This review is based upon playing the demo.
Many have written reviews outlining the features of the game so I won't repeat. Briefly, it has:
Very well drawn art, fun to look at
OK musical themes, (but oh! SO dramatic I found it distracting)
Pretty easy puzzles and HOPs
All the CE bells and whistles
A good jump map that give you a gateway to where there is something to do
Nonetheless, I was left wanting more. I was definitely not sucked into the world. I know I will play this game someday and will probably enjoy it, but not as much as everyone else apparently did.
(BTW, Volkswagen Beetles have an engine in the back, not a trunk. Maybe that didn't help.)
Try it. Maybe you will love it as much as most of the other reviewers. I just cannot put my finger on why I don't.
I recommend this game!

I just belatedly found this game by searching for other games like Patchworks.
These games are really fun for me. And this one is even better than the newest, Aiice Patchworks, because the timer can, in fact, be beaten on some of the puzzles, a problem with the Alice version.
The only problem is that dragging and hovering with the mouse makes my old elbow hurt. So I guess that means this game lasts longer for me because I can't play it all at once. This is a good thing, yes?
I recommend this game!

I write to advise whether to buy the CE or the SE, that being what I want to know when both are out and I have bought neither.
I played the demo of the CE. Nice game:
=The art is beautiful
=The little musical themes are pretty, though sometimes they cut off abruptly. There was one during the suitcase HOP that I particularly liked.
=The puzzles are fun, HOPs average
=There are morphing objects that CE reviewers seemed to like, and tarot cards, and achievements, though I'm not interested in those so I cannot evaluate them for you.
But
=Reviewers of the CE seemed to think it was short
=I'm not too clear why this detective can solve a magical eclipse with monsters, and I guess that's why I didn’t truly get sucked in to the game
=People talked an awful lot and then stood around and didn’t leave
=Though there is a "secret room" and I don't know what's in there, It doesn’t appear have all the bells and whistles for a CE because there’s no ability to play puzzles and HOP’s over
Being short and lack of replayable puzzles makes this is a good candidate for the SE rather than the CE. Also, it did not make me lose track of time because I was not that immersed in the world.
I think you will have enough fun to buy one or the other, though. Try it and see.
I recommend this game!

This game works well, but otherwise, "Eh."
Features include:
--The ability to change the pieces from being absolutely regular, but not nearly enough.
--The ability to change the number of pieces.
I am unsure why this developer has not supplied prettier pictures. There are even a lot of pictures of people, which does not strike me as a usual jigsaw feature. I am not really interested in doing jigsaw puzzles of people, much less people I don't know.
This developer did include lots of pretty pictures in the Easter holiday version of this game. So I am unsure of the problem here. I even bought the Easter version for the pictures, though the game and its options are not nearly as good as Jigsaws Galore, also available from Big Fish games.
Go buy Jigsaws Galore and import your own Thanksgiving pictures. Very cool!

It's a pretty game with optional levels, but it is always the timed mode first. Even with the relaxed button selected, I'm still in a hurry.
Perhaps for those of you who like to beat the clock, it will be great, but I am not an adrenaline junkie, so I will pass.
If the # of moves mode were first and the timed mode the optional one, I'd be buying for sure. But I buy these games to relax.
I'm not recommending the game for me, because I am not buying, but try it and see what you think.
I recommend this game!

The puzzles here are hard to do in the time allotted. It's hard to see how anyone can get three stars on most of them unless you memorize them and do a speed drill. Not fun.
Maybe an easier setting would be appropriate?
But if you put that aside, this game is colorful and fun, almost as great as the original. I highly recommend it.
Buying it now.
I recommend this game!

I try to advise whether to buy the SE or the CE after the SE is out, because if I have bought neither, that's what I want to know. I finally bought the CE last weekend on the 2-for-1 sale, but I still rate the game low for being nonsensical. I have played little more than the demo and I hope it gets better, but I am not counting on it.
The pros here are, admittedly, many:
--It's well drawn
--The music is good
--The puzzles are interesting
--The CE has all the bells and whistles
The downfall of this game is the lack of logic:
--I am suspected of something by the police, and a police detective says not to leave town.
--But then after the police detective interview is over, I can't leave the police dept because it might interrupt someone's conversation?? Come on. Say "excuse me" and walk through to the door.
--When I cannot leave, I am directed by the arrows of the game to go back into the police detective's office even though he is not in there, where I am allowed to poke around on my own, fiddling, for example, with a cassette player found on the detective's desk. Not sensible.
--Then, after I finally make it out of the police dept, I am trapped in the police department courtyard. (Even the game character comments on how strange that is.)
--And THEN I am directed to go back inside to the detective's office again to get something else. He's still not in there.
Generally, I do not care too much about story, but this one is so nonsensical it makes it hard to play. Games just aren't as much fun when you can't figure out why you are doing things.
So if you like the game despite the logical inconsistencies, I recommend the CE because it has all the good stuff. But if you don't, you might wait for the SE on a daily deal because it is a beautifully drawn game--one of my favorite things about these games. Even though I cannot recommend it as a game, I am admiring it as art. Be prepared to use the hint a lot while you are admiring, though.
I don't recommend this game.

