Haunted Hotel Room 18 is probably one of my favorite Halloween games of the season. Actually, it is probably one of my favorite games in the Haunted Hotel series. There is so much to like in this game, starting with an excellent storyline. The graphics are excellent, showcasing the versatility of this developer. I remember when the first Haunted Hotel games were released, and this game reminds me of what originally made this one of my favorite series.
Okay, so at least for me the gameplay seemed rather easy at times and perhaps a bit predictable but nevertheless, I found Room 18 to be such a wonderful game for a cold, stormy day and so enjoyable. Another surprise is that I absolutely enjoyed every puzzle in the game. There was a new puzzle, or at least one that I don’t recall seeing in the past, and I loved fiddling around to move those keys into the correct position. There was also another puzzle that I’ve not seen in ages that is a different spin on the unblock me type. For someone who doesn’t particularly enjoy too many puzzles in HOPA games, I found those in Room 18 to very entertaining.
The HOS were fun and included various styles but were predominately the list type that I love. The only style of HOS I truly dislike is the one where we need to find matching pairs of items hidden behind other objects in the scene. There were several of the storybook type scenes and I did find some of the required items difficult to locate. Overall, the HOS were very good and as much fun as the puzzles.
The spooky atmosphere added to the creepiness of the game and at times I felt like I was going to jump out of my chair. I love a game that has this sort of feel to it and that the unexpected did happen. Although some of the gameplay was predictable and found items were used right away, at other times some items remained in my inventory until later. There did seem to be a bit of back and forth and the map did help when I wasn’t sure where to get back to the place where I knew that an item should be used. In the end, I think this is a wonderful game that is suitable for teens as well as adults.
Since I had played the beta for the game, it was one that I knew I would purchase as soon as it was released, and I did. Even though I think that Haunted Hotel Room 18 is one of the best games that was released this fall, as always, please try the demo to see if it is one you will enjoy as well. Happy gaming!
I recommend this game!

When I first became a member at BFG eons ago, I always looked forward to Thanksgiving and the release of the annual Mystery Case Files game. Although I found most of the games good, only two are my all-time favorites, and one is related to the story of Phineas Crown – a storyline that is revisited with Mystery Case Files: Black Crown. After playing the beta for Black Crown I knew it was a game that I would love. Black Crown is the first MCF game that I have looked forward to in the past several years, and this one is well worth the wait. Kudos to the developer who has done a wonderful job with this game because it is everything I hoped it would be.
If there is anything that I dislike about the game it is that in some of the HOS, the items are very tiny and difficult to identify. I have a 34” monitor and I still had difficulty finding some items because they are too small. Most of the HOS were better than the few with minuscule items to find, and those were much more fun to play. One of my favorite HO scenes is early in the game where I had to find matches between the chalk drawings on wall sections with the sketches on paper notes.
One of the best things aside from the storyline are the puzzles in the game. I love some of the Rube Goldberg puzzles that are signature to this series. Black Crown has some of my favorite puzzles and contains one that I haven’t seen in years. It is a puzzle where we much place hands on a pocket watch in order to cover every hour on the watch face. I loved this puzzle the first time I ever encountered it in a game, and it is just as much fun today.
I have not yet completed the game, but I am almost all the way to the Bonus Chapter that I will play a bit later. What I have played of the Black Crown is wonderful and I think it is one of the best MCF games in several years. If future MCF games are of the same caliber as Black Crown I will once again look forward to the tradition of playing an MCF game during the holiday week. Although I love this game, please try the demo to see if you will enjoy it as well. Happy gaming!

