Greetings Master Detective, and with those words you are off on another task for the queen and an excellent new MCF game begins. Finally, we have a game that truly deserves the Editor’s Choice Award! I believe it was 2004 when I began my journey into the world of hidden object games with another MCF game Huntsville, and from that time I was “hooked” and became a lover of the hidden object genre. It has been twelve years and now with game fourteen in the series, The Broken Hour, my love of the Mystery Case Files games continues as a Thanksgiving holiday tradition.
Your job this time detective is to find George Pritchard, the queen’s missing photographer who is not only a valued employee but a dear friend as well. George has always loved “obscure historical places” and his last known location was Huxley’s Boarding House. Your journey begins when you arrive at the boarding house and encounter the first two in a cast of wonderfully depicted characters. This developer has an amazing ability to create characters that come to life with all of their characteristics both good and bad. There are so many special touches and clues in this game that begin with the number 14 on the gear shift knob in your car. Keep your eyes open as you move through the scenes to pick up on all of the clues that you could possibly miss if you don’t pay attention. To say that I love this game is an understatement because it excellent in so many ways. I am a big puzzle lover and, at least for me, the puzzles in the game are a huge plus. I can happily say that I am thrilled to leave the Dalimar saga behind (or at least I hope that is the case) but keep your eyes open for some subtle clues that might indicate the dreaded Dalimar saga is lurking in the wings. One more thing - pay attention and obey the rules at Huxley’s Boarding House because there might just be some unpleasant punishment in store if you happen to forget.
The technical aspects are exactly what we normally expect from this developer with great graphics, wonderfully created characters, great voiceovers and much more. Your tools include an interactive map and a journal. The journal is keeps track of your progress and objectives but it doesn’t always include the clues you might need later.
The HOPs are excellent with many being the list type that I happen to prefer but there are other styles as well but be sure to look for something a little extra in scene. The Broken Hour is perfect for those who love puzzles because there are plenty of them and some are quite challenging. I admit that I did struggle with more than one puzzle but don’t give up hope because they are doable and if you just can’t get them, there is a skip button. Early in the game there is a Rube-Goldberg type of puzzle that was introduced in the first Ravenhearst game and has since become almost a signature to the series. I enjoy these types of puzzles because they are multi-layered with some of the layers being easier than others.

If you enjoy the CE version of games, this one includes a lot of extra content that is better than in most CE games. There are 42 morphing objects, 14 ladybugs, collect tokens by playing a game in the extras section that will then open the Developer’s Hunt. Other standard extras include the strategy guide, bonus game, wallpapers, artwork, videos, music, case file, and a replay of HOPS and puzzles. For me the extras represent a terrific CE value.
This is probably one of the best games (at least of any that followed The 13th Skull) in the Mystery Case Files series. That being said the two Ravenhearst games released last year were excellent, even though I am so sick of the Dalimars and truly hope that I don’t see them again. The Broken Hour is a terrific game with some excellent gameplay features that include some of those difficult puzzles. I love the characters and think they are so true to life that I actually feel involved with them during the game. The storyline and the mystery surrounding the clocks are intriguing and have held my attention past the demo since the game was an immediate buy for me. If you are new to HOPA games The Broken Hour might seem a bit difficult but just hang in there. It is a game worth playing and adding to your gaming library. For me the game is one that I will play more than once as there is so much to do and find. A great mystery that I am sure will be a standout in the Mystery Case Files series. As always, please try the demo to see if The Broken Hour will be a game you will enjoy.
I recommend this game!

