I'm flummoxed by the near perfect 5-star rating. I can see where this game has potential. Honestly, I'm never going to find it. I won't look anymore.
This review is based on the one hour trial. The first and most important issue for me is that I just can't see the screen...everything seems so small the items are hard to find. That's not fun for me. I LOVE a challenge, but I want it to be because items are so well hidden and so cleverly designed, not because they're so small. To me, this is a fatal flaw and nothing else after this really matters.
I do have a sense that this game doesn't flow really smoothly. Because of the fatal flaw, however, this is just a guess, not an informed judgment.
The directions for writing a helpful review say not to report technical issues. I think the inability to see the game is a technical issue, so I guess this isn't a helpful review. Sorry.
I HOPE THIS IS HELPFUL: USE THE ONE HOUR TRIAL before you spend non-refundable money on a game you can't see.
I don't recommend this game.

OK, This is a great one-off game. It's unlike anything I've played before and this will probably be true for you as well. It captures elements of Adventure, HO, and Puzzle but presents in a very different way.
What is different about this? That's a hard question to answer. How 'bout this: comic strip like. There's nothing funny about this. What I mean is, each task you complete seems isolated, somehow...even though each one really does flow into the next. You accomplish something, you've completed that section, but it still leads you to another task to be accomplished in another "scene." It's comic-strip like in the sense that each scene stands alone even as it leads you to the next. This game lists chapters and there are 40.
As for the story line: it progresses incrementally. I got chills as I played it because the subject matter is scary in an Orwellian way. There aren't monsters and goblins. The "set design" is spare and, with few exceptions, black and white. The coloration contributes to the "feel" of the game.
I think you'll love it or hate it. I don't think you'll be indifferent.
I suggest taking advantage of the free one hour trial. You'll experience all the elements of the game in that hour and you'll know if you're going to enjoy it or not. From what I can tell about gaming experts, they complain if the game is too short, yet make sure to announce that it took them only three hours to complete. I don't judge a game by its length and I don't try to rush to the finish line. I like to enjoy the game. (Hmm, I'm probably not really an expert.) I think this took me six hours? So experts will probably finish in two. :)
Finally, about the point system which has drawn much criticism: Point earning is not central to the game. If you were to run out of points the game would be "over," but you're given the option to try again. The points you accrue can be used to buy hints and solutions, basically. I forgot this was an option and so didn't spend any points. I did lose points for errors. It's just another way of getting blocked for too many mis-clicks in any HOG. Aside from the "purchase" aspect, there is also a help button, referred to as an SOS button in the game.
For me, the value of the points/score will be if I play this game again, I can measure my performance and accuracy by my point total at the end. Those who were "offended" by the point scoring system need to think outside the box a little.
AND SO, Three cheers for a developer trying something different!!!
I recommend this game!

