark and colorful all mixed up. A nice variety and very well done. Those graphics are absolutly awesome. Also the music and the sounds. I just love it. It’s mystic and atmospheric. I really loved it. Also I love the Hidden Object Scenes sound, when they’re opening up.
Now for the challenge. The only weak point in this game, because there are too less items in the inventory and there are too less things to remember. But with the custom playing mode you’ve got the chance to make it more difficult. But all of this doesn’t really matter, because oft he HO’s and the mini-games made this game unique and fantastic again. They’re not too challenging, but they are new and innovative. Different new types of Hidden Object Scenes, exiting mini games, my favourite ist the harpoon mini game.
The CE comes with much bonus content, inclouding 4 bonus games, one big bonus chapter and three little extra gameplay chapters. Also there’s a treasure hunt, a bonus puzzle, all HO’s can be replayed, you can download soundtracks, wallpapers and concept art… Absolutly CE worthy!
This goes to all developers: Look at Mad Head Games, how they improve the whole HOPA genre. Their sucess is that they experiment with new things and not only do the same old stuf fand put it with a different interface in their games. Again very, very well done Mad Head Games and I can’t wait how Nevertales continues. And good luck for Dark Realm: Queen oft he Flame! Another absolutly promising title.
And this second installment of Nevertales is another very well done 4,5 star game. I can only recommend it.
You've returned from school to visit your father at his famous Jazz Pepper Club during Mardi Gras, but everyone is hypnotized. Have they heard the wrong note?
Mad Head Games was quite sucessful with Rite of Passage 2 and Nevertales last year. So I was really interested to see if there's a possibility to top that again. And they did it again.
Before I start with the review something general. I'm playing many, many games and love many of them, but Mad Head Games are always something special, because there are new unique mini-games or Hidden Object puzzles inside. And nearly every developer seems to look at Mad Head to add new ideas to their games, because they seem to be afraid to experiment themself with new things. And that's why I soo love Mad Head Games. They try and experiment so much in their games, that it's always such a great feeling when you play them. I really hope more developers will try out new things, because I think we've seen enough of the same old things. Big Fish Studios always tried with their MCF franchise and every year (without mentioning 2012) these games are the best at BFG. So please devs, try and experiment!
Now for the game:
The storyline is wonderful. The Dixi Peppers were a very sucessful band until one of the members died. He wanted more money, like the other members, and they wouldn't want to grant him that wish. But now he seems to be back to take revenge on all his old band members. Is Frankie really back from the death, or has his brother, who's already been to a mental hospital behind all this. There are some surprising moments and in the very end everything turns out.
Then the music, the graphics, the sounds. Just one word AMAZING! Wonderful graphics, fitting music and a feeling, like you're in New Orleans. Even the voice overs have a New Orleans feeling. Wonderful done!
The difficulty is very good here. There's a map, so there's not to much backtracking, but you visit every place more than once, and there's always something to remember. There are some inventory items, which stay there for a long time until you can use them. The HO's are not too easy and there are more than 5 different kinds of HO's. Two of them are all new. Word and "Giving items back" and find hidden pairs. Also in every of the 24 HO's there's a Morphing Object. There are many mini games, some of them are all new and some of them are very good animated. For example when you're trapped in a taxi or when you're underwater and you need to get up to the surface. There are 44 collectible music notes, bronze, silver and gold achievements, a long Bonus Game, 44 collectible items, which unlock an extra HO's and a puzzle to restore a broken music store. Afterall I needed 4 hours to complete the main game. Normally I need around 2 hours for a CE main game. So this game has it all. Excellent game and a big THANK YOU to Mad Head Games. I can't wait for Rite of Passage 3 and Nevertales 2. Keep up the wonderful work!
I love Eipix and their flagship series Final Cut, but this third installment is even better, than my highest expectations. There weren't much games beside the popular MCF franchise, that were that great!
The storyline. You play Ms. Wolf again and this time a serial killer hunts your family. Every victim is sentenced to death in a place that looks like one of Morton Wolf's movies. The serial killer, called "The Director" plays a dirty game with you. He knows always what you do and follows you, while you try to save your family members in time, and talks some crazy nonsense about art makes immortal. I really love such mad personalities. While you are hard at work to save your family, the reporter Michael Harris is at your side to get the story of a lifetime, like ha sais. But can you trust him? Or the detective, which hasn't got the best name as detective. Find it out, I don't want to spoil who's behind the Directors mask.
The graphics are wonderful. They are winter / christmas themed, which is not perfectly fitting for the beginning of spring, but for the game it's perfect, because you'll also find a ship within a foyer and a beach within a house and more crazy things, because of Morton Wolf's projector projections. Every scene is nice done, with lot's of details, like in every Eipix game. The music is wonderful, some classic tracks from the first games were combined with some new ones in a wonderful way. When the Director speaks, there is an adventure theme that makes me want to catch that wicked man. Very well done and the right music in the right situations. The characters are life actors, with drawn faces, there are voice overs, which fit to the persons character. There are many persons you've already seen in FC 1 and 2 back in this third part.