We all know cats have nine lives, right? Well it looks like my once favorite developer is having a resurgence of its life with some of its recent games and just maybe this new Grim Façade The Red Cat is leading the way. If you fondly remember the “bunny team” from yesteryear, then you will be happy to know they are now alive and well and hopping right back into the winner’s circle.
Returning to the roots of the first Grim Façade game you are once again in Venice and you’ve been called in by Mayor Ricci to investigate a series of murders where the only clue is a red cat imprint that is that is found at the scene of each crime. Mayor Ricci’s son received a red cat imprint and the mayor implores you to catch the culprit and save his son before it is too late.
As has always been the case with this developer the graphics are excellent with terrific hand drawn scenes. The voiceovers are excellent and with a good sound track the scene is set for a wonderful mystery game. Many of the fundamental elements of the series are again found in this latest game since you will find coins that can be used to purchase items that will be needed to help with the case. There is also a gimmicky tool that will help you see remnants of the crime in retrospect as you investigate.
The Red Cat is such a phenomenal game that I don’t want to give too much away since this is a game where discovering the puzzles and HOPS is something you should do for yourself. I will say that there is a very good variety in the puzzles and some of them are delightfully challenging or at least a bit above the norm. I think I enjoyed every element of this game when I tried the beta and knew that it would be one of those games that I would purchase without a second thought the minute it was released – and I did!
This developer is known for not including a lot of extras in its CE version of games but in this case, it is a good deal if you happen to prefer the CE games.
After this week’s release of a new Puppet Show game, fans of ERS now have a far better choice with the SE release of The Red Cat but this is only my opinion. I purchased the CE version of The Red Cat last month and enjoyed every minute of the game. Even though I think this is probably one of the better games we have had this year (hopefully a good warm-up for the holiday gaming season ahead), I suggest that you try the demo to see if Grim Façade The Red Cat is one you will enjoy as well.
I recommend this game!

When the first Beyond game arrived at BFG I was so swept away by a wonderful sci-fi game (something I would love to see more often) that had excellent gameplay, puzzles and HOP scenes. Beyond Light Advent is such a great game that I have played it several times since its release in July 2015. Today my wait for a sequel is over and Star Descendent seems even better. Star Descendent is so excellent that it will probably be at the top of my list for best HOPA game this year.
Today is Thomas’ 11th birthday and among his presents is something special that is sure to change not only his life but that of his mother Sarah (you) as well. While you are busy taking care of a kitchen mishap, Thomas opens a present that soon has him on a voyage of discovery and danger. Follow Thomas on an incredible roller coaster ride that will take you on the adventure of a lifetime.
The graphics in the game are beautiful as another world and the universe come to life. I love everything about this game and the graphics and sound are just a part of what make it so terrific. I don’t want to tell you too much about what to expect because discovery is part of the fun in Star Descendent. Early in the game you find a cute mechanical friend who helps you on your journey but you will find others as you progress. You also have an interactive map that will help you navigate through the game. While you are moving through the experience you will learn some amazing things about your son but most importantly the journey reinforces the love and bond between you and your son.
The HOPs in the game are so well-designed and creative that they were fun to play – even the storybook style that I don’t usually enjoy as much as some of the other types. The puzzles are excellent and, again, very creative with some that are not the usual fare. I found most of the puzzles to be quite doable and, even though some seemed difficult for me, I think others might find them easy. I love puzzles in games and the ones in Beyond Star Descendent are, IMHO, terrific and fit well in with the storyline.
If you like the CE version of HOPA games this one includes 31 collectible rockets to find, 19 morphing objects, achievements to earn as you play the game, bonus chapter, strategy guide, wallpapers, character gallery, music, replay of HOPs and a puzzles.
By now you have probably guessed that Beyond Star Descendent was an instant buy for me. No need to think about it or even wait for a special sale because I have been waiting almost seven months for the game to be released. This development team has created some of the best games that I have played since they first came to BFG several years ago with the Rite of Passage series. It seems like their skill and creativity has increased since that time and Star Descendent is proof. I am not sure if it is the theme that has made the game so wonderful but whatever the reason, this is what a game should be – refreshing, different and fun to play. IMHO, Star Descendent is most likely one of the best games this year and, if there are competitors, most of those will be from this developer. It is refreshing that they are not cranking games out so fast that they lose the spark of creativity in the process. Now it is time for me to go back and finish this excellent game. Even though I love the game, please try the demo to see if it is one you will enjoy as well.
I recommend this game!

