I purchased this game and the prequel at the same time. I didn't like the prequel. (I did review it.)
This game is no improvement.
There is no map. You go back and forth between old times and new times every time you change a light. The rooms you can access differ when you hit the light. There are lots of rooms, and yet very few places all at the same time. Weird.
The hints are not helpful.. they consist of "there is nothing you can do here".
You are constantly going back and forth, trying to find out where everything is, where there is to do something, where the new HOS is. Some of the time, the objects you need to find are hidden behind other objects in the junk pile.(There are 23 HOS (I think), mostly junk pile lists, some put the object where it belongs.)
There are no goals, or at least if there are, they were not stated and listed anywhere I could find. Meaning that when I returned to the game after a break, I had to figure out where I left off. Sometimes the break was for a day or two. Not fun. When I returned I had to remember, again, where everything was... so I would use the hint (there is nothing you can do here...) until I found the room/scene I needed.
The journal is not useful.
The ending is rushed. The whole game goes really slowly... right up to the end play. Then you find everything you need quickly, use it immediately, and the game ends.
This game was not fun to play. I played through it only because I purchased it; I wish that I had done the trial on the first game, I would have known not to purchase either game.
Yuck.
I don't recommend this game.

I hated this game for two main reasons: the HOS and the traveling. The puzzles were annoying, too.
Most of the HOS were not only junk piles, they were very crowded junk piles and it was hard to find things. Some things were almost invisible. You start off looking at 12 items... until you look closer and find out that you have 15, 18, even 26! things to find... considering how irritating it is to find one thing...
And there's lots of HOS.
You have to walk back and forth a lot. In the first part (which seems to last forever) you have 4 main areas. Each of these areas has both a "normal" mode and a "nightmare from your dreams" section. So, all 4 areas has you going back and forth through all the rooms, in both venues. There is no map, much less a jump map.
Entering the second part, everything is in "nightmare" mode, so a little reprieve there, but now you have more areas in addition to the first ones.
So, you find one thing. Do that. Go back. Get the next thing (by the way? you really can't collect lots of things first), do that... etc.
And given that the rooms from "nightmare" all look very similar it's easy to get confused.
Puzzles? Yeah, lots of them.
One of the puzzles was a combination, so you could not do it until you "found" the combination. HOWEVER, you did not know that you "found" the combination. It was on a floor, as part of the design. (I think it was the combination, I'm still not sure. I skipped the puzzle.) I was not aware that it was even part of a puzzle... there was nothing to click on to emphasize it.
And every skipped puzzle added 1/2 hour to your play time clock.
The story line was good, but with all the rest of the problems... frustration so much that it totally ruined anything.
I really, really wish I hadn't bought it.
I really, really, really don't recommend it!
I don't recommend this game.

I enjoyed the other games in this series... enough that when the CE came out, I didn't wait until the SE.
Frankly, I would have liked to skip this game in either form.
It was VERY short... I finished the main game in a couple of hours. I don't remember how long the bonus took, but it wasn't much.
The puzzles were extremely simple. The story line was lame and disjointed. The HOS were nothing special.
Basically, if you feel you have to get this game, try it first.
Then don't buy the CE, it's not worth the money or credits.
I don't recommend this game.

This review is based on 45 minutes of the trial.
This game is like nothing I've done before. It is original, quirky, and sarcastic. The graphics are crisp, the colours clean and the sound good.
That being said, I hated it.
The controls are hard to figure out.
The game is more like a giant cartoon. There are very extended, uncontrollable dialogue. You meet a character. You chose to talk. And it takes forever. The topics you can talk about are listed on the bottom of the screen. You keep choosing a topic until the topic circle dims. There are usually several topics... but for every click on a topic (and sometimes you have to keep going back) you spend an inordinate amount of time in conversation. Basically, you are watching an interactive cartoon.
I don't want to watch a game. I want to play a game.
I don't recommend this game.

I was all ready to love this game. I love darker games. Intriguing story line, promise of something new.
It started... wow, perfect!....
Then my character woke up.
And I became sad, because it was just a normal, run of the mill game after all.
The game was disappointingly short. I finished the main game in 3.5 hours. I didn't get the time for the bonus chapter, but it was short, too. Together couldn't have been more than 4.25 hours. For a CE, I expect more.
The puzzles were on the easier side. No real tough challenges. I only skipped some of the ones where there is hand/eye coordination.
The HOS were very easy to see, surprisingly so in the darker screens. They are not overwhelming in the game; I felt that it was just the right amount, more would have detracted from the enjoyment.
The only complaint I have with the sound tract in total is that the narrator for the main character (you) has an awful voice.
If I wasn't expecting so much more from it and it wasn't so short, I would have probably would have made it 4 stars.
But, still, a good game to play... I think you would be better served for your money if you wait for the SE.
I recommend this game!

First, you should know that this is more of an adventure game; I did not encounter any HOS.
Second, I played the trial version, so maybe they show up later than I played. (I didn't finish the trial.)
The puzzles were easy. The game play was tedious. It was very obvious what was needed and easy to obtain the objects. There was no challenge at all.
If you are a beginner, this would be a good game. Other than that, I can't recommend it.
I don't recommend this game.

I only played the trial version of the game and I'm very glad I didn't buy it.
First, the story is nothing like the Hansel and Gretel you know, except for the fact there's a witch and two children with the names Hansel and Gretel.
You walk around within a few screens for each "goal" and while the goals are very clear, they are also easy to find and do. The "adventure" part is extremely boring. The plot line doesn't move forward at all. If you like simple, though, you do not every have to go back and forth more than a few screens; there is no map and you really don't need one.
All of the graphics are dark and it is very hard to see anything.
The HOS are your standard junk lists; they, too, are hard to see.
The few puzzles I came across are extremely easy.
All in all, this is a very static game, with very little interaction with anyone/anything.
And did I mention the screens are too dark?
Anyway... save your money. Even if you are a beginner, this will be a waste of your money.
I don't recommend this game.

I noticed right away that this game was easier than most.
Hence the you should be good if you are a beginner.
The simplicity got to be really annoying after awhile. By the end I really disliked this game. I only finished because I wanted to see the ending.
The puzzles were familiar but seriously toned down. For example (SPOILER) jigsaw puzzles that had to be put together were only 5 pieces and there was no rotation. It continues this way throughout the game.
I used the match-3 option instead of the HOS for most of the game, and that was easy... no strange shapes, no (generally) double times to get rid of a square, etc.
The HOS were simple, easy to see both lists and silhouettes.
Also, not much was done with the storyline. It was a good thought, but it was not followed through.
The screens are beautiful, though.
I don't recommend this game.

But it was very short. It took me under 3 hours to complete.
Makes me glad I didn't buy the CE.

I am almost done with the game.
I would have scored the game higher if not for the extreme frustration with the both the annoyance of unasked for comments/advice and the completely unhelpful asked for hints by the animal helper.
It totally drained any fun I had with the game.
Just because of this problem/frustration, I cannot recommend the game.