I played and reviewed the CE version of this game (very positively). But in reality, while I purchased the CE, I played the SE because I didn't play the Bonus Content and that, along with strategy guide are the only significant differences I detect (unless you really like wallpaper).
I must have had a cocktail or two too many when I wrote the CE review. Clearly I was in a good mood. Here's the real deal:
This game is poor. And it's a huge surprise coming from Elephant Games IMO. There are good examples of "time travel" with games taking place in two different time continuums. Angelica Weaver: Catch Me When You Can is an example of excellence in this genre. Ghost Library is not. Where did this fail? This game is divided between Shakespearean times and an undefined "present day." I think you have to be faithful to the realities of the time period you're in. Here's something that happened in Ghost Library: while in the Shakespearean portion of the game the player has to "create" an ultra-violet lamp. Well, that's completely anachronistic.
When I reviewed the CE, I suggested that the whole game was greater than the sum of its parts. I've completed the story now (less the bonus chapter) and I can tell you I'm wrong. The individual parts told the whole story:
a. Poorly lit, unexciting HOG. Yes they tried something NOT THAT DIFFERENT anymore: you place an item where it belongs in the scene rather than finding an item. The problem is that many times in this game you could place an item almost anywhere and it would have been at least as appropriate as the "right" place. The concept was good, the execution not so much.
b. The back and forth, back and forth, back and forth, back and forth. Tired of me writing "back and forth?" Try doing it in the game CONSTANTLY. It got old.
c. It is humorous to me that there is a sliding scale in the options section to determine the volume of music. There is hardly any music so your decision is moot. This is too bad. I just completed a game, Shiver: Poltergeist, where the music is absolutely brilliant to the point where I thought it really contributed to the storyline, the feel of the game and importantly, my enjoyment.
d. The puzzles were facile and uninteresting. This little vignette was referred to as a puzzle: in the normal course of game play you find a series of numbers and choose them, exactly as written, on number reels to open a lock. Puzzle???
In its favor I will say that every puzzle had a reset opportunity and every puzzle gave the goal. Not all the the directions were great, but at least an effort was made.
e. Two things were meant to represent the storyline and hold it together: a) saving kids in the current day from a creepy-evil clown-like character whom you had to defeat by b) changing the unhappy endings of Shakespearean stories to happy endings. The premise has promise. They just didn't bring it home. Not even close. I recall one reviewer who said the clown-like character scared her so much she nearly "wet herself every time he appeared." If this character scares you, you cover your eyes during episodes of I Love Lucy. There was nothing scary about him or about the game. AT ALL. Nothing exciting. NOTHING.
f. Finally, I have to write this because wrong is just wrong: there are many instances where the textual parts of the game are incorrect grammatically. They betrayed a lack of understanding of English idioms...or, they were just typos and absolutely should have been caught in editing and review. That these errors were not caught and fixed is an insult to the English-speaking audience which pays a lot of money to support the developers, retailers (BFG), etc. Get it right.
While everything else here graded out as a two by me, I gave challenge a three. I know this is going to sound mean, but so what, I wasted my time playing this game...the extra point is because it was a real challenge to stick with this game to the end of the regular section. As I said, I won't even try the bonus gameplay. Having to play this game one second longer is NOT a bonus.
Do NOT buy the CE. Do NOT buy the SE. Don't waste your time, your money or even a free coupon on any version of this game.
And finally, please, please forgive me for the stunning review I gave this five days ago.
Sometimes I recommend games which I don't personally like but I can see that others may love. For instance, I don't enjoy an overabundance of HOS. Others LOVE them. If they are well-designed HOS I'll still recommend the game because the HOS Lover will love the game even if I don't. I'm sorry to say that nothing in this game has earned a recommendation of any sort. It has earned the distinction of, perhaps, being the worst game I've played in the last year.
Let me apologize in advance. It seems like negative reviews are frowned upon here. Negative reviews are almost always voted on overwhelmingly as "unhelpful." I have tried to tell you why I don't favor this game and I'm just being honest.
I don't recommend this game.

I loved this game. It was technically superior to every other game I've played. I couldn't stop playing until I finished. My family thought I'd abandoned them. Oops. Obviously it was tons of fun.
The VOs were exceptional as were the cut scenes. There were many of them and this contributed to this game being ADVENTURE first, HOG second. There were plenty of HOGs and they were well executed, and meaningful in terms of what was added to the inventory. But, there weren't HOS every other minute and I like it like that. This is the perfect ratio of adventure to HOG.
There were several puzzles but I didn't find them enormously challenging. They were all fun and unlike some other games, the puzzles weren't thrown in just to make the game longer.
Although there was a bit of the back and forth, the moves didn't seem wasted. I achieved something, learned something, added something to the inventory and had to go back to use it.
Fun Factor: As I said above, this was VERY fun.
Visual/Sound Quality: Again, as I said above, the VOs were great. The visual quality was excellent. It was a dark and moody adventure and the lighting was slightly muted to give that feel. (It also rained in the story the whole time and that was great). The Music is the BEST PAIRING with a game I have ever heard. It never got in the way and was never boring. I think the music contributed to the game in a way I've never experienced. It was moving.
The challenge was there, but I really took my time with this and enjoyed the great audio-visuals and the game play so I was careful, thoughtful and rarely got stuck.
Here's a couple negatives: In part one we are introduced to the two main characters. One is the unseen protagonist and the other is an antagonist (I Think). After the first part of the game we never see the antagonist again. I think he could have played a pivotal, interactive role, highlighting the antagonism but it just didn't happen.
The other negative is the abrupt, inconclusive ending. Now, this game is either begging for a sequel OR it's wise to buy the CE, not the SE as I did because of the "Shiver" bundle sale from BFG.
These negatives DO NOT diminish the value, enjoyment or quality of this game. I'm sorry I can't be more specific about what I mean. I promise, you will not be disappointed when you play this. You will know that you've experienced something very special. In fact, even with the negatives, this is my new favorite game!
I recommend this game!