Wow, Halloween Chronicles Evil Behind a Mask is an awesome and the perfect Halloween game. There is just enough scare factor to make it great fun without it being far too creepy. I love it, and I am not a huge fan of most of the Halloween games we’ve had this year.
The graphics are terrific and even with this developer’s love of intense coloration in its games, these are far more Halloween appropriate. I enjoy seeing and finding all of the little detail in each scene. There are some in the HOPS that I even though they were not on the item list, they were fun to click to see what happened. Something that I truly appreciate is that this developer has listened to gamers and given us true Custom Setting in its games. I appreciate being able to set my own hint and skip times to my own specifications.
The HOS are very creative and they are not simply ones where we find the items. I’ve had fun playing through the scenes and finding all of the little special details hidden within. One of my favorite HOS is the carousel but there are many more, all of them so creative and well-designed. Some of the HOS are multi-level as well. There is a Match-3 game included that you can switch to if you don’t want to play the HOS.
I found the Mini Games or Puzzles to be as much fun as the HOS. The puzzles were, at least for me, as enjoyable as the HOS, which doesn’t often happen. Most of the puzzles have been seen in other games and most were easy but, of course, I play in the “Easy” mode. One of the puzzles I enjoyed the most was the one where I had to adjust light beams to turn off pairs of orbs but there were still others that were as enjoyable.
Overall, this game was so wonderful that I know I will play it again, and it is destined to become my favorite Halloween classic. The entire game is so creative and filled with Halloween fun that even the bad guy doesn’t seem that creepy. Kudos to the developer for creating one of the best ever Halloween games that I am sure will become a favorite with other gamers as well. Even though I love Halloween Chronicles Evil Behind a Mask, please try the demo to see if this is a game you will enjoy. Happy gaming!

Unless I missed a game somewhere along the line, I think Fairy Godmother Stories is a new series for this developer, and I must say that Cinderella, although a different spin on the beloved fairy tale, is a wonderful game that I absolutely loved. After a month or more of dark games it is so refreshing to see that we have now put Halloween behind us and are moving forward into a much more pleasant time of year for games.
Cinderella is such a creative game, beginning with the concept of Fairy Godmother being a detective who has worked on previous cases with Detective Godwin. It isn’t long before Fairy Godmother finds herself up to her missing wand in trouble.
Right with the beginning HOS, I knew this game would be different and so much fun to play. The HOS are so creative that they are entertaining and so much fun to play through. Although there is an alternate game in lieu of searching for items, it was so much fun to look for the items that I felt no need to switch to the alternate. I am not a huge fan of puzzles BUT I love the puzzles in Cinderella. I had no trouble figuring out what to do with each puzzle, but maybe that is because I have played some of them in the past. There are many puzzles in the game that I haven’t seen in quite some time, and most of those are puzzles I like.
Since I had previously played the beta for the game there was no doubt that I would jump in and purchase it right away, which is what I did. I was up very late and until the wee hours of the morning playing the game and I honestly feel that this is one of the best games I’ve played in ages. Another thing I appreciate about Cinderella is the retelling of the story and the fact that even though Cinderella isn’t the sweet girl we have always loved, the game is still one that I can play with younger members of the family without having to worry if it would be appropriate. As always, even though this game is now going to be one of my favorite all-time games, I recommend that you try the demo to see if it is a game you will enjoy. Happy gaming!

When the first Dreadful Tales game came out earlier this year, I really didn’t care for it and had no desire to play the second game. However, as the earlier game had almost a 5-star rating I decided to try this new one – The Fire Within and found that for me it was a much better game. For one thing the scenery in the game was not nearly as dark. Before long I found myself totally involved in the action and I was hooked.
Everything about The Fire Within is a vast improvement beginning with the lighter graphics. Although some of the HOS are dingy, I could at least find the items I was looking for. The HOS are very creative and even with some of the items being small, I still could find them. I think I only used the hint button once which shows an improvement over many of the past HOS from this developer.
For someone who doesn’t care for a lot of puzzles, I found those in The Fire Within to be excellent. They were not over-the-top difficult and with a little patience I was able to solve them. There were some of my favorite puzzles included in the mix and some that were very well-designed. Overall, I found myself enjoying each new puzzle as it came along. It is also a good thing that I didn’t feel like there was a new puzzle to solve every time I needed to
The storyline held my interest, even though it made me cringe to see fires being intentionally set in the forest. I live in Northern California and we have huge fires here, some that only last year wiped out entire communities, so the subject matter of The Fire Within was a bit difficult for me. That being said the story is very interesting and progresses in a way that it kept me playing in spite of my misgivings.
Overall, Dreadful Tales the Fire Within is an excellent game and one that I predict will have as many high ratings as the first game in the series. As always, I recommend that you try the demo to see if this is a game you will enjoy as well. Happy gaming!