Harrowed Halls Lakeview Lane is another game from a developer who at one time presented games that were quite excellent but then a few years ago their games took a major nose dive and now with Harrowed Halls I think it is time that they admit they no longer have what it takes to put together a good game.
This game is an abysmal failure technically as well as creatively. Of course we could almost guess from the time the beta was released that BFG would decide to slap the old “Editor’s Choice” Award on it in hopes that it might encourage sales of the game. Honestly folks, there is no way I would waste free PCC for the game.
In the end I must give those reviewers who had the patience to struggle through the game long enough to write more detailed reviews of the game. I suggest you look at the reviews for the game's CE version if you would like to have more information about the game. Unfortunately, I found the game so poorly designed that I uninstalled it within the first fifteen minutes of gameplay. I am sure there will be many gamers who will love this game but for me it is not one I will enjoy. Please be sure to try the demo first to see if this game might be one for you.

Okay when I saw the name of this new Puppet Show game that I think is probably number 10 (which is by the way probably 6 games too many) I groaned. Anyway, with a title like Bloody Rose, I mustered the courage to demo the game and ultimately found it a huge disappointment. The previous game in the series came along only a month ago (keep in mind that the first few Puppet Show games were at least a year apart) so I had no hope that the game would be something special – and with the obvious rush to market it isn’t.
In Bloody Rosie, you play a detective who has been asked by the town’s doctor, Thomas Cox, to investigate his wife’s mysterious death in the picture perfect city of Oldern Town. Dr. Cox believes his wife was murdered while the local sheriff believes that it was suicide. In his letter, Dr. Cox indicates that he saw something suspicious that night but it is too dangerous to send that information in a letter. With letter in hand, you are now on your way to Oldern Town and a new case. As intriguing as Dr. Cox’s letter might seem, the game is actually worse.
Bloody Rosie has absolutely gorgeous hand drawn artwork and exceptional graphics. The voiceovers are okay but there is a strange mix of accents that just add to the hodge-podge in this game. Unfortunately, the great graphics are just about all the game has to offer. The storyline is just plain choppy and unbelievable. Your tools include an interactive map and a flying puppet helper who takes photos to give you a perspective when you can’t always see behind things.
The game has the same sort of HOPS that this developer always uses with not much new to add to the mix. The puzzles are not the type I care for and there are just too many of them inserted in odd spots in the game. Honestly, the game as a whole is so unappealing that I barely managed to make it through the demo.
If you happen to prefer the CE version of games this one includes collectible roses, achievements, wallpapers, screensavers, concept artwork, music, videos, a bonus chapter, a strategy guide and replay of HOPs and puzzles. As is usual, this developer refuses to add very many extras to its games and, Bloody Rosie is another example of this practice. IF I liked the game I would be more inclined to wait for the SE rather than spend money on a CE that lacks in extra content.

In conclusion, what is there left to say except that this series should have ended after the first four games. It has been dragged out and overdone to the point that the series is, IMHO, causing more harm than good to this once excellent development team’s reputation as a leader in gaming. Gone is the originality and creativity that once was the Puppet Show series. The believability in the game ended when I had to save the life of a wounded guard who was very kind to help me in the beginning of the game. As he was bleeding and struggling to breathe I had to find all sorts of silly little items and then found that I had to release the doctor before we could help the guard. In order to release the doctor I had to go through another set of mundane and idiotic tasks before he could get on with the business of saving the guard. It is just crazy the way the game is put together and I kept thinking – really? Please, please, please Bunny Team, say farewell to this series and put your talent to work on other projects – perhaps something new rather than these over-used puppet series. I happen to love most of your games so reach inside and find the great creativity that was once shown in your masterpiece games. As for me, I won’t be buying Bloody Rosie – not with a sale or even as an SE with a PCC. For other gamers out there, please try the demo before you hit that buy button because you will probably either love it or hate it.
I don't recommend this game.