This is an exceptional game. Even for a game that is of an older vintage it is wonderful and, therefore, timeless. If the developers did a redo I'm sure they'd add voice over, improve the animation and the cut scenes.. Despite these deficits, the game is still outstanding and way ahead of its time.
It's incredibly fun and it is scary. The music is perfectly suited to the subject matter. It is very challenging but not because it's a mess. Some games are hard because of constant back and forth or poorly designed HOS and because the storylines are nonsensical. This is not the case here. The challenge is real. (I suggest not rushing through Instead enjoy the scenery, the vibrant colors, the "feel" of the music as it anoints this scary game as a thriller. I know this sounds like I'm critiquing something important or cultural or classical...well...in the gaming world, to me, this is all of that.
The storyline is the search for a missing husband. (Not a spoiler, you find this out in the first seconds of play.) Everything in the game contributes to this storyline.
There is no wasted movement. No unnecessary back and forth. The game pushes on and you know you're making progress. Along the way you'll encounter among the best HOS you will ever see. No repeated objects. Incredibly well hidden...not easy to find, but well worth the search. The challenge isn't because the scenes are cluttered but because the items are just brilliantly designed and hidden. The objects are chameleon-like.
As I said, the music-audio is great. The feel of the game, set design, as I like to call it, is great. When you move forward in the game you feel like you've really accomplished something. There are scenes within the chapters of this game that you've never seen before...inventive, creative action. I'm guessing also, way ahead of its time, there are "beyond objects," or morphing objects. I'm not sure what else to say.
If you don't like this game, hunt me down and ask me to pay for it. CAVEAT EMPTOR: This is scary. It's not for kids. And if you don't like being scared, don't buy it. (Of course, I'm thinking you won't hunt me down and if you try you won't find me...:) ).
I don't think you'll want to do anything but agree with my estimation of this very high-quality game.
I recommend this game!

I'm not sure when this game was made but if it's not from the first generation it has a terribly outdated feel to it.
-There are no voice overs.
-There's no animated animation (cartoonish characters don't walk from one place to another, they reappear each time, slightly closer to their destination)
-The cursor is very large arrow. If you see something to investigate, the magnifying glass is inside the arrow. If you see something to add to your inventory the hand is inside the arrow. While the arrow is large, the hand and magnifying glass are very small and the area in which they illuminate is very small so you can easily miss it.
-The puzzles were crazy easy.
-The story line is not unusual (again, though, if this is a really old game, then maybe it was ahead of its time). There's a mad scientist. He captures someone. The hunt is on. This still doesn't qualify as an adventure.
-Challenge: the challenge was to continue playing. If I weren't so obsessive I'd have stopped.
OK. Is there anything good? Well at the beginning I thought that the HOS were good. Items were well designed and very well hidden. There were also a few interactive items. After about the 1/3 point of the game there were no more interactive items.
If you really like HOS you might well like this because there is an abundance of them. I suspect even the greatest fans of HOS will tire of the repetition. Each scene was used several times and had many, many items which could have been the object of the hunt without using them again. Unfortunately, I had to find many ashtrays (ashtrays?), pencils, cigars, books...over and over again.
If you want a blast from the past and one HOG after another then perhaps you'll like it. I'd run the other way.
I don't recommend this game.

This review is going to sound like an ad against getting the game, but it's not. Keep in the back of your mind, as you read this, that Ghost Library is great and I whole-heartedly recommend getting it.
1. This game is not hard. If you want to struggle to outwit the developers, this is not your game.
2. The puzzles are easy. They are not stupid, just easy. The best challenge was the first. It was a picture jumble which the player has to reassemble to make a real picture. Not hard, but lots of fun.
3. There are not too many HOGs and that's a good thing. They are the alternative HOG where you are given a picture of an item and need to place it correctly in the scene. This was not always easy but it was not a hand wringer like some.
4. The story line progressed and the goals were clear. There was not a lot of back and forth, so you won't feel like you're wasting your time.
5. Background music, sound effects and the infrequent voice overs were good.
Add up all of the above and you'd think I'd give it an overall of three, right? Wrong. The whole is far greater than the sum of its parts. This game was totally, undeniably fun and I think you will thoroughly enjoy it (unless you're the type who can't play a game just for fun but instead have to solve the debt crisis and end world poverty while plodding through a game).
CE versus Regular edition: I got the CE and I'm not sure the value is there so I'm glad I used credits. There aren't achievements (if there are they are so well hidden I couldn't find them). There aren't any side collectibles throughout the game. There is bonus play. I don't think that's enough to justify paying twice the price of a regular SE, so if you're not using credits I'd recommend skipping the CE. BUT GET THIS GAME. YOU WON'T REGRET IT!!!! I PROMISE.
I recommend this game!

