I actually really liked this game. I like when there is dialogue, and the puzzles are nice. It is a FROG, and I normally don't care for those, but this was ok.
So all in all I was pleased - but then came the ending... It just seemed smacked together, and at that point the story didn't really make that much sense. But it is just at the very end, so there is much nice gameplay to go through before that point.
Still I have to lower my grade for the experience on that account.
I recommend this game!

My review is based on the whole game. I have played it through first in Story mode and then in Find All mode.
I really enjoyed this game, so much that I searched hard for a sequel - but no luck. Now they have just released a second installment, so I'm definatly getting that.
The theme is classic. Two cops in a newly started department for sensitive cases. They (of course) have a very different approach to being a cop, and have to learn to work together. There is a lot of story to this game, which I love. Most of it is written, but some is done with voiceover. The cutscenes are drawn and fit really well with the atmosphere, The "theme music" is amazing, a woman singing mournfully, but it can become a bit monotonous over time. Luckily they change the soundtrack after a few minuttes, so you don't go nuts. It's on a loop.
The HOS are really nice and very varied. From luxury apartments to darkest slum. I don't think I've ever seen such dirty places, but I guess they could exist i New York :-)
People who find that there are too many HOS should remember that this IS a HOG, not adventure, and should have gotten another game.
Yes, there are some hard to find objects, but if it gets too frustrating there is a hint that recharges. I personally like the challenge, but must admit I used some hints in this game.
All in all a great game. Not in the topmost league, therefore only four stars in overall, but really great none the less.
I recommend this game!

And I mean really really love it. I'm actually so addicted to it the time just vanishes when I start to play - not a totally good thing, as I actually supposed to write University reports... :-)
I like Royal Envoy and Roads of Rome, and if you do too, there is a very good chance that you will love this game also.
Do try it.
I prefer this game to the other in the series, much like with RoR, they got it right the first time. I still buy the others (as I said, addicted), but number one is the best.

I have played the other Rainbow Web games, dismissing this because of the bad review score - and the really bad graphics meeting you when you open the game.
But when I finally gave it a shot, I found out I really like it!
I'm in the middle of playing Rainbow Web III now, but to my surprise I find the gameplay better in Rainbow Web I. It is much more of a brainbender, especially since there is no power-ups (I always find them to be a bit like cheating anyway) AND a timer!! Jubii
I don't get why people don't like timers, IMO it's much better with the challange.
In RW III there are no timer and a hammer to remove pieces. So sad. They could at least give us who wants it the opportunity to have a hard time ;-) In RW I there is no easy way out.
Not that this is an extremely hard game, don't worry, especially the first many level go by in a breeze. Later on you will probably be a bit pressed for time or run out, but you have 3 lives to get you through.
I really recommend this game to people who want a bit of a brain challenge.
The bad things: the graphics. As mentioned above, they are really oldfashioned. Also, unlike the other games in the series, you don't get to choose what to set free from the spiders spell. I miss that a bit, it's always nice to use the points you earn to something - an incentive to get more points.
But still, it's really a nice little game.
I recommend this game!

I had planned to buy "Fiction Fixers: The Curse of Oz" now it was a DD, but luckily I played the trial first...
Not that it is a bad game, it is just way to easy for me. Although I'm normally a really really slow player, I played through a good deal more than half of the available map in the one hour trial.
That's why it would be a really good beginners game! There is a nice introduction as to how to play the game, that you can't skip. I always play on a hard level without handholding, but in this game there is no escape.
You play through the storyline from the original book, of course with the addition of Victor Vile.
You find fragmented objects to use on your way along the Yellow Brick Road. They are always in your current scene and just a couple of the ones you've just been through, so there is not too much running back and forth.
There are also hidden object scenes scattered about. These are really really easy clutter scenes, though I must admit it gets closer to the normal challenge level later in the game.
There are some minigames but not many. They are the usual, like lighting lamps in the right order.
They had something new though. As you meet the characters from the book and they join you, they will add skills you can use. That's a nice idea from the developers :-) Almost like in the oldtime RPGs.
I would say that if you are an experienced player then don't buy this, not even if you like Oz.
If you are a beginner and you find the idea of going into the story from the book (and I guess you are, or you wouldn't be reading this :-) then go right ahead! It will give you a very good introduction both to FROGs and HOGs
I recommend this game!

At first I thought it was a really fantastic game. It has so much atmosphere and is so spooky I immediately get in the right mood. I was sure I would buy it in the first 10 minutes of the game…
But! There are sparkles all over, you can’t get rid of them, I find that annoying. They are not even really helpful, as they just continue sparkling even after you’ve been there.
Another thing is that you right away get a list of thing you need upon entering a new room. I like to find the trouble spots myself, or even not finding them, but just roam.
No such thing here.
The HOGs are ok, there just doesn't seem to be much logic in where to find things. Like a thing is hidden under a rock, but in the list it is not in a specifik colour etc.
Anyway, the story seems great, I just couldn’t stick with it – I simply got too annoyed over the little things.
I don't recommend this game.
