With the colder months settling in, along with new promotions at McD's, it seemed like this was a good time to let the Musings readers know about one the better versions of Monopoly out there. Just the game we used to play, minus the soda, chips and dip, and WNCI radio in the background, we can customize the game to our liking, and we have the option to change the starting cash amount. We can start with $1000, the traditional $1500, and $2000. You can set how you want to play the Free Parking space, from no cash to a set amount of $250, the taxes only, or a random reward directly from the bank. We also have the option to play again real people on a LAN and against AI players. The little pewter pieces have all taken on their own personalities. My favourite is the little dog.
Along with these custom set-ups we also have the option to let the bank auction off properties when people land on them and pass them up. I chose not to use this option as I wanted the game to have a more retro feel. You can even pick an environment in which you want to play, from a 60s flat, to a spaceship. You can still bring your snacks, even though they tasted better back in the days before HFCS,and crank your net radio up on Beach 95.1 of you want that nostalgic vibe. It's not exactly like playing with your friends on a rainy Saturday afternoon, but it's pretty close.
I recommend this game!

This game has been out for some time, but I had recently rediscovered it after losing it awhile back. Magic Match is one very addictive game, and it will keep you going for hours, and even days. You start out as a wizard on a little quest in an enchanted forest with a furry companion not unlike an Ewok. This annoying little dude is Giggles, and he is about the only annoying about this game, except for the bard that sings a silly little ditty between areas as you go on your quest.
This is not the typical match 3 game, as you will be collecting components on the grid to cast spells and make potions. With each new area you come into, the objects on the grid change, and there are more barriers added to make your gameplay increasingly difficult, but they always stay on theme. In the forest, hunt the grid for big blue mushrooms and bugs and such. In the tropics, for pirate treasure and hulu masks on a volcanic island, so the terrain does change along the way. In some places, Giggles takes over the grid and plays his own version of Pac-Man.
To really enjoy this game, you have to remember that is was created back in the early 2000s-late 1990s, and click the option to mute Giggles. It makes the gameplay so much better, but the bard's silly songs are few, and far between, so just listen as you give your eyes a break from the grid. You will soon find yourself competing with others in your house and trying for a better score in Magic Match.
I recommend this game!

Although the leaves might be changing colours up north, here in the South, we are still having sunny days in the 80s, and locals are hitting the beaches on the weekends. For those of us lucky enough to be on the Gulf Coast, here is a game to while away the weekend once those ever so predictable autumn showers start coming in, and bringing those welcome cold fronts along with them. You know the pattern, 2 days rainy, 2 days cold, 3 days nice, rinse, later repeat from October thru to February. For those that are just missing the summer sun, it might just perk you up.
Beach Party Craze takes us to some fun sub-tropical hotspot where you play as a young woman whom is visiting her friend that runs a beach service. Your friend wants to go home to visit with her ailing mother, but is afraid that she will lose a local competition to her ex-boyfriend whom is running a rival beach service.
At the end of the summer the most successful beach service will win the prize of becoming a business partner with the man whom own all the beaches in the area.
You take over the business and you are now setting up umbrellas, beach chairs and towels, running cold drinks, cocktails and sandwiches, and selling souvenirs, along with giving people rides on a multi-person jet-ski contraption call a Big Banana. You have to meet with certain goals to advance to the next level. You can upgrades your services, and train new employees to run things for you a little quicker and more efficiently. Luckily, the customers in this game tend to be pretty patient compared to some other time management games. The little game can get addictive, so good luck with it, and remember to upload it to whatever pad you might take to the beach, or even the mountains this winter.
I recommend this game!