In recent times, this developer has not been a favorite because of its heavy use of puzzles in its games. However, when I met Morty, a cat with attitude, that changed everything and I absolutely loved this game. I wasn’t planning to play more than just the demo of Mystery Tales Art and Souls, but I simply had to keep going and buy the game. This is one that I really enjoyed!
Several years ago, there was a rash of games that dealt with the subject of people being sucked into paintings and, at that time, I was rather tired of the storyline. That being said, I truly enjoyed this game. The story is one of a father’s love, albeit misguided. I don’t generally like to give a “blow by blow” description of HOPA games and all that we can expect to find so I will leave it to others to provide all the details.
Since I am not a huge fan of puzzles or mini-games, I was definitely surprised that I enjoyed the those in Art and Souls. There were a few old favorite puzzles that I haven’t seen in quite a while and those kept me busy happily solving away. The HOPS are amazing and beautiful and, IMHO, worth the price of the game.
We all know this developer has a great love affair with intense colors and we will find them in this game as well but the colors don’t seem as unrealistic and don’t rely on too many neon colors. I think some of the backgrounds have been lightened up as well and that helped a lot. Mystery Tales Art and Souls is a game that I find very enjoyable. There is a bit of back and forth between scenes but I like that more than I do the strictly linear games. I now have to remember where I saw an item so I can go back and complete the required actions to move forward.
Generally having a pet helper in a game isn’t something I love, but a cat with attitude makes all the difference. In fact, he was rather a fun cat and I hope to see him in another game from this developer. Wish I could have a Morty of my own but I think my Yorkies would rebel if I brought a cat home so it’s safer to have one in the game world.
Although I haven’t quite finished the game, I certainly like everything about this one. Even though this one is a keeper and perfect for me, as always, I recommend that you try the demo to see if you will enjoy it as well. Happy gaming!

Haunted Manor: Remembrance is one of the weirdest games I have ever played. I absolutely loved the first three games in the series that were from its original developer. I’ve not really cared for any of the new ones by the current developer, and I seriously had to question this game. One of these days I will listen to myself because I always recommend that gamers try the demo first. Unfortunately, I purchased the game outright WITHOUT playing the demo, and it was a huge mistake. Since I haven’t enjoyed the previous two Haunted Manor games from this developer, I have no idea why I would jump to purchase this one without trying the demo.
Although there are some great instances of creativity with Remembrance, I really disliked the storyline that has a young woman reliving the past and visiting the home where her parents perished in a fire. Admittedly, I didn’t play too much of the game as it became apparent very early on that this is not the typical scary Halloween game. What I played of the game portrayed a tale of descent into madness and having a family member who struggles with mental illness, the subject matter was simply too much for me to handle.
Yes, the month of Halloween is here and I do expect some good creepy games but, IMHO, this one should have come with a warning about its psychological content. A great ghost story would have been far better than a game where a young adult relives her childhood memories. Needless to say, I found many of the scenes rather disturbing and that is not what I want in a game. BFG has so many great Halloween themed games and I think I will go back and play one of those rather than try to struggle through a game that I find distasteful.
In the future, I will take my own advice and ALWAYS try the demo before I purchase a game. Haunted Manor: Remembrance is definitely a game you should try because you might enjoy the game.
I don't recommend this game.

