there haven't been too many Alawar games that I've tried and not liked. this one has a storyline that grabs you and cajoles you into wanting to find out what happens next.
this is not a super challenging game, but the graphics are nice and it progresses at a good pace. I like having several inventory items, and several locations to figure out where to use them. this game has it!
while the characters are drawn in the style of the Treasures of Mystery Island, but the developer has come a long way since then. I'll admit that I missed having voiceovers, but it's not a dealbreaker for me. the game opens up in wide screen, which is never a bad thing.
the puzzles could have been more challenging. the hidden object scenes always left an item or two that were difficult to find and required some concentration. the black bar tips, even in the advanced mode, were too informative. the journal had detailed entries, and I was up to about page 42 when the demo ended. there's also a jump map.
all in all not the best game I've ever played but it definitely held my interest from the minute I started the demo. I was actually disappointed when it ended. I've got a punch card credit burning up at the end of the month and I think I know just what I'm going to use it on.
I recommend this game!

I was not impressed with this one. even on the harder mode, your inventory items will glow when you can use them at that time. there was a hidden object scene with one item to find. the graphics and sound were nothing to write home about.
there was too much hand holding even in the advanced mode, the storyline might have gotten my attention if the gameplay wasn't so rudimentary and obviously for beginners. if you don't have a lot of experience in this genre it might be a decent starting point to see where you might use different inventory items without getting frustrated, but the rest of us gamers are probably going to be a little put off by the Big Bird level of challenge here.
I don't recommend this game.

guess what? grandma's missing! I know it's surprising, but something strange is going on at her house, and her neighbor is dead in her basement!
this is a frustrating game for anyone who has played a few hidden object games. you will revisit the same hidden object scene a couple of times; I will give the developer credit for not repeating items. as a matter of fact, the items you found last time will not be in the scene again. however, it is sometimes hard to grab an item, and you might have to click on it several times in order to mark it off your list. all hidden object scenes are your standard list. an item or two might be basically interactive (click on a box to open it#, but there is no indicator as to what items require an extra step;
the puzzles were the most annoying part of the game for me. the game would not allow you to place a puzzle part in the wrong place. one puzzle had to reassembling a key. you could not put a piece where it didn't belong, it would simply go back to your pile of parts. there was your color puzzle where you can't have the same color touching. if you attempted to paint two adjacent spaces the same color it would remind you of the instructions and not fill in the second space.
the graphics and sound were nothing to write home about. you have a journal #though the middle of the top of the inventory bar is a strange place to have it). you also have a map that marks where you still need to complete an objective, but you can't use it to jump. there are two options for difficulty, but the harder mode wasn't anything I would consider difficult.
the bottom line is that I really can't recommend this game for beginners, who would be put off by having to click an item repeatedly in hidden object scenes. I also can't recommend it for experienced players, who will not be challenged in the slightest.
I don't recommend this game.

I was wary of demoing after reading the first review, but I'm glad I did. while there's nothing uber-challenging about the adventure or puzzle part of the game, the hidden object scenes will leave you searching intently for one or two items. while the colors are muted, I found them appropriate for the mood the developers were going for. it was also a pleasant surprise to have a fragmented hidden object scene pop up unexpectedly.
I could have done without the dialogue, I think they could have presented the storyline in a much better manner than they did. however, it wasn't enough to detract from the game too much and wouldn't prevent me from purchasing it.
the gameplay seems to flow pretty well, it doesn't plod along (with the exception of the previously mentioned dialogue). there is a map that allows you to jump to other locations and gives you a preview of the area, and a pretty detailed journal that records whatever important details you might need later. I found the game to be of average length.
the sound effects and soundtrack were not obnoxious, they didn't really get my attention at all.
I recommend this game!

if you've played another Shadow Wolf Mysteries game, you've played this one. as a matter of fact, if you've played any other ERS game you've played this one. it's their standard, formulaic game, but somehow I end up liking them anyway.
there are three levels of difficulty. the graphics are up to ERS standards, the voiceovers are average, the puzzles are nothing we haven't seen before. the hidden object scenes aren't too cluttered and are not too easy nor too hard. gameplay flows well, I've got a slew of inventory items and several active spots to figure out.
all in all, even though it's not anything new it's still an ERS game and I've not yet been disappointed by anything they've put out. though a note to the developers - you can quit using that same old sign post in every single one of your games. go for a different look next time.
I recommend this game!

