It seems that good games, released as Standard Editions, are few and far between. It gets harder and harder to find a fresh game to spend those free game coupons on. Fallen: The Flowers of Evil is a bargain, even if you are between coupons! Most of the game is beautifully illustrated. There are badly animated cutscenes, but once you get past them, this is a fine game with a lot to offer. The gameplay, although strictly old school, is thoroughly satisfying. There is a lot of backtracking but the areas are not large enough to cause confusion. The hidden object scenes are straightforward and fair. There are no interactive objects, but I thought they were cleverly highlighted and revealed. And, there are a lot of objects to find and use and these interact in very interesting ways. There is a map available but I didn't have to rely on it. Most tasks are within a few scenes of each other and I never felt at loose ends with an overwhelming inventory. Fun Factor ranks highest in my book and this game is Five Star Fun!
Despite a few flaws, I though this was a fine game and I had a great time playing it. The animations are a little blurry but the static scenes are clear and very beautiful. A few items are poorly described in some of the hidden object scenes, especially near the end of the game. You have to advance the story by clicking on a dialog box and the music is overly melodramatic in places. However, there is a great variety of puzzles driving a terrific story and that made this game well worth the price of admission! Most puzzles require you to find pieces to open them, either by exploring scenes or earning them in hidden object scenes. I loved that! There is a nice variety of well developed locations and characters. Loved that too! So maybe it was a little rough around the edges but I had a great ride and I hope you do too!
This is a solid four star game with five star graphics. It loads rather slowly throughout, but I loved the scenery, the ghostly manifestations and the special effects within the scenes. What I didn't like was the confusing and overly difficult gameplay in the hidden object scenes. They start off being fun but there are always a few impossible to find items. Please, even with a hint, some of the items blended into the background or were partially obscured to the point of frustration. Luckily the hint bar refills quickly. The other problem I had was some of the tool to task relationships didn't make a whole lot of sense. It was frustrating to have what seemed to be a perfectly suitable object and have it bounce back into inventory. Even more irritating was finding that I was using the right tool but hadn't applied it in the exact area to activate a response. I thought the look of the game was terrific and I liked both the music and the voice overs. The puzzles for the most part are good solid fun and a few were really innovative. There are lost souls to find, hidden in the background, and other achievements to collect. The bonus chapter tacks on a few new scenes and additional characters but is really just an abbreviated rerun of the original plot. The Collector's edition provided a guide to solve most problems for me but I usually sail through games without having to rely on one. Happy haunting!
A new breed of virus has spread throughout the City of Oxford. You must search the city for a missing girl who holds the key to stopping the global epidemic!
Wow! Not only did I find the gameplay innovative and entertaining, but the story, from the opening scene to the dramatic conclusion, kept me on the edge of my seat! Although the theme is dark, a town destroyed by a deadly virus, you are not fumbling around in badly lit environments. The enhanced photographs and film clips create a mysterious and gritty atmosphere without sacrificing clarity. The live actors in the cutscenes are perfectly cast and the voice acting is terrific. In addition there are clever animations throughout, with effective sound effects and haunting music. In the hidden object scenes, a few key items must be located first, then you use them to interact and uncover other objects. That was a lot of fun! You are rewarded with various tools for completing hidden object scenes and there are plenty of useful items hidden in plain sight. Solving puzzles open up new areas to explore and add to your growing inventory and yet I never felt overburdened. Backtracking is minimal and if you have doubts about the next step the hint function in casual mode is very helpful. A journal not only records useful clues but provides insight and information relevant to the story, so open it often! I happened to buy the Collector's version of this game. The bonus chapter is a prequel. I enjoyed the backstory but it seemed less challenging than the main game. I would say if you are on a budget and can't wait for the next CE sale, jump on this train today and enjoy the ride!
This is a long game so if you are looking to get your money's worth, Rite of Passage IS The Pefect Show! Gameplay is varied and interesting throughout. Hidden object scenes are a delight, beautifully drawn with clever, entertaining extras. There are quite a few environments to explore and plenty to do. I did feel the story line gets lost along the way but eventually it comes back for a satisfying conclusion. I enjoyed playing the bonus chapter which actually has a more logical story and goal than the main game. I thought the music was annoying at times, particularly a tinny little arcade tune that plays when a task is completed, but the voiceovers and other sound effects were great. I hope you have as much fun as I did playing this one!