Rite of Passage Bloodlines is going to make my list of one of the worst games to be released by BFG this year. The keyword that resonates through this game is BORING. I have played the game for over four hours and am not anywhere near completing it. I finally put it away because it was so tedious that I needed a breath of fresh air.
The storyline is simply silly and doesn’t make a whole lot of sense. You play a detective who has been hired to figure out who is murdering members of a royal family that lives on some small island. As I mentioned, I am still trying to figure out all the TEDIOUS bits and pieces that make up the storyline that is buried in minutiae. I should have realized that when the game got off to such a slow start that it wouldn’t pick up but I gave it the benefit of the doubt. After four hours of playing some of the most horrible junk pile HOS I’ve seen in my years of playing it finally became a bit too much.
There are tons of mini-games if that’s what rings your bell but most of them are nothing new. We’ve been there, done that many, many times before so they simply added to the boredom of a game where the gameplay seemed incredibly slow. Some of the mini-games seemed so difficult that I simply skipped them because I never liked them when I saw them in other games and they didn’t improve any in this one. Granted, there were a few puzzles that I really enjoyed but those were in the minority. There is a gimmicky seashell that adds a few more puzzles to the already overwhelming burden. I love great HOS far more than I do puzzles or mini-games, but those too are missing from this game.
My only suggestion is that you try the game before you buy it. You might enjoy it far more than this reviewer. Happy gaming!
I don't recommend this game.

Halloween Stories Horror Movie is simply a horrible game. Where I loved the first two Halloween Stories games, this one was a chopped-up compilation of three stories that maybe came together in the end but I couldn’t stand to play more than the first chapter and I struggled through that one. Admittedly, I was never a fan of the horror movie genre so I have no idea why I purchased this game, aside from the fact that I loved the first two games. I had hoped that this one would be just as good but I purchased the game outright without even trying the demo – big mistake folks!
The graphics were excellent and set the mood for the Fall Season but, IMHO, the graphics and the sound were the best part of the game. I loved the attention to detail in the game with skeletal arms skittering across the floor, pumpkins that howl when you touch them – all sorts of Halloween items that come to life. If the game and storyline had only been as good as the special effects then I might have actually enjoyed the game. For me at least, the three stories in the game simply didn’t work. Since I never saw any of the slasher Halloween related films of the past, I guess I couldn’t relate to the game.
The HOS were awful with the developer using washed out or tiny items to find. I had to use the hint button in several HOS simply to get through them. I wish the developer had included a skip button so that I could have been on my way with the needed item in hand rather than struggling through tedious HOS. It is strange to find HOS this awful in a game from a developer known for excellent graphics and well-designed HOS. On the other hand, the puzzles were excellent.
It is not often that I find a game where there is a super long lag between scene changes. When the game initially loads it takes almost two minutes while I am staring at a black screen that says loading. I also experience a black screen lag that would last approximately thirty seconds between scene changes.
Even though I didn’t care for this game and had some technical issues, please try the demo before you buy. If you are a great fan of things that go bump in the night and those old horror films then you might love this game. Happy gaming!
I don't recommend this game.

Whispered Secrets Dreadful Beauty seems to be a change from the previous games that we’ve seen from this developer. This is a dark and excellent game that drew me in right from the beginning. For me the game seemed a bit more difficult and not quite as easy as some of the more recent games we’ve seen. I loved that the solutions were not always obvious and that I sometimes had a difficult time figuring out where to go, or what to do next.
The mechanics in the game will often present a choice between various actions in order to solve a problem. The result of whichever action we select will somehow change the game, but until I replay it, I am not certain that anything actually changed the end result. It is a fun idea at least and one that guarantees I will definitely play the game more than once.
The HOPS were entertaining and it was difficult to not hit that hint button when I got stuck. Yep, I did have to resort to using it once or twice in the game, so I won’t earn the achievement for getting through the HOPS without using the dreaded hint button. The puzzles were also very good and I didn’t find any that resulted in a huge brain drain headache to solve.
The CE version of the game does offer a lot of extras. I enjoyed spotting the morphing objects and then the herbs that were hidden in all of the scenes. Sometimes the morphing objects jumped right out at me but sometimes I missed them when I first looked at a scene. Something I appreciate in the game is that there is a pop-out slider that will let you know how many herbs are to be found in each scene. Since I am fairly driven to find all of the collectibles in CE games, I always appreciate knowing how many there are to find.
Whispered Secrets Dreadful Beauty is a challenging and terrific game that held my attention as I played. I enjoyed the storyline and it took a bit of time to figure out who really was the “bad guy” in the game. I always enjoy a game that keeps me guessing! Even though I purchased the game, I recommend that you try the demo to see if this Whispered Secrets game is one that you will enjoy. Happy gaming!
