This is not a random point and click game. Keep this in mind when reading the bad reviews. This is a mystery game. I have watched the entire playthrough that others have done and fully intend on buying it. There are multiple endings you will get from choosing different paths. Read what they tell you carefully! You will need to go back and forth multiple times and it will take time to continue if you miss one small clue. If you are one that goes into a scene and clicks everything just to click be clicking it, you might make it through but you will indeed have the bad ending.
This has lots of playability. It really will not be everyone's cup of tea as it is a psychological thriller/mystery and has many twists. The point of the dreamland and artistry will become clear toward the end of the game but you have to play it with an open mind to make it that far. It states in the initial page that it's surreal and disturbing...believe that. Highly recommended that you DO NOT buy it UNTIL you've tried the demo.
I recommend this game!

This one was truly a rough gem. I'd read some of the reviews of the mostly unhappy folks that said this was dated, the throwback sort of game didn't appeal to them. This wasn't the case for me. I loved it!
Downside for some folks: Generally a side scrolling game. Point and click to get where you are going. No hints. No options. Minimal talking or direction. Lots of reading. When there are cut scenes or character interaction they talk...a lot. Graphics are 'old school'.
I really enjoyed it. The graphics weren't 3D or anything but they were crisp. Excellent shadowing. Even when your character, Joe, goes into dark areas he is a dark silhouette. Slower computers can run this on best graphics with ease. I had to read the speech and turn the volume down because I had my husband in the room and we watched movies while I played but if you read faster than they go the >> arrows skip to the next portion of reading, not entirely skipping the conversation.
There were times I was stuck and had to go back many many times and reclick EVERYTHING but it wasn't annoying, it was still fun. Ordinarily I hate that but it was so interesting to see where they were going with the story that it didn't bother me at all. I wished for more in the ending and I wish they had a map to jump from area to area but it still doesn't lessen my rating for it. Play the demo before you buy but I certainly don't regret the purchase.
I'm a huge fan of Agatha Christie games. I love the Hercule Poirot series and mysteries and was very excited when I saw this one on BFG. Having previously played 3 others, I know this is not an HOG and anyone that plays the Demo version will know that right away. I don't think that should earn it less stars. The game plays like other AC's in that you find areas and clues to solve murders as a brilliant detective. The ego points were just funny little icing on the cake.
Game play isn't the easiest to get use to. If you double click in an area quickly enough he'll go a half step faster but you will sometimes want to bang your head on your desk at the slowness of his roll. Occasionally, the game glitches when you are on a character and trying to choose look vs. speak. I don't hole that against this game either. As a general rule I can speed through BFG's HOGs lightning fast. Within a few hours I'm left with nothing to do but replay or find another one to replay. I gave AC's ABC Murders 5 stars because even when I know bits and pieces of the storyline already, it took me several days of gameplay and concentration to finish. I love that! I want more of that. This game is totally worth the money if you love detective stories. Again, the controls can be annoying but well worth it in the end.
I have had very few game developers I get excited about these days and every fewer do I rush out there and buy the game right away but MadHeadGames are truly amazing! They have come up with many new puzzles. More puzzles and more combinations than other devs.
The storyline, itself, wasn't the best I've seen but it did keep me wondering what was next and that's really something. Sadly, I tend to guess the outcome of most mystery games early on and lose interest.
The graphics are phenomenal! Some cut scenes are so realistic! The music and the camera shakes really do make you nervous. There was only one time near the end that I laughed and said "c'mon sister, do I have to do EVERYTHING?" but it was more in jest than seriousness.
I do NOT regret getting the collector's edition. A whole bonus section of the game depicting the lantern use in 1912. Also finding all the eyes gives you a puzzle at the end. (I was concerned I'd not be able to complete it as I did miss one and it was in an area I could not return to. My fingers weren't fast enough when I saw it. I was able to return once it was complete.) Puzzles I can go back and play were amazing as well.
Once again I can't say enough good things about his developer, the puzzles, the graphics...just amazing.
I recommend this game!

It has a very cute story line, characters and backdrop. The trouble with this one is that being a free game you have to wait extensively long time limits to gain the energy you need to complete tasks. In the tutorial you are unable to click anything they do not want you to click (ie to explore). Once you do start placing items that help with your energy, you must wait 3 minutes, 7 minutes, 6 hours to get energy built up to accomplish other tasks. I'm quickly finding that it's most effective to just get your energy and use your windows key to leave the game and do things like type reviews.
I had begun to write how much I longed for more plots to grow things and apparently I had not leveled up enough because upon returning to my game I found that if you complete enough tasks you will be able to buy more fountains for energy, plots for the gardens, fruit trees, etc. I do still wish this were a purchase once game rather than a free-buy-perks game but I've not been able to stop playing it so in my book that's a pretty great game and time waster. :)

I played this today and finished it in the time it took my husband to watch a football game. I didn't understand the beginning and didn't understand what it was I was doing. The options are extremely minimal. The game moves slowly and the story while interesting is not really worth the game purchase. If I'd not gotten it for free I would be really upset that I'd paid for it.
It is just an okay game. If you are passing time, the storyline is interesting and it doesn't leave you hanging for part two. It's not phenomenal.
I finished the game itself in less 2 or so hours but unlocked lots more and played another hour. The storyline is a good who-dun-it and you have to determine who committed the crime. On the side though you collect trophies, Sheriff stars and shoot at the bad guys. Multiple towns and many places inside towns. It's a good story and while I've seen better graphics, the complexity of the game makes up for it. Unlocking 150 stars gain you unlimited access to each place you've been before and you can get even more trophies for racing against time to find items. Very good game :)
I've played hundreds of HOG games and this is the first one I was SO crazy excited about that I sent emails to Mad Head Games asking when it would be out after I tried the trial edition. I followed their facebook page and waited for updates. I finished it in a day because I couldn't walk away from it.
Upon first read of the storyline you may think "oh great, another alien invasion tale" but no matter what you think, you're wrong. The storyline could have been a screenplay for a movie on the big screen with major actors and actresses playing the parts. The graphics are amazing and until they start talking quickly it's almost real.
The star scenes are gorgeous. The mini games are new and exciting. You have to also find space ships in scenes to unlock extras and orbs/morphs inside mini search areas.
Why haven't you bought this yet? Cmon, go do it! It's fun, exciting, gorgeous graphically, refreshing storyline over the usual dark and murderous HOGs lately and it's one you can play over and over again! I will. :)
I received this a while ago as a free game giveaway on another site. I'm SO glad I didn't buy this one. I've played others in the series and they were not that bad but this one, sigh, okay the kidnapper's voice was so annoying that about 1/2 way through the game I wanted to be the main character so "I" could murder him. I did love that the puzzles were not repetitive, they were really good and unlike many I've done before. I did get stuck in a couple spots, really stuck and had to look up walkthroughs. I NEVER have to do that. It would have been a really good game if I wasn't so annoyed by the "killer".

I didn't expect much from this game. I'd gotten it a few weeks ago as a free game giveaway. Aside from a misspelled word or two it was very interesting, good detective story, almost believable and while it's never scary it does leave you intrigued and wanting to finish the whole game in one sitting.