there was nothing about this game that was really any different than the dozens and dozens of hidden object adventures being put out lately. though instead of crashing your car, it's a boat. basic premise is the same - your boyfriend has gone missing, and you know he's out there somewhere.
there are three options for challenge level, plus a "custom" option that allows you to choose each aspect seperately - puzzle skip yes or no, sparkles on or off, etc.
the graphics on this were much better than average, but unfortunately the mediocre, wooden voice overs almost cancelled them out.
in the demo, there were no puzzles that had any challenge to them at all.
in conclusion, there was nothing super great, or really bad, about this game. I would recommend playing the demo to see if it's your style. this might be just up your alley if you're not an expert level player.
I recommend this game!

this was, by far, one of the worst 10 games I've ever played. see the screenshots above? see all the hidden numbers? there's your entire plot. find the numbers. unfortunately, after you find them they don't disapper and if you click on them repeatedly you are penalized.
you get some sort of bonus that flashes when you find numbers quickly.
there is no hint system, though the numbers are listed around the border so you can see which ones you've already found.
there are several levels to each area.
the music is annoying after 3 minutes.
I wouldn't recommend this to anyone, I see it as nothing more than an exercise in futility.
I don't recommend this game.

I haven't come across a game quite this good in some time. there are three levels of difficulty to choose from, fantastic graphics, believable voiceovers, interactive hidden object scenes, a great variety of puzzles of different challenge levels (and even some with a new spin!). some of the puzzles were repeated maybe once too often for my liking, two of them appeared at least once per chapter and got more difficult each time.
there were a multitude of scenes to visit, but each chapter was completely encapsulated within those areas - for example, when you finish with chapter one, you move on to an entirely new location.
there were no repeat hidden object scenes, and among them were the standard list, find X number of items, find the items that go together, and return the items to the scene. there were great many tasks to complete, but each one was logical and there weren't many times when you were left scratching your head over why you had to use this particular object here. you never had more than 7 or so objects in your inventory, and you didn't carry most of them for very long.
you had a journal, though I think it was only about 35 pages at the completion of the game - I wish it had recorded more. I hit the "volume up" button on my keyboard as Sophia's parents were getting ready to speak and it skipped the scene with no way to replay it. there was also a map. your hints are delivered in the form of our wise and feathered friend, Randall and of course we are joined on our journey by the pocket dragon again.
all in all, I loved this game. I have put this on my very short list of "replayable" games - the game clocked me at 11 hours, so between the fantastic game itself and the length, I definitely got my money's worth.
and somehow, even though this says it's the final installment, I have a feeling we'll be seeing Sophia again. I can't wait, this is one of the few series that actually got better in each installment. kudos to the developers.
I recommend this game!

while this is billed as a hidden object game, there have been no hidden object scenes in the trial. you simply pick up inventory items (a *lot* of inventory items) laying around on the ground. and about those inventory items - they're ones that you sometimes need to combine together, meaning I used five inventory items to accomplish one small task that gave me yet another inventory item.
I came across one puzzle, which required less than a dozen clicks to solve.
the graphics are not that great, the lip movements don't match up to the voiceover, and the storyline is severely lacking. there was no challenge to this game, items picked up were used almost immediately. there were many locations to visit, but once you picked up your four inventory items in that scene you were done with it for good.
I don't think I'll get this even when it appears as a daily double. even the addition of "accomplishments" didn't redeem this one in my view.
I don't recommend this game.

this game opened up in wide screen, and you are given three levels of difficulty to choose from. i selected the middle, and there were no sparkles to indicate HO scenes.
the hidden object scenes have some interactive items to find, some of them need more than one step to complete. the items were not difficult to find, not blended into the background, but not so easy that you can find them without referring to the list.
you have a journal, where every step you take is recorded. in a half hour, there were over 20 pages. you do not have a map.
there are no voiceovers, just text to read that you can click through.
the puzzles are standard fare, and nothing too challenging about them.
overall, it's not a bad game. there's nothing unique about it and it's not challenging, but I'll still purchase for something to do since the HOPA scene has been pretty dry lately save for collector's editions.
I recommend this game!
