I am an avid follower of the Dark Parables series - I adore each and every game because of their beautiful graphics and sound effects, and their enthralling storylines.
I bought this straight away simply because it was a Dark Parables game, but was actually quite disappointed when I started playing.
Cutscenes are incredibly pixellated, something that I've never had a problem with before. FROG scenes weren't as nice as I remember them - it was like there were too many textures in one place, and it made everything look grainy, instead of the smooth graphics I remember from previous DP games. The magical sound effects in the FROG scenes are also gone - and while that isn't necessarily a problem for me, it was one of those things that was unique to the DP series, and its quite disappointing to see it gone.
Also, I've always noticed that at the end of each DP, the next in the series is hinted at - usually from something you previously saw in one of the scenes. I'm pretty sure I found a statue of the Beast from Beauty and the Beast, and yet there was no hinting at the next game. (It isn't something to overly worry about, but it was just a detail that seemed to be missed, of course, if there isn't going to be another DP, I understand).
On the other hand, the storyline was just as good as it is in all other DP games, and it was quite a good game, just with several iconic details missing from my favourite series.
Simply put, Blue Tea Games - you are wonderful game developers as it is, you don't need somebody else to come in and mutilate what was already a beautiful series. (No offense intended, Eipix - I like your games too, just not on DP.)
Jack of All Tribes has to be my most favourite time-management game! I love the colourful, vibrant graphics and the adorable dinos. The music is cheerful, but just like in most other games, it can get a bit repetitive.
I absolutely adore the storyline, which I found filled with innocent humour. The difficulty is hard enough you don't feel like you're playing a child's game, but easy enough that you don't have to sweat trying to get the level finished before time runs out.
All in all, I found this to be a cute, innocent game filled with humour and relaxing fun.
The only problem with this is... IT DOESN'T HAVE A SEQUEL!!!!!!!!!!! Argghhhhh!!!!!!!
I played both demos (the SE and CE) and can tell you the CE is definitely worth the price. In addition to your usual bonus chapter and extras, Achievements are now unlocked, starting from the moment you rescue Kitty, your adorable feline helper. Be sure to check out the achievements the moment you start the game so that you don't miss any!
The graphics in this game are absolutely gorgeous, with bright colours that still allow the gloomy, mysterious atmosphere to rein over the game without forcing you to turn your screen brightness up so you can see. In addition to the good graphics, the cutscenes are fully rendered and play as movies, rather than just being pictures moving across the screen.
So far I haven't had to mute the music or change any of the audio settings, as the music isn't overly that repetitive and the sound effects hold together really well. Voice overs are well done with good voices, not the electronic sounding ones that grate on your ears every time you hear someone speak.
The storyline is one of the ones that catches you immediately, even if it is one of the "save the bride" stories that has been done to death. And yet... there's a twist! #I won't spoil the surprise!#
There were three difficulty settings, though I only ever play on casual #I only play games for the enjoyment, not the challenge# and it was challenging enough that I wasn't speeding through, but didn't have to overly touch the hint. Puzzles are varied from what I've seen, and there was one or two I haven't played before #not that that really matters considering my picky attitude towards games#. HO scenes were crisp, with FROG #fragmented object#, shapes and take-and-replace, with the choice to switch over to dominoes instead of HO. You are given an interactive map that allows you to move to the selected location #my favourite kind of map# and a feline helper that can fetch items you can't reach.
Though I've only played the demos, I haven't yet found a problem that I can complain about!
So, all in all, this seems to be an absolute masterpiece of a game, and I'm definitely adding this one to my wishlist and to my favourites!
Deep in the heart of an enchanted forest, a forbidden love blooms. Guide the human Eveline as she sets out to rescue her beloved from the clutches of a tyrant.
Keep in mind, I don't actually like HO scenes, where you have to go rifling through things you don't need, so this game was perfect for me. The storyline was your usual romantic storyline where you have to go rescue your loved one from the evil villain, but was original enough that it didn't seem like you were replaying a different game all over again.
I played on the casual difficulty, and found it perfectly balanced with a bit of challenge to keep me interested but not too much to have me beating my head the desk. The game lasted me a good few hours (don't ask how many, I wasn't keeping count# and the bonus chapter was at least two hours for me.
The bonus chapter was set from BEFORE the actual game, so those who buy the Standard version won't miss anything by not getting the CE.
The dragon #your hint# was adorable and cute, and was very helpful. If the hint told you to change location, the ring of light remained for a few more actions - showing you if you needed to keep going, or pick something up in the new location, which I found extremely helpful.
The SG was a bit hard to find at first, but it is actually sitting right under your nose - its the compass above your dragon.
Graphics were utterly magical, though cutscenes could be slightly pixelated #blurred) - but it didn't seem to be the case for all of them.
Sound FX were good, and your dragons makes cute sighing noises when he's charged.
All in all, about the best game I've played in ages.