Haunted Train Clashing Worlds is the third game in this wonderful series. I own the other two and it is one of those games where the developer takes its time before the next chapter is delivered. It has been well over a year since the previous game Frozen in Time was released in May of 2015. Prepare yourself for another awesome ride on the Haunted Train with Charon, Daniel, and Olivia. Daniel’s wife Olivia had been restored to life by Charon in a previous game and in return Daniel agreed to travel with Charon as he seeks to recapture the condemned evil souls who had somehow managed to escape from Charon’s prison.
As the game begins, Charon is having a nightmare and knows that Olivia is in danger. A rift between time and space has occurred in Amsterdam and Charon sees Olivia and the Amsterdam Museum in flames. Charon has seen this rift before – one that is caused by inhabitants of Shadowland a world that is dying. Professor Alazar of Omega University in Shadowland has devised a plan where he will open a rift that will allow the beings in Shadowland to cross and inhabit the lives of people living on Earth – this time the rift is in 1915 Amsterdam. You, playing the game as Daniel will help Charon save Olivia but when Charon is captured it looks like you are on your own.
When the game first started I wasn’t too sure about the cartoonish graphics but the dream segment graphics soon changed into the excellent graphics that we have in the other Haunted Train games.
Tools include a protective Amulet of Eternal Tranquility that you receive from Charon early in the game. The amulet can help you heal the rifts that you encounter and put a stop to their destructive power. You also have an interactive map that is present at the beginning of the game.
Clashing Worlds contains some very innovative HOP scenes and I enjoyed “puzzling” my way through them. It took me a bit of time to understand how the different types of scenes work and what it was I needed to do to allow me to proceed. What great fun! Then there are the mini-games or puzzles that are different and very good. Some are challenging and others not so much. As a whole there seem to be more HOPS than there are mini-games but since the HOPS are so well-designed it is okay with me.

The CE version of the game includes collectible Omega signs to find, morphing objects called Pearls, can be found in the HOPS, there are achievements, a Strategy Guide, a bonus chapter, Concept Art, Wallpapers, and Music. There is really not much to rave about with the extras but at least the in-game Strategy Guide is helpful if needed.
I love this game and am enjoying it even more than I did the previous game in the series, Frozen in Time. Some might feel that the game is HOP heavy but I love the genre – always have, and probably always will. I found the demo time flew by and before I knew it I was hitting the buy button. Please try the demo to see if Clashing Worlds is one you will enjoy as well.
I recommend this game!

fromEve is really in a mess this time! Maybe she should give up on black holes.
You might want to think twice before you pick up what you think of as a family relic or heirloom because you might never know where it will take you and in this case you could just happen to be whisked away through a portal to another world. As usual, at least in the more recent Amaranthine Voyage games, you play as Eve Glover so it really shouldn’t be a surprise when you encounter an alien capsule in your swimming pool. Almost immediately you step through a portal and into the world of Arden where you find out more about your recently departed grandfather than you ever thought possible.
This developer has almost always presented games with excellent and crisp graphics but unfortunately Legacy of the Guardians isn’t one of them. The graphics seem to be a mixed bag of the original old style with lots of mistiness and then at other times we have crisp and clear scenes. It is my feeling that perhaps the developer was trying to emulate the graphics of the first two games in the series. Aside from the graphics we have voiceovers that are also not too great. Some are very stilted and I felt like I wanted to poke the speaker to wake him up so he could move on.
Where this game becomes excellent, at least for me, is with the puzzles that are quite different than usual and challenging. I have loved spending time solving them. The HOP scenes were varied, with some being interactive and multi-level. There is one HOP that is very different as we move from one room to another to find the objects we need. Even with graphics that are not quite up to par, the puzzles and HOP scenes override that shortcoming. I started playing the game yesterday and am still not quite finished.
The CE version does offer a few extras with collectibles that are sometimes difficult to find. Unfortunately, even though I did purchase the game, the extras are probably not worth the extra cost. Where the CE always becomes a great value is with the in-game Strategy Guide that can be very helpful if one is stuck and needs a bit of help.
The Amaranthine Voyage series is one that for me has been either hit or miss. The original early games in the series were very good but some of the later games have really not been that great. Of the newer games, Winter Neverending is one of the better ones. Although the game is not stellar in some respects, the puzzles and HOP scenes make it one that I believe deserves a high rating. Even though I purchased the game, please try the demo to see if you will find that Legacy of the Guardians is one you will enjoy.
I recommend this game!

