I REALLY wanted to love this true adventure game. The old games are so much better than the "adventure" games that are really HOPs with stories and lots of handholding.
However, there was no way for me to play.
I play all my games on a laptop with a touchscreen and a mousepad. I'm used to having to sometimes use just the mousepad or odd combinations, but when I picked something out of inventory, I couldn't put it back, or even replace it with something else. So disappointing ...
Maybe it would work on a desktop with a physical mouse?
I don't recommend this game.

I downloaded the trial version. First it crashed in the middle of the tutorial. Next attempt, I can't play the tutorial, and it crashes after a few minutes of play. (Windows 10, tablet)
i used to buy every new release of this series, but starting with #33, the game no longer accepts my pen equivalent of a right click. I purchased release 33 and eventually completed ever level, but it's no longer worth the effort . :(
Based on Trial I was intrigued by the setting and found the story line interesting, but was really frustrated by the HOPs. Some of the items were teensy-tiny, others had confusing names. For instance, you're looking in a box of with lots of metal objects and are asked to find a metal pipe -- there are about 6 candidates -- and a "metal plate" which turned out to be a sign. There is no alternative game or skip option. If you start clicking randomly (did I say I got frustrated?!), previously found items become unfound. I had to resort to using the parrot/hinter repeatedly.
Based on the demo. Once you get into the game, you collect clues to the murder, but you can't look at them until you remove the bookshelves from the wall. Why? (Why not spread them on the floor or on a table?) And why remove clues from a crime scene? I'm going to be sent to jail for interfering with a police investigation! But accept this as the premise for the game and move on... However, the inventory could only be scrolled with an arrow on the far left. And when you get stuck, the hints aren't very helpful. As with the bookshelves, the hint was to look at the clues in my pack that I couldn't look at because I hadn't yet pinned them to the wall! For me not worth struggling through the rest of the game.
Based on demo only I have played several of Joe's clutter games. They offer several unique approaches to item matching with additional puzzles added in. (My personal favorites in earlier games were the various picture puzzles, which I didn't have time to try.)
I especially liked the new feature that if you run out of time, you can elect to continue anyway rather than start over from the beginning. In earlier games, I turned off the timer.
However, I am not purchasing the game because this version doesn't work with a tablet pen (as mentioned by another reviewer), which makes it almost unplayable for me as I don't have a mouse. I can highly recommend the prior game, Clutter VI: Leigh's story.
This is the best puzzle game I've played in a LONG time. The complexity increases gradually, requiring you to think further and further ahead. And do you try to trigger the unlocks or avoid them? I got many levels fairly quickly, but struggled on others.
The puzzles are elegant, the music and sound effects are beautiful.
The interface had a few problems for me.. - To exit the game, use the "Esc" key - To restart a level you have to either back out repeatedly or leave and restart. I would have liked a "restart level" option. - After completing 4-5 puzzles, you get access to a "Grandpa's Secret" puzzle, but to play it you have to exit the game play and to back to the menu to select it.
The (entirely optional) story line I found confusing. During gameplay you occasionally get a souvenir. You go to the home table and open the drawer (at the bottom of the screen) to get the story elements. For much of the game, you are the grandchild remembering your Grandpa and his wife, Amelia (not your grandma?) Then suddenly you are the grandfather with dementia trying to understand what has happened with your life. The descriptions are almost poetic..
I recommend this game!

Why is this classified as a "Puzzle"? This is a real adventure game, not a puzzle. And these are my two favorite genres. (Note: Most games on this site classified as "Adventure" are really "Hidden Object" games. Often well done with interesting story lines and worth playing, but still you have to look for strange objects among clutter that have nothing to do with the story line in order to advance.)
In this game there are NO = ZERO = NONE = 0 HOS (hidden object scene) challenges!
Just a fascinating story and the challenge of finding tools you need to use to complete the story line.
Unusual? YES Different? YES Difficult? at times, YES
Did I ever get stuck enough to look for clues? YES (in Scene 11) (Did I find any hints? NO -- My hint: Look at ALL the dead bodies until you find what you need to use.)
If this is the type of game you'd like to play, you should try this game.
I so, so wanted to give this 4-5 stars ... The game play is a little uneven, as if done by different sets of game builders.
It starts out more like a serial room escape game, but one where a bad choice can require you to start the current room over again. There was one scene where you're trying not to drown -- on the second time through I was able to complete the task. Definitely 5*
Once you get out of the maze an into the town, it becomes more like a standard hidden object adventure. A good story, and interesting challenges. 4-5*
However, the bonus chapter is, at least for me, unplayable after the first few minutes. The in-game guide is no help. The game forum people described what you have to do, but I couldn't get it to work. You have to open a desk cabinet, then QUICKLY drag a back-scratcher to the right place and double-click. Some people got it in 2-3 attempts. I tried about 10 times before giving up. Often the door would close before I could even pick up the back-scratcher (Oh, and definitely lock your inventory open to even have a chance!# You can't skip the challenge so if you can't do it, you can't get any further into the game. 0* on a scale of 1-5 #actually, negative stars if I could! What is the point of this exercise?
Conditional recommendation: If you like room-escape type games, I would recommend getting the game when you can get it at a REALLY good discount. It's a waste of money to pay full price when you can't complete the game.)
I found the story premise interesting and enjoyed the puzzles. I bought the game after trying it out and looked forward to completing the journey. You build gateways to other worlds and find gateways back. However, I went through one gate and was totally stuck. When I checked the strategy guide, I discovered there's an item I needed to pick up in the prior world in order to advance. It's not possible to go back, and not possible to go forwards. All I can do at this point is start over or give up.
