I have always thoroughly enjoyed the DP games. This edition
almost fits the bill. For me the story line is somewhat lacking as I just did not fully get into the saga of the Salt Princess and her sisters. Other than that this DP tale is as satisfying as the rest of the fantasies in the series.
As usual the game is nicely drawn. The fractured HO segments are again superb with the finished product in each section being exquisite. Salt Princess has much more exploration needed than most of the other Parables, thus lots of to and fro. A plethora of items are necessarily taken up to be used in various locations. As is always the case in these games, cursed items are there to be found as well as parts of a number of parables that delineate the story. During the demo there are not too many puzzles but they all have some degree of challenge. On a 1 to 10 scale in comparison to all the Dark Parables, I give this one a 7.5. Fans of the series should generally find this chapter appealing. Those players not familiar with the DP stories owe it to themselves to look up this game and most assuredly its predecessors.
As an aside, I have come to the conclusion there are not a lot of 5 star games being offered given the available rating system offered by BFG. With thousands of games in all genres, many hundreds of hidden object games, and that there are too many so-called " new games every day " that are not at all new I cannot fathom why there are so many 5 star ratings. My intention is not to be critical of reviewers who grant 5 stars but merely to point out that for me there are not enough positive factors for me to say I love any given game.
I have long held the belief that offering a new game every day has become a bit of a detriment since there is a total lack of originality in most offerings. The last " new " game was the brilliant and challenging K3Y of a few weeks ago. As good as that game is, unfortunately it contains a glitch that prevented players to advance beyond level 30 and no fix has been offered to date.
As a wrap up, try this new DP. It satisfies on lots of levels, just not on all levels.
I recommend this game!

Fantasy Mosaics after 26 editions was becoming stale. There was improvement some time back when new and more interesting colors were added. The one aspect of game 27 that is novel is sometimes restricting the player from accessing one or more new colors in a particular grid until at least one given color is completed. Other than that it's the same old same old.
Of late I personally only acquire a new FM game if I have a free game code about to expire ( still cannot figure out why BFG uses a 2 month limit on the free codes ) and I can't find any other game to be worthwhile. I own way too many FM's already.
To be fair, Fantasy Mosaics are still the best produced in this genre
I recommend this game!

I frequently am asked to provide beta testing for proposed new games and Riddles of Light is an example thereof. My assessment of the beta was the game lacked any originality,
the game offered little challenge and the look of the game generated no compunction to arouse enthusiasm. The actual issued game is as poor as the beta.
Here we have a couple of archeologists ( Lila and Maya )
who seek and find a gauntlet that empowers the wearer with abilities to neutralize the minions of Seth, he's the bad guy in this game, and I guess ultimately defeat Seth himself.
So we get another game with a destructive god creature wreaking havoc on in this case Egypt.
Maya as archeologist must do lots of digging in her work yet she manages to have perfectly manicured finger nails.
We meet a character along the way dressed in a gown worthy of an Oscar presenter, surprising given she is in a country where women are usually covered head to toe.
These are examples of developers not doing their homework.
As to clichés there are lots of them in gameplay. We must feed a banana to a monkey so it will release a flute needed to quiet a cobra. A couple of keys had to be found to open locks in the first 10 minutes of the demo. We yet again needed to smoke out bees, find a jug to acquire water, find a mirror to assist in opening another door, etc., etc., etc.
During gameplay I found but one interesting HO segment and not one challenging puzzle. There are stars to collect and morphs within HO sections.
When game developers routinely adapt themselves to returning to very old hat themes it makes their job so much easier. Unfortunately it results in a boring game, one seen too many times.. I cannot wait for some game maker to give us something NEW. In the meantime game players such as myself do get to save our money since there is nothing here worth buying.
I don't recommend this game.