Hello again detective – how else could you play a HOPA game? Well, after solving your last case you have been given a well-earned vacation: a voyage at sea to relax you upon the gently rolling waves. However your vacation soon goes awry as you are shipwrecked by a freak storm and find yourself fighting for your survival. Immediately after your shipwreck, you find you must save a young Frenchman who was a member of the crew. Unfortunately, Noel, will tag along with you on the journey. I’m not sure if he is a helper or a hindrance but he does seem rather useless. The story deepens as you enter a town possessed and find yourself confronting a frightening mystery. Will you be able to find the answers you need to save yourself and Noel, in Song of Sorrows?
The graphics although colorful are not that good early in the game and appear misty to a fault and almost blurry. They also appear rather old-school and have none of the crispness that I prefer in games. The voiceovers are good but the soundtrack is rather annoying and I found I had to turn the music volume very low but it still was a bit much. Your tools include an interactive map and an amulet to ward off possessed villagers and other evils.
The HOPS are interesting but my favorite is the standard list type. I don’t care too much for the scenes that are more puzzle-like even though they are quite creative. Thankfully, the developer has included an alternate match 3 game in some of the HOPS. The puzzles lack in imagination and are very much the same as what we always come across in HOPA games, but in all fairness to the developer, that is rather par for the course.
If you prefer the CE version of games this one seems quite good with a bonus chapter and then another chapter that will open after all of the collectible gems in the game are found so keep your eyes open. The remainder of the package includes the Strategy Guide, HOPS, Mini-games, Music, Movies, Wallpapers, and a Workshop (Concept artwork).
Honestly, I really couldn’t get into the game because it simply didn’t grab me. I felt the progress in the game was bogged down with too many senseless tasks to complete before really getting into the “meat” of the storyline and gameplay. Sometimes I have bad days where games don’t appeal to me and this might be one. I have enjoyed every game in the Whispered Secrets series so I imagine on another day my feeling about the game might be different. On this particular day, I think I will need to pass on Song of Sorrow because it didn’t seem like a game I will enjoy. This developer usually delivers an excellent game with great gameplay so please try the demo because Song of Sorrow might be just the game for you!
I recommend this game!