I'm not sure how many readers here have come across the webcomic Misfile, but the main character of this match 3 game reminds me much Rumsiel, but they have been banished from Heaven to correct a mistake for very different reasons. In this game, our lazy angelic worker, Angelo, spends far too much time updating his Faithbook status and now some demons have slipped in on his watch and stolen seven artifacts, and he has to go down into H377 to get them back. He's a witty little dude, and he will be matching wits with some monstrous, but not so bright creatures along the way. The puzzle he has to solve feature icons that represent the seven deadly sins, which many people are far more familiar with than the seven cardinal virtues.
At the start of the game, you must chose one of these as your personal icon, from the Golden Boy with the toothy grin representing Pride, to the voluptous pink-haired lady puffing on her hook4h to represent Lu5t, you will find them all there. Your laz-about angel is pretty talented at witty jabs targeted at taunting his foes, but as to the game mechanics, sometimes the grid gets so far ahead of you when it cascades, that you can't get back in there until it stops. Like the massively addictive game, Heroes of Kalevala, certain grouping will give you tools to help you clear the grid faster, but Heaven & H377 is no HoK. If match 3 games are your kind of game, then add this to your collection, because it has a great soundtrack, and has its moments, but there are better games like this to be found, right here on this site.
I recommend this game!

The Great Pharaoh is anything but great. A simple match 3 game from a simpler time, maybe early 2000s, late 1990s. The back story in why we are playing this game is a little disturbing. They tell us of how different kings would build their great cities in Kemet, and what resources they would use to fund the building. In this tale, we are funding the royal coffers by, hoo boy... pretty much tomb raiding for gold.
Knowing a little about Kemetic faiths and practices of the time, it was surprising that this game get through to be downloaded. It is simple enough to play, match 3 stones up until you get enough gold to finish the level, and try to take out the mummies that will steal the gold along the way, but can you blame these mummies for wanting their money back? Kemetics believed that they could take their earthly treasures with them, and sure, there were tomb raiders back even then. These thieves usually ended up dying rather painfully, but for a king to send a team of raiders in to scavange gold from former nobles would have put a serious black mark on his reign, no matter how good his intentions were.
The graphics were a bit fuzzy, and even though the music started out having a cool Talamasca-style rif, it soon was the same rif over and over again, so not so cool. If you like games about Egypt, there are many to be found, but the devs needed to do a bit more digging in their libraries before putting this together. The Great Pharaoh? Not so great.
I don't recommend this game.

I was a bit wary of trying out this game, since the first Jar of Marbles was such a let down, but I really enjoyed the sequel much more. Jar of Marbles II: Journey to the West brought with it a great tie-in to a classic Chinese legend, and a far more challenging game. This was no ordinary marble popper. There was stategy involved, and your moves had to be precise, and quick, since each level was timed. We were not stuck using the same old jars or marbles. In the jar were blue marbles with jigsaw puzzle pieces on them, and whenever one of these match 3 sets were eliminated, it gave us another puzzle piece to find an animal that was part of the legend. I did not play long enough to find the Monky King, but if anything, this game did make me want to read the old tale of Journey to the West again.
Jar of Marbles II: Journey to the West is a far superior game to its prequel, and if the developers keep on this track, then this series could live on for a long time, and I look forward to seeing what other stories they might bring into it. Don't even bother with Jar of Marbles, and go straight to this game, because you will enjoy it so much more.
I recommend this game!

If you like the challenge of solitary mahjong, then you are really going to enjoy Mahjong World Contest. You will take on many, many different puzzles and challenges along the way, from timing, to taking out certain tiles, to clearing the board in less than so many moves. Each puzzle offer three different challenges, and you earn a star for each one you complete. This is one great strategy game, but I have yet to find something in a casual mahjong game that looks as fun as the games they played in Kung Fu Mahjong, but this one will keep you on your toes. The light sounding music in the background is what you would commonly hear at your local Jade Lantern restaurant. It might explain why I was craving Egg Drop Soup, General Tso chicken, and China Black Tea while playing this game.
The puzzles lay out in many kinds of setups, even a yin-yang. This is the kind of game mahjong players can really get into, and with such great graphics, there most likely will be a sequel. This is simply solitary mahjong at its best. So BFG, where is our casual Go game? For those whome have seen or read Hikaru No Go, you know there is no casual Go game, not the way they play.
I recommend this game!

