I bought this game because of the very high ratings; wish I tried the trial version first. The graphics were beautiful, but the minigames were way too easy. I just zoomed through them. It is perfect for beginners or for someone who is just killing time, but not if you are looking for a challenge.
I recommend this game!

Many new, interesting minigames. No handholding so be prepared to be challenged; this is truly for advanced players. The collectables are very difficult to see, but there are so many of them it really doesn't make a difference. There is nothing childish about the game (no cute talking animals to help you along the way) and the puzzles are well integrated into the story, not just for something to do. I wish there were more like this one.
I wish I had actually read the text of the reviews and not just looked at the stars before I bought this game. This is just a run of the mill HOG--no challenge, no puzzles and no real story. By calling it a "collector's edition" you are fooled into thinking there was something special about it. I played more interesting games back in the 80's. If you're just looking for something to do while you're watching TV this is your game. Otherwise, pass on it.
WARNING, MINOR SPOILER: Richard's sarcasm was what makes this series fun. Without him, Grim Tales will not standout. If you want to spin off Anna's daughter with her own series that's fine, but keep Anna and Ricard going.
Richard has always been my favorite game character. I've always loved his snarky remarks. I was sooo happy when it appeared that he had finally returned, but alas it is not so. I will say no more for those of you who haven't played the game yet. Let's just say that I really enjoyed this game until the end. That's the only reason I didn't give the storyline 5 stars.

I'm so glad I ignored the other reviews' comments. This new series, and I hope it is a series, has great potential. Sure, it's not a true Sherlock Holmes story, but there is enough deduction to make it interesting. What I really like is that there are no cute, little critters helping me along. We're not trying to save a relative or lover from a demon who wants to steal their souls. And there's no demon who has been inadvertently awakened from the past determined to rule the world. So far, I haven't even had to use a paperclip to fix a broken zipper...yet. Give this game a chance. If enough people don't buy it, there won't be any incentive for the developer to hone the character or future story lines and we be stuck with more of the demons, critters, and paperclips.
I rarely write reviews, but I really enjoyed this game and want to make sure they continue with this series. I liked the way you played each of the characters so that you had to use different skills to progress through the game rather than the same approach over and over again. I liked the storyline as well, which is also a rarity for me. The bottom line is: give this game a chance, I bet you will like it.
This new series has great potential. By taking characters from other successful games they have breathed new life into them. You switch back and forth playing one of 3 depending on the type of skill needed at the time. I was happy to see that Richard is along for the ride, however, I prefer the original actor who did the voice-over for him (This guy is close, but just misses the snarkiness of the original). There were several original games and though the directions could have been a bit clearer, I found them to be fun. Bottom line: I strongly recommend this game. I can't wait for the next one.
I have played every previous MCFs and really enjoyed them, so I didn't try this one out first. BIG MISTAKE. They have completely changed the game play. You are no longer immersed in an interesting story where, as the detective, you integrate witnesses, solve mysteries etc. Instead, it's a series of "rooms" where you play an HOG in order to allow you access to another room and yet another HOG. The cartoonish looking character on the "cover" should have warned me something was off. In an attempt to make it more challenging, they added an optional, timed play, but I want to be intellectually challenged, not rushed. I will not be buying another MCF again.

I can't believe so many people are marking this game down because it is not the same storyline as Poe's version. I will bet that most gamers haven't even read it. What is important to me is whether this game was fun to play.. and it WAS. It is back to the true detective story again... no ghosts or witches. The minigames are a mixture of challenging and not so challenging and Dupin is again clean-shaven (he is, afterall, supposed to be a gentleman). Play it. You won't be disappointed.