Sunnyglow has written a great review of the CE that gives all the details, so I will just discuss whether you should buy the CE or the SE because that is what I want to know if both are out and I have bought neither.
This review is based upon playing the first two chapters of the CE,
Which to buy will depend somewhat on your feelings about the game. Some people graded the CE really low because, yes, the game is definitely not logical. Just a few examples:
--I thought the heroine was going back in time to find out who killed the two people, but it turns out now she is going to change the last 20 years by saving the people.
--How can the people at the campfire not notice our character, who keeps returning and sneaking around their campsite, particularly after our character stole their bicycle?
--I laughed when I read Closar's 1-star review for the CE, noting that it was 40 kilometers to a town you ride back and forth to, several times in one night, on that stolen bicycle. I was having so much fun I hadn't noticed. But it didn't change my 5-star rating.
I have been having so much fun with the game I don't even care about how illogical it is. Plus, the game also has:
—Really great, clear art, (except for one room that is dim around the edges, but then it turns out you don’t need to see around the edges to complete the HOP in that room anyway, so yay!)
—Fun HOPs (but I am not a HOP lover, so take that into consideration. They must be REALLY good for me to like them.)
—Varied mini puzzles that are sometimes tedious and sometimes really fun.
—A good map function that allows you to jump to a scene. Without that, there would too much back and forth.
The CE has all the bells and whistles according to BFG, though this is not apparent from the Extras Menu. Apparently, you can "Unlock the Secret Room to replay your favorite hidden-object puzzles and mini-games!” according to BFG’s description. Replaying great puzzles later is my favorite thing, and there are some good ones here.
I bought the CE and I do not regret it. Try it and see if you agree. Or at least buy this game, the SE, because your destiny is to have fun with this one.
I recommend this game!

This just came out for the Mac on Halloween! Seems to work fine on the new platform.
Great game
The art is beautiful and brightly colored, and is believable that way because the hero is an artist, and the game involves the surprising (to him) magical aspects of that art. Although a bit cartoonish, the art is fun to look at. It is also different from most other games.
The music I found annoying and had to turn off. But when I turned it back on later to see if it changed when I changed scenes, there really wasn’t any. So you will have to decide for yourself. The ability to get the music from the extras menu is not a selling point for me, however.
The minigames are fun. I am having a great time with the puzzles that you solve to progress through the game, also. Both are a bit challenging, but not too hard.
The minigames are replayable from the extras “media” menu. Yay.
The HOPs are pretty, but (for example) the first was a big junk pile with words and the second was a junkpile with outlines. (Just because the HOP art is colorful and bright instead of dim and dingy does not transform a junk pile into something better.) And even worse, it does not give you all of the words or all of the outlines at once or even one at a time as you make room for them where they are shown. Instead, you have to find all of the ones listed, and finally, then, you get more. There are several rounds of this. And in one puzzle, I would never have figured out the last item without the hint.
I see no way to replay the HOPs
Despite the old-fashioned HOPs, this game is an immediate CE purchase for me. Besides the usual CE bells and whistles, there are paintings to be painted, a bonus chapter, and a “secret game." I should grade down one star for the HOPs, but I am having so much fun, it gets top marks.
I recommend this game!

Though I have not played much more than the demo, I write to recommend whether to by the CE or the SE because that's what I want to know when both are out.
This game has all the CE bells and whistles, so if you really like the game, the CE might be worth it.
The game has
=Decent art
=Music that fits, and one theme I really like so far
=OK HOPs and an option to play something else if you didn't want to play the HOPs
=Minigames seem awfully easy. One had nothing that you had to figure out, you just placed shapes in obvious places.
I'm having fun and it seems a good way to while away a rainy afternoon. So give it a try. I bought the CE and don't regret it, but the SE would be fun, too.