If you are fan of the Cake Mania games, then Fashion Forward might just be likable for you, since it plays pretty much the same way, and is also made by Sandlot Games. Unlike the cake game, this retail time management set-up is a bit more chaotic. Before each level, you get an option to buy new collections for your stores, in both male or female fashions, and these items are added to your inventory. You also have the option to add upgrades to the store itself to aid in customer patience by offering a more pleasing atmosphere or little sweet treats to calm your customers down.
Risha's plan was simple, after becoming a successful indie film director, she wanted to just take a girl's day out and go shopping, but she could only find tiny clothes for Hollywood-type bodies. So where do the people that make these movies shop, the directors, the editors, the gaffers, and all those other people we see listed on those rolling movie credits? So now, Risha is opeing a retail shop for people in Hollywood that work behind the scenes, and even though the concept is good, basing the gameplay on the Cake Mania franchise was not such a good execution.
There was too much added too soon into the game, as per the giftwrapping, and those annoying customers that could cause others to lose their train of thought on what they want for a time while we take care of him or her. We do get a reprieve when the teen boys and girls show up together, and they are too busy flirting to notice that we might slow down a bit, and just like with the cake game, we have the old lady with her little dog. Feeding this sweet old woman treats is a good way to keep her patient, since she gives them to her teacup pup, and loves the fact that we love her pet as much as she does.
This game had lots of potential to be better than it is, but the originality in the gameplay mechanics was lacking. Don't try to sell me another Cake Mania game in a new package, because there are already too many as it is.
I don't recommend this game.

Lamp of Aladin was given to us by those great devolopers that gave us 4 Elements and Glyph, and their style is still very fresh, even after all this time in this fun retelling of the classic tale from Scheherazade's 1001 Arabian Nights. In this match 3 game, we follow the story of Aladin in full detail, and not the Disney-fied version. It is still not quite acurate to the original story, which was set in Western China and featured two genies, one of the ring and one of the lamp. In this game, we help the street rat turned magical prince attempt to win the hand in marriage to the lovely Princess Boudour, but there are many things stopping him. An evil vizier that wants ultimate power, and the normal dangers that come with adventuring. Al has Genie and his pet parrot to help him, along with some other simple tools, but to gain these things, we must match them up as we blaze a trail for Al to follow to get to the next part of the story.
While this story is the one most people are familiar with thanks to popular media of the last century or so, the developers tell the story in a fun and fast way. Aladin was pretty clever in his own right, due to his survival skills, and Genie is pretty much there to help him along when he gets in a bind. I had fun with this version of this story, but please remember, not all jinn are as helpful as Genie, and be careful of what you wish for.
I recommend this game!

Cleave had reviewed Be Richer for Musings awhile back, but I never really got to play it until now, and I really enjoyed it. Be Richest was pretty much the same, but with more of an adventure element in that we are supposed to stop the vermin, human and animal, that has infested our town. The town mayor and his professional accomplice have wiped out the city treasury, and now its up to the new city engineer, that is the player, to rebuild the town and make it flourish again.
While this game did have the base elements of Be Richer, and refurbishing the more worn parts of town are something many local metropolitan politicians might learn from this game, the constant chasing of bandits and rats was irritating. I did like the fact that we can help the builders along by whacking on the housing units and businesses with a hammer to speed things up. Also, we did not get the option to hire city managers to boost our scores. I did like that we got to fix up our own little part of town down by the beach with upgrades. It was much nicer than a lame trophy room.
I have seen both good and bad things about this third installment of the Be Rich real estate and time management game, but I rather liked it. I saw far more pros than cons, but I'd like to give all the games a try before I consider getting them all. Just for the record, Be Richer is already on my drive, and Cleave wants to purchase this one. Hope he enjoys the rats and bandits.
I recommend this game!