I really enjoyed this game but I found the "prequel" bonus chapter anticlimactic. However, the main part of the game is delightful and I enjoyed the canine theme. Even if you don't love dogs, Pippa will melt your heart and send you racing to the rescue. The hidden object scenes are only moderately challenging but are lovely and have clever interactive features. There is a good variety of puzzles and they all apply to the advancement of the plot, opening new areas to explore or gifting you with inventory items. While deserving of the rave reviews this game has received, I was puzzled that no one else seemed disappointed with the bonus chapter. It does have some pretty nifty extra features but as a prequel to the story, I found in lacking the heart the main game has.
The moral of this story is: Let sleeping demons lie! But of course no one ever does and it's up to you to rescue the damsel in distress. This game has a supernatural story which is told through letters and notes left scattered about. These and other clues are added to your journal as you explore the manor and grounds. You earn useful inventory items by solving hidden object scenes and puzzles. Awards given for exceptional gameplay and announced by pop ups. The game is slow to load from one scene to the next and moving between areas to accomplish tasks or revisit a hidden object scene for a second search requires a little patience. On the other hand, scenes will suddenly burst with drama. You are being watched as you get closer to solving the Mystery of the Ancients, so beware!
In a fading world devoid of color, the ghost of Nikola Tesla reaches through the Ether and invites you on an incredible adventure through time and space.
If you know a scientist you better keep the plot to yourself, but Tesla's Tower: The Wardenclyffe Mystery is a weird, wacky and thoroughly enjoyable game. I thought the graphics were terrific and enjoyed having Tesla guiding my tour. My character had a voice as well which I found refreshing. There are a lot of animated scenes and some were quite unexpected, adding to the fun! In the beginning I seemed to be picking up a lot of random items but eventually it all came together. The hidden object scenes are clear and nicely drawn. I had trouble with a few of the puzzles, even after reading the instructions, but I was able to solve most of them eventually. They can be skipped before you get too frustrated but I am a glutton for punishment. A task list makes it pretty clear what to do or where to go next and hints are available if you draw a blank. The music is bouncy and the sound effects are electrifying! I had a great time and hope you do too!
I loved the previous PuppetShow games and have replayed them several times but for me this chapter fell short. As a pure hidden object game there is a lot to like about Return to Joyville. The scenes are beautifully drawn and have some entertaining and interesting gameplay to keep things fresh, even on your return visits. The downside is there are simply too many of them. Any sense of anticipation or discovery is blunted by the slow pace of the game. Enter an abandoned theatre and behind every door is....a hidden object scene! Solve a puzzle and unlock...a hidden object scene! By the time you finally get around to using your inventory the one item you need will be missing and you have to go in search of...another hidden object scene! The plot is simple, stop a fire and change the fate of the evil Felicia, our arch enemy from previous PuppetShow installments. You know what? I liked the evil Felicia much better than the beautiful goody two shoes I encountered in this game. We are supplied with a new villain, but he was hardly worth my time. After the main game ended there was more silliness in the Collector's Edition bonus chapter. Okay, so I am a glutton for punishment and despite my raving I did enjoy this game. It didn't keep me awake at night like the previous games in the series but I did find a little joy back home once again in Joyville. Hope you do too!
Mystery Trackers: Black Isle doesn't take itself too seriously and although it does have a few lapses in logic, I think that's what makes it so much fun! It blunders along with over the top acting, cheap thrills and sloppy artwork and gets away with it! The highlights for me were the hidden object scenes. They are messy but filled with clever challenges including puzzles within the scenes and the use of previously acquired objects that you bring in from your inventory bar. Other inventory items stay with you and are used in unexpected and innovative ways. I especially loved my four legged shovel. I enjoyed all the puzzles and some were wildly creative. Instructions are supplied so I wasn't floundering trying to figure out the mechanics. There is a helpful map that shows areas of interest and will even bounce you to different locations if you get tired of backtracking. And you do cover the miles in this game! I snagged the Collector's Edition and although I never needed the strategy guide, I did use hints to smooth a path through the game. There are achievements to earn, each funnier than the last, and 50 owls to find. The bonus chapter is a nice extra and an interesting twist on the story. I had a ball playing this game and I hope you do too!