I certainly do not remember Lost Grimoires 1 so needless to say it had no wow factor for me. Episode 2 has good and bad points. The best aspect of the game is how beautifully it is drawn. An excellent example is a silhouetted HO scene requiring locating a bunch of birds. I am a birder and these are incredibly realistic so kudos to the folks at Artifex Mundi for a great depiction. The worst aspect is the incredible ease ( at least in the demo ) to complete HO and puzzle segments.
As to the story it is a rehash of so many of its ilk. Here a young man Fern inherits his fathers throne and just before his coronation the evil Drosera has regained her powers of witchcraft and is set to wreak havoc on the kingdom. Been there done that way too many times.
I won't go into too much more detail as others will invariably do so. Also there isn't that much to tell. This is a fine game for beginners to the HOPA genre and it's a game that should appeal to youngsters.
We have been supplied with 3 fantasy games in a row. Perhaps a change of venue is needed. For me a purchase of the CE is out of the question simply because there is no challenge within the game. There is not enough bang for the buck. I'd consider using a free game code at some point.
My recommendation is based on the way Shard of Mystery looks rather than how it plays.
I recommend this game!

I find it so much harder to grant 5 stars in games offered recently since most games are rehashes both in story line and in game play of countless offerings that have preceded the so-called new game of the day.
Canvases of Time comes close ( it's more likely a 4.5 star game ) but there are aspects within that prevent me from rating this a top-notch game.
The story has been told thousands of times. There are parallel worlds, one of humans and another fairy tale beings. Lines cannot be crossed otherwise devastation is in the offing. The heroine in the game is the guardian tasked with keeping separation between the realms.
Strange and sinister occurrences are befalling Earth so the guardian via a portal crosses to the other side where she meets the ruler who explains that an evil being ( turns out to be a dude named Solas ) is bent on destroying both realms.
What is the point in doing so? If both worlds are gone, what happens to Solas? Isn't he gone forever too? This is the sticky part of the story. I realize this is a fantasy game yet this element in the story leaves a major question unanswered.
Game play is routine as HOPA goes, a few of the HO sections and puzzles do offer a bit of challenge while none in the demo are overwhelmingly difficult. I do admire how the game is drawn and some of the creatures in the fairy world look cool. Glass prisms are there for those interested in collectibles.
I admit I am often taken by the fantasy games with my favorite series being the Dark Parables with the Awakenings coming in at a close second. I think Canvases is an installment of Forgotten Fairy Tales however none of the prior offerings are entrenched in my memory banks.
For me the CE presented today is not an option. Perhaps the SE in a few weeks time will be. I feel Canvases is a game that other players will either love or hate. I am in the strongly like camp.
I recommend this game!

I was a beta tester for this game and it was quite a few months ago so I do not recall much of what occurred in that test. I can only surmise that Eipix either did some improvements with the Golden Secret or just waited all this time for the general release because Eipix has so many irons in the fire.
The story is typical of all HE episodes with the detective being tasked to find an artifact or to contact someone. In this case the golden wheel is key to what will happen. The detective buys it at auction only to have it stolen when the detective is mugged. The villain of the piece is named Hillebrant and why he wants the wheel is not very obvious during the demo. I liked this part of the story since it makes me want to continue. I also enjoyed that ( unlike most HE tales ) that there is not a supposed "helper " who turns out to be one of the bad guys, at least not in the demo.
As is always the case this HE is well drawn and I always enjoy finding the fact cards that enhance the background info
relevant to the story.
The HO segments and puzzles are typical HOPA fare and there are compasses to collect.
Golden Secret in an improvement over some of the more recent installments in the series yet HE in general could use an overhaul because all of them are basically the same.
Since the earlier HEs are still better than this one I will not endorse the CE although I will recommend the game for purposes of the review process. Players unfamiliar with the series are better served by going back to the initial 3 or 4 in the series.
Personally I can find myself waiting for the SE or using a free game code should I find that one is due to expire ( still cannot fathom why BFG has a 2 month time limit on game codes ) Of late I still end up saving $$$ and replaying excellent games in my repertoire.
I recommend this game!