The level of challenge is quite ok. It's not perfect, but in comparism to the other Eipix games it went up a bit. There are new puzzles, very different types of HO's. And sometimes two types of HO's combined in one. I've never seen that in a HOPA game before. Very creative! The gameplay is fastly going forward and could be a bit more challenging, with more running around and more things you have to keep in mind for some time until you find a useful item to do an action. But even that's better now if you compare it with the latest Eipix releases. There are 15 Morphing Objects in the HO's and 49 clapperboards to collect while playing. The MO's are hidden well and the clapperboards are hidden good too.
The CE comes with 4 playing modes, replayable cutscenes, puzzles, HO's and much more. There are many extras, so it's a worthy CE game!
Afterall an absolute Eipix winner and the best game in 2014 until today! Wonderful job Eipix team! Keep it going!
Artifex Mundi is known for it's wonderful HOPA games and this one is a new masterpiece created by them.
The storyline. In the intro you see a terrified woman running to the edge of the abyss, speaking words, that she shouldn't have spoken. But you journey starts on your fathers carriage on the way to your sisters wedding. But as soon as you arrive a bear crashes the wedding and kidnappes your sister. Together with her fiance Edward you follow the bear until you fall down into the forest. After finding your sister you realise, that the bear isn't the bad "guy" in this game, but Edward is. Can you stop the wedding and who's Edward and what has he to do with the Abyss? I don't want to spoil it. Only one thing: The two sisters life began different than they thought.
The graphics are wonderful. They are drawn, but so clear and atmospheric. Just like in the the other Artifex Mundi games. The soundtrack is epic and I really love it. I've only seen a few games with an atmosphere that good. The sounds are clear too. The characters are drawn animated and they move their lips while speaking. There is also some interaction with them. The voice overs are really good done and good understandable.
The Level of challenge was better in the other Artifex Mundi games, but it's quite better than in so many other games and because of the collectibles I rate it with 5 of 5 points. You can choose one of three playing modes, before you start. The gameplay is quickly going forward and not really challenging. But there are many nice animations while playing. There are around 15+ Hidden Object scenes in the game and they are sometimes silouhette, sometimes a list to find items with little interaction and there's one interactive HOS #find and use items#. The HO's aren't very easy. They're just right for me. There are many mini-games in the game, I didn't count them all. Some are classic mini-games and some are new types. They aren't too easy and not too hard. A good challenge for me. But now to the hardest point. In the game there are 30 spirits #fairys# and 28 ellusive objects #Morphind Objects# hidden. And those ellusive objects are very, very hard to find. Really nice done devs. Sometimes it took me about 5 minutes to find an object. The fairys are hidden in the gameplay windows, you can open. But be careful! If the window closes, because you've done all, then the spirit is lost and you can't find it anymore.
So afterall, this is definetly another 5 star game from Artifex Mundi and a worthy CE with many extras. Keep up the great work guys in Nightmares from the Deep: Davy Jones CE.
Elephant's Mystery Trackers series is well known for it's quality. This game is the long awaited sequel to the second game in the series, which was released years ago. It's now the sixth installment in the series and the best.
The storyline is great! You, the MT detective have to return to Raincliff, because I journalist has dissapeared. Fast you realize, that your last visit at Raincliff maybe wasn't that sucessfull and many invisibles are still roaming the streets. Raincliff is now the town of prisoners, where no police officers or authorities can do something against them. All hope depends on the MT detective now. But your not complete alone. There's a royal invisible man, which can help you for the beginning, but then he gets in trouble too. A great story with many background, just like I love it.
The graphics are brilliant, like we know and love it from Elephant games. Many details, animations and a great atmosphere are everything I can say about them. Or in one word amazing. The music is really good too. Some old, traditional themes from Raincliff are back, mixed with new adventure themes. They add a great adventure atmosphere to the gameplay. Nice done here.
The level of challenge. The Hidden Object scenes are very easy to play and no challenge, but the mini games are mostly new puzzles, they're not too hard, but not easy, there are many of them and they are good animated. The gameplay is like I love it. You have to run around a bit to get and use objects and remember good where you have something to do. The interactive map is a great helper here. There are frog collectibles and the point I really love is an all new frost mode, that you can switch on or off, like you want. There you have to collect morphing clothes, to keep yourself warm in the snow of Raincliff. I really love this, because it really makes sense. It's not just an extra, because when it's cold you fast can get too cold. The thought behind this is very, very good and that's the why I rate the level of challenge with 5 of 5, even if the HO's are that easy.
The CE comes with the usual extras and the usual secret room extra, that all Elephant Games have got, Afterall a worthy sequel, a worthy CE and the best game I've seen in 2014 yet. Nice, nice done Elephant Games!!!