Tales, and yes even games, about the dreaded Bluebeard fill library shelves and today’s game is yet another about the fictional, demented and evil Count who left a string of dead wives in his wake. As games of Bluebeard go, this one is actually well done and quite an excellent game.
As the game begins Count Bluebeard has set his sights on his next wife, one he hopes will give him an heir that does not become a monster. He uses dark magic to find the purest soul in the kingdom and chooses the beautiful and kind Rachel. The only problem is Rachel loves Richard, a young man who hopes to become a doctor and one who has no fortune. Bluebeard has been sending Rachel many marriage proposals but she has somehow managed until now to avoid him. Running out of patience, Bluebeard breaks into Rachel’s home and threatens to kill Richard and it is then that Rachel agrees to marry the Count if he will spare Richard’s life. With Richard imprisoned things are looking very desperate for the young lovers. As is the case with all of the Dark Romance games you will play both characters – alternating between them to save the day.
The game’s graphics are excellent, clear, and colorful. The game offers a custom mode but there is really very little to do with it aside from setting your hint and skip times. Your tools include an interactive map that is found early in the game.
The HOPS are well-designed and items are fairly easy to find. I love the interactive scenes where it is a bit difficult to figure out what items must be used and where. If you don’t want to bother hunting for items or figuring out the interactivity, you can switch to an alternate match 3 game. Now, where I think Curse of Bluebeard becomes excellent is with the puzzles. There are a lot of puzzles in the game with varying levels of difficulty. Something I enjoy is that we have the option with almost all of the puzzles to select between the easy or hard mode when solving them.
If you would prefer the CE version of the game it includes collectibles, morphing objects, achievements, bonus chapter, strategy guide, wallpapers, concept art, music, Book of Spells, Boudoir, and replay of 24 puzzles. Since there are several types of collectibles to find along with the morphing objects, for me this is a great CE package.
After so many morbid and bloody games during October,(awful storylines) I had been waiting for a game I actually wanted to play and Dark Romance Curse of Bluebeard was perfect. Even though the basic theme is a bit dark I love the way the game is designed and the story is told. It is always fun switch between the two characters as I move through the Dark Romance games which add a new dimension to the gameplay. I had been waiting for the game to be released and it was be an instant buy for me. As always, even though I love the game please try the demo to see if it will be a game that you will enjoy.
I recommend this game!

In Chimeras: Mortal Medicine you play the game as a detective who has been asked to investigate a mysterious illness that has fallen upon the children in the town of Ronas. The town’s doctor created a vaccine that took the life of his daughter and now he is accused of murder and faces the executioner’s axe. It seems the illness started when a dark stranger visited Ronas but he has disappeared. Now detective, you must not only find the stranger who might be the cause of the epidemic, but you must prove the innocence of the doctor as well.
Chimeras Mortal Medicine is game number four in the series. I absolutely loved the first game Tune of Revenge and had high hopes for the subsequent games but some were a disappointment. At least for me, Mortal Medicine is better than the previous game in the series and although it is still early in the game, I am enjoying the HOPS, puzzles and storyline.
The game offers four modes of gameplay – Casual, Detective, Super, and Custom. Hints and skips can be set in a range of 15 – 90 seconds. I would suggest turning off the sparkles in the custom mode because more seasoned gamers will hate having huge areas of sparkles all over each screen. Your tools include an integrated transporter type map that is quite helpful.
I find the HOPS to be enjoyable mainly because list types have always been my favorite. Although the HOPS are varied in type, I am not fond of the silhouette scenes. The puzzles, although on the easy side, are quite fun and I find them enjoyable.
If you prefer the CE version of games Mortal Medicine has collectibles that include puzzle pieces, cards, and morphing objects to find throughout the game. The standard fare includes 16 wallpapers, 12 concept art, screensavers that will be created by the puzzle pieces, 5 music tracks, an album created by the cards, a secret room, bonus chapter, a 45 page strategy guide, and let’s not forget those achievements that are earned aw we play. All in all, Mortal Medicine offers a nice CE package.
As I mentioned above, when the first Chimeras game Tune of Revenge was released it was an amazing game. I still remember the opening of the game and the tune that stuck in my mind for days after playing. Tune of Revenge is absolutely excellent and I highly recommend it to newer gamers who may not have tried it. So now here we are a few years after that first game and I wonder what has happened to the series with the subsequent games that could not compare to the original. Although Mortal Medicine is a high quality, five-star game, it still doesn’t have that extra spark of something that stands out. Even though it might not compare to Tune of Revenge, IMHO, it is much better than the past two games. I am enjoying the gameplay and the HOPS that pop up along the way. I also like it that sometimes I have to do something that will unlock the HOP scenes before they can be played. Mortal Medicine was an instant buy for me but I do recommend that you try the demo to see if you will enjoy the game.
I recommend this game!