After the demo of K3Y I am reminded of a couple of games that came out a few years ago and those were the Peggles.
This is of the pachinko variety wherein balls of a particular color must be dropped and touch rings of the same color. When 3 balls touch each other they disappear from the grid in the same way that Bubble Bounce games occur. So I guess the player is given 2 games in one. There are black balls with keys in them that must be struck so they land on a bottom plate. When all keys are amassed and the colored balls removed the keys open a gate to another segment of the same grid or the game progresses to the next sequence.
As the game continues the difficulty increases and there are obstacles inserted.
The instructions for the game are somewhat vague; however I did not really get into looking for them. I played till the demo ended and was on the 10th grid. This is a better game than I thought it would be so I will probably use a free game code to acquire it. What is most appealing is that it's different than the usual offerings of HOPA, Match 3, TM's etc.
I recommend this game!

Many reviewers have lamented the fact that lots of series have suffered recently. My thought is that developers churn them out too quickly, resulting in less imaginative stories.
Phantasmat has been lessened overall by this decision.
Fortunately Eipix has applied a patch in Curse of the Mist and this is a sigh of hope for the series to return to its often lofty heights.
While the story itself is nothing new ( a camping trip is interrupted by a spooky event and another girl is abducted as a result ) I liked that not much information is divulged during the demo. Evidently there is a fog endemic to the area that is causing the strange goings on. We have the kidnapper citing more deaths and more burials. Yet we know not why. So I am interested in continuing based on the story alone.
I find this edition to be very well drawn and characters appear life-like. The HO segments are appealing with one in particular finding shapes within a dream catcher scene is really fine. A couple of the puzzles require thought but are all doable. As is the case with most CE's there are collections and morphs.
I will not purchase the CE myself since this is not a 5 star game IMO. Perhaps the SE later on or a free game code use
might entice me. Being the owner of hundreds of these HOPA
finds me replaying games I can go back to over and over.
Recently I went back to most of the Dark Parables which continues to shine with every new game Blue Tea issues.
Curse of the Mist is good.....just not great
I recommend this game!

When we go back to the initial group of Dark Tales, the games were all compelling. Unfortunately the series , like so many others, took a downward turn. Morella I am pleased to say reverses the trend and provides the Dark Tales with a newfound light.
Rufus MCDougall seeks the aid of Monsieur Dupin ( that's pronounced DOO-PEH and not DEW-PIN.....a developer inaccuracy ) and the player to rescue his nephew Mark, his wife and their adopted daughter Lilly from what is best described as a well-known house of horrors. Gee, if that's the case why move into the house at all?
An extremely evil entity called Morella has subjucated Lilly as her unwitting accomplice in maintaining the house as an extremely insidious dwelling.
This is not the first time a child has been made a villain in the story but this particular tale has its strong points. What drags the game down a bit are the too easy HO segments and puzzles. There is nary one challenger during the demo and this causes the drop to 4 star status. On the plus side a couple of the puzzles are somewhat inventive. I also liked the player becomes the monster at demo's end though I am sure this is a temporary affliction.
Morella does not compel me at all to acquire the CE version even with today's 1/2 price sale. This is another game wherein I did not notice morphs and/or collectibles. If I can't find them I don't want them yet I am sure they are there.
For me the game is a really good SE type so I can wait a few weeks for that version. Overall I am pleased this Dark Tale is a cut above those seen most recently.
I recommend this game!

Last week we were given the 2nd installment of Saga of the 9 Worlds which is outstanding due to its very compelling story line. Dark City London also has a terrific story but the game falls short IMO of being a 5 star offering because the graphics aren't great, the game play itself is too easy and the typos ( e.g. asking for a chair rather than a chain in an HO , spelling Cooper as Copper, etc. ) are distracting.
While the story lacks originality it is an easy " book " to read.
We have a clockmaker whose son is killed and he himself beheaded during construction of purportedly the Tower of London. So said clockmaker seeks revenge on those responsible for his personal tragedy.
The best part of the gameplay are the deductions required of the detective to make progress during his pursuit of the evildoer. Unfortunately some of these deductions are given piecemeal to the player rather than forcing the player to do the solving himself.
Some of the HO segments and puzzles are clever however there is no ground breaking within them. There are collectible cards and morphs for those who revel in these extras.
This is a game that I might acquire when the SE version becomes available as there is not enough meat on these bones to warrant paying the higher priced CE.
I recommend this game!