Well, this is a tough one because I see everyone's reviews are so glowing and I just don't feel the same.
a. As one reviewer said in a different way: There are three parts to this game and while the first and second presented a bit of a challenge, the third seemed like an afterthought AND as though the developers were late for a very important date.
b. There is CONSTANT back and forth and for no purpose. The majority of "challenge" in this game is trying to remember which path to take.
c. A very annoying programming error: if you come near the bottom of the screen you're going to go to the Main Menu and have to press "continue" continuously.
d. I'm a fairly bright guy and I just didn't understand this game at all. The progression was not evident and some of the tasks were present because, well, there had to be tasks or there wouldn't be any game.
e. The visuals were OK but nothing to write home about. They were not a disappointment. They were ho hum.
f. There were no HOS. I typically complain because there are too many but now I'm complaining because there are ZERO. As for the puzzles: they became increasingly interesting, fun and challenging. At the beginning they were crazy easy. I suspect those complaining about the easy puzzles didn't get much beyond the trial stage. The last few puzzles were great IMO.
g. Storyline: Again, I have no idea why I did what I did. The end of the story was so abrupt I'm not sure how I completed the game. Wait...maybe I didn't. Maybe you get the whole story if you buy the CE. Based on what I experienced, I'm glad I didn't.
Often I recommend a game even if it's not my style of game because it's technically well-made and I know others will like it. Despite the plethora of positive reviews, I can't recommend it
I don't recommend this game.

As with the other entries from Blue Tea Games, this is an example of superior game design. By all rights, this shouldn't be a game that attracts me: it's really all hidden object with a good storyline thrown in that guides the quest for hidden objects. BUT: it is so good at what it does that I cannot NOT LIKE IT. I saw complaints that the HOS in Cinderella were too grainy, hard to pick out, etc. I disagree. I don't think they are too grainy. I think they are more difficult to find than in the past games and that, to me, says they were placed better, disguised better. Is it really fun to play a HOG game but exert no mental energy to solve it????
I think this game is VERY FUN, because the HOs were hard to find. The ways items were hidden were ingenious. From one who prefers adventure to HOG, I though this was tons of fun and unless you don't like a challenge, you will also.
The scenes were NOT too grainy. I think there is more detail in these scenes and so I think it's called grainy because it is a little harder to figure out. The reality is, this is the best of the Dark Parables in terms of visuals/set design. Well done!
Level of Challenge is higher than in the past because the of the more difficult placement I mentioned above. As for the puzzles....not so difficult. these could and should be improved and then this game, this series of games (which I hope continues) will be unassailably the best series of HO games out there.
The Storyline is fun because it's based on fairy tales we're all familiar with but they all add interesting twists. This game is no different than its predecessors.
This is really high quality stuff and I recommend it without question. You will have fun.
One note for the developers: the game stands well on its own/the series is great. I don't think anyone plays the sam games in a series game after game, but, whether or not one does: the games need to do something different just to change it up. This is not a complaint at all. BUT, you do know what you're gonna get and it would be good to add a surprise element soon to keep this fresh. On the whole, though, no complaints.
I recommend this game!

This was among the first games I purchased when starting to play Hidden Object online. It was very fun the first time because this was all so new. It was very fun this time because, although there have been clear strides in the genre since Salem Witch, the game is just flat out fun. This is not a sentimental scoring.
There are aspects which make this game very attractive: collectibles. There are two: ravens and clovers. About 30 of the former and 65? of the latter. They are well-placed, not disguised but blend in so well with the surroundings that they do disappear and that makes their acquisition all the more fun. I liked this the first time. I loved it the second. Among collectibles even NOW, this is about as good as it gets. These alone could account for a 5 in the fun category.
The visuals are great. The "set design" is well done. Great artwork. Audio is non-existent save background music which, though played over and over again non-stop, is not boring, intrusive or annoying. There are no voice overs. Instead there's the cloud/balloon method of communication. I wasn't disappointed by it. It's not a five because this area of online games has probably evolved the most.
Level of challenge: it wasn't over-taxing. Here's a twist: it's not a CE, in fact I don't think there is a CE. There is no guide. What guidance there is is more or less included in the journal. This is all you get. Unless I missed it completely, there wasn't even a way to figure out what exactly to do with puzzles. It was hit and miss. And if you invest a little bit of energy you'll be rewarded with great, fun puzzles, the completion of which is very satisfying.
The story line is complex and, really, has less to do with witches than with human rights!!! There are no moralistic statements, but it's clear there was a suspect class and it's witches and they handle the subject matter well.
Again, NOT just because this was among my first games played, I highly recommend it. It was more fun the second time around. This is NOT a game for a 10 year old. It's not easy. It is a challenge. And, IT IS FUN!!!
If, somehow, you don't have it already, get it. I'm nearly certain you will not be disappointed.
I recommend this game!
