- This is a very different kind of game. It takes about 10 minutes or so to get the hang of it. It isn't difficult just different. Once you figure out the gameplay it goes smoothly.
- Based on the other reviews I thought this would be more of an adventure game. But it's mostly looking for HO.
- The HO are not lists, and not one scene at a time. you travel around looking for what you need. (several scenes at a time, but not too many)
- They don't tell you why you're searching for whatever it is your searching for. You just have to find it and put it where they tell you and you'll find out what happens. More often than not it's not logical. (ex: collect 9 almonds to put in a bucket, then collect 8 drops of water to put in the bucket. Then the bucket will grow a flower that you need to open the door)
- the mini-games are interesting, on the easy side. the games that might be more difficult are easily skippable.
- you can have as many hints as you need, whenever you need it but you have to solve a puzzle first to earn the hint. (I prefer solving puzzles to HO so I kept pressing hint)
- this game is certainly different and interesting. But unlike other reviewers, I wouldn't say that it requires you to use your brain. Once you figure out how the game works, all you're doing is searching for objects. The game tells you what to find, and then it tells you where to put it. No heavy thinking involved.
I personally don't enjoy HOG so I didn't buy the game, but I was intrigued enough to play the full hour demo. Even though I don't usually like searching for HO, I still considered buying this game just because it's something different and interesting.
I would tell you to try the demo and see for yourself. But give yourself time to get used to the gameplay before making a decision.
There are many reviews saying "it gets better as you get into it" and so I waited until I finished the game before reviewing.
- The HO scenes do get better - each one more interactive than the last. But even so, they weren't amazing. they went from awful (the first one) to decent (the last one)
- puzzles were on a kindergarten level. There were maybe 2 in the whole game that had substance (though not in any way challenging)
- tasks were also extremely easy. I recommend this game for anyone who likes to play in zombie mode - just turn off your brain and click where you have to click. There is no challenge at all.
- The story had some potential but it wasn't fleshed out. This game just gives you the bare bones of a story. I guess you have to use your imagination to fill in the rest. much of the story they do give you makes no sense.
- Theres a transporter map, but it isn't necessary. you never need to go more than 3 scenes away from where you are. I actually prefer being able to wonder around a game. It feels more "real" than being confined to a few locations at a time. I have a terrible sense of direction so I like to challenge myself and see if I can find where I need to go without a map. I know that the vast majority of fishies don't agree with me on this, and prefer less back and forth.
- There is a journal of sorts - it contains notes that you pick up in the game and cut-scenes that you can rewatch. I looked though it during the game when I was confused about the characters I was supposed to be finding but found that none of the info there was helpful.
I recommend this game to kids aged 7-8 based on the level of challenge. Or those who like to play with their brain turned off. Try it for yourself - contrary to what other reviewers were saying, I found that the demo will give you a clear idea of what the game is like.
You could tell that the developers put thought and effort into this game. The mini-games were challenging and unique. The HO were actually fun to do and I'm not a HO fan. The graphics were amazing. This game was full of little details that I loved, that other games lack, details that show you that thought went into this.
My favorite part was the journal! It's scrapbook style, really cute and keeps track of the story. It also has a page for each of the characters in the story and some info about them- I loved that! I kept going back to the journal to see if anything new was added. This game is a cut above the rest. It sets a new standard for me to compare other games to.
I got the CE and I recommend it. The bonus chapter is not essential to the original story but it does continue the story and gives you a better ending than the original SE story has.
this game is unique and laugh-out-loud funny! It's a light, fun game that I enjoyed playing all the way to the end! My pre-teen kids enjoyed it as well - this is for all ages. Loreen and Nathaniel are my favorite couple and I'd love to get more of this series!! I've played this twice back to back. It's the first time I've ever done that. My 10 year old played it 4 times so far, and she doesn't like to repeat games either. I 100% recommend this game!
I love this series!! The second game is the better of the two, but both are very enjoyable. This is a game for all ages. My Pre-teen kids enjoyed it and so did I. It's not that challenging but the storyline is amazing! the story is light and funny. you keep switching between the 2 characters and I love them both. I wish they would continue the series!!
I would have liked this game to continue - I want to see the alchemist and Librarian get their revenge. They say they have something planned but I want the details!
I personally didn't like this game. I couldn't connect with the characters or the story at all. The story is a forgettable one.
There is no diary - which is a major negative for me. I took a break of several weeks while playing the game and when I came back I forgot the storyline and who the characters were. I will no longer buy games without a diary. And the fact that I'd already forgotten it all also tells you that this is not an absorbing game.
The graphics are gorgeous and the gameplay is OK, but nothing stands out from any other game.
I got the CE and do not recommend. I usually get the CE for the bonus chapter, and it was a very short and silly bonus chapter.
Everything I've ever disliked in a game is here. I got it as a DD and purchased without trying the demo. I only now realized how old this game is. I usually like old games and don't mind simplistic graphics, but the graphics here weren't simplistic - they were blurry. I get a headache every time i try a HOS. The HO are not well hidden, but rather blurred into the background so that you can hardly see them. I found myself just clicking hint over and over. There is no map. There are no difficulty options. There is no way to turn off the sparkles. This entire game is just wondering around to find which HOS is available to play so you can get your next tool. waste of time and money.
I just finished the demo and bought the game right after. I am a puzzle lover, preferably puzzles that make you use your brain. This was right up my alley. The puzzles have easy and hard modes and I played on hard. It's so satisfying to finally find a game with puzzles meant for someone over the age of 6. If puzzles aren't for you then you can always try the easy mode or just skip them. I disagree with the reviewers saying that the puzzles interrupted game play.
The storyline was OK but very poorly executed. There are very few puzzles, and those puzzles it has are on a 1st grade level. There are SO MANY hidden object scenes! way too many. Every single one of them are FROGs, many ornate pieces that all look the same and may or may not look like the actual piece you need to find. And of course, there is no option to play something else instead of the HO. I just clicked around until I got most of it and used hints for the rest, enduring the penalties. (not something I usually do). But trying to find these pieces that I'm not sure what it looks like or what it's supposed to be was too much.
