The Forgotten Fairy Tales Canvases of Time is the second game in the series; the first game is The Spectra World. When that game was released I had such an adverse reaction that I gave the game only 1-star and wrote a less than complimentary review. The second game Canvases of Time is not much better than the first and I find it to be a very sloppy game. The use of live actors for the characters does nothing for the game and the voiceovers are very poor. That being said and because there was a sale today I decided to take the plunge and purchase the game so that I could write a review on more than only the demo.
I have played a few hours of the Canvases of Time and it simply doesn’t gain in appeal whatsoever. The game is yawn worthy and quite boring. I love Elefun, or at least I did in the “old” days before developers starting creating one after another of what I refer to as cookie-cutter games - not my term but one that another gamer used about three years ago and it is perfect to describe most of the games being funneled through BFG these days. Every once in a while we have a creative and excellent game but more often than not the games are simply not the same quality. I’ve written several reviews where I have given my ideas on why the games are now the way they are but it doesn’t really make any difference. The large gaming studios seem to recycle their graphics, characters, storylines, HOPS and Puzzles from one game to another - maybe they hope that we won't notice. Since Forgotten Fairy Tales is a new series there is not quite as much recycling but that fact does not increase the appeal of the game.
The HOPS seem to be mostly the storybook style and they are so easy it takes no thought to complete the scenes. The items to be found are mostly right in your face with no attempt to make them more challenging in any way. I didn’t find that many puzzles in the game or perhaps they were simply so easy I just moved right over them thinking they were part of the HOPS or regular gameplay.
The CE has the yada, yada, yada boring collectibles with nothing exceptional whatsoever so there is no need to really comment on them.
In the end The Forgotten Fairy Tales Canvases of Time is such a boring and unremarkable game that there is not much more to say. I love this developer or at least I did at one time but they are no longer the same nor do they create the masterpieces that they once did in series such as Fear for Sale. Nightmare Cinemas is still one of my favorite games so it is sad to see what is now being produced by Elefun. I did purchase the game with the hope that it would improve after the demo but that was a huge mistake. Even though I didn’t care for the game, you might want to try the demo because you might have a totally different reaction. Happy gaming!
I don't recommend this game.

Dark Romance Winter Lily is game number eight in the series. Winter Lily is loosely based on the story of Snow White and is told through the eyes of the two main characters Lily, the Princess of Winterhelm, and William the King of Lanceya.
Wicked Queen Nivella is having another meeting with her famous mirror wondering what it will take to stop her aging curse so that she can gain eternal youth. The Mirror tells the queen that only the purest heart can break the curse and make her eternally young. Thus starts another of the wonderful Dark Romance games. I could go more into the storyline but I think most of us are familiar with the tale of Snow White but what makes these games so much fun is the viewing of the story as it unfolds and is told by each of the main characters in turn. This is a beautiful game and one that I’ve been waiting to play. I love the fairy tale types of games as most of them are not at dark as some recent games, however, the developer does have a go at adding some darkness to this tale.
I love this game and the storyline that has me enjoying each new character I meet along the way. Well, the fairy might be an exception with her high-pitched, squeaky voice that I truly find grating. I think one of my favorite characters is Prospero the alchemist.
If you play a lot of Domini games then you will know there is really nothing different to be found in the HOPS. We have the now expected variety with storybook, silhouette, and list types included. Even with nothing new, the HOPS are fun and the items are not so small that I want to rip my eyelashes off as I look through a magnifier to spot them. The puzzles are fun and mostly easy even on the “Hard” setting. The puzzles include a lot of my favorite ones but with 18 of them in the game I am not going to list them. A couple of other reviewers do an excellent job of providing that information for you. As much as I appreciate what they do, I happen to love surprises and would rather figure it all out as I go along and then do a happy dance when I find a puzzle I really like.
If you prefer the Collector’s Edition of a game, this one includes various collectibles including Dwarven Artifacts to store in the Dwarven Museum, Chess, Pieces to complete a chessboard, and Lilies that can be used to buy items decorate your Royal Chambers. There are 32 Achievements to earn as well. Other extras include the ability to replay 18 Mini-games and 18 HOPS. There are 15 Wallpapers, Concept Artwork, Music, and Movies. There is a Bonus Chapter and a 54-page Strategy Guide. IMHO, this developer provides excellent value in their CE games with lots of collectibles and other extras to keep us happy.
Winter Lily is a wonderful, different and version of the Snow White tale that I have read countless times since childhood. The Dark Romance is a favorite series of mine but there were two games that I really didn’t like all that much. As it stands right now Winter Lily might just be my favorite. Yes I know that many of you will think the game is cookie-cutter but realistically most HOPA and TM games are just that. I happen to be a game addict and it doesn’t bother me overmuch that most games follow a set pattern. In this case the gameplay is fun, the HOPS terrific, and the puzzles fun so I don’t mind the pattern. Even though I believe that Winter Lily is an excellent addition to the Dark Romance series, please try the demo to see if it is a game you will enjoy as well. Happy gaming!
I recommend this game!

There has been an attack at the local police station and Detective Duncan has called on you for assistance because of your renown in solving supernatural crimes. When you arrive at the scene everything is in shambles and several officers reported that the attacker had superhuman strength and speed, so Duncan thinks that you might be the right person to solve this case.
I enjoy the graphics from Mariaglorum, and many of my favorite games come from their development team. In the Black Dagger the graphics are realistic and colorful so I am happy. The voiceovers and sound package in general are excellent as well and suit the game perfectly. Another think I enjoy in this game is the true custom setting where I can make my hint and skip times as low or as high as I want. I happen to be a bit impatient so being able to set a very low time suits me perfectly.
There are some absolutely terrific HOPS early in the game at least and I think my favorite is one that has several mini puzzles included. The HOPS are very creative and it looks like all of them are interactive including the list style. The regular Puzzles are excellent, although some might think they are easy. Even though the puzzles might seem easy there were some that I found challenging. I do enjoy puzzles but sometimes I don’t particularly care for the motion type where we must trace lines with our mouse or toggle this n’ that to open something or another. This game doesn’t seem to have too many of that type of puzzle – thankfully, at least in the game’s demo.
The CE version of the game includes 8 Character Statuettes and 23 Crowns to find. There are also the ever present achievements to earn. The other extras are 18 Wallpapers, 30 Concept Art, Music, 8 Videos, a Bonus Chapter and a 40-page Strategy Guide. The downfall in the CE is that it doesn’t look like there are morphing objects nor can we replay the HOPS or Puzzles.
Although the game has an evil entity I love the modern day mystery concept so it isn’t quite as bad. I have said before that I definitely would like to get away from the evil being theme that seems to permeate the game world but I wonder if that will ever happen. Lately we have had a few games that are strictly crime solving games and I have found them quite refreshing. Why can’t we have great mysteries like the old Agatha Christy games instead of some dark entity seeking to wreak havoc on some unsuspecting souls? That being said I love this game in spite of the ancient evil character mostly because of the gameplay and the interesting storyline. Having very creative HOPS and then Puzzles increase my enjoyment as I follow the mystery behind the Black Dagger. Mariaglorum creates some awesome games such as the League of Light series and Bonfire Stories that I highly recommend. After playing the beta for the game some months ago I have been eagerly awaiting the full release of the CE. Even though I purchased the game as soon as it was released, I always recommend that you try the demo to see if this is a game you will enjoy. Happy gaming!

In another Hidden Expedition game you are back as an agent of the HELP organization. Your holiday in Switzerland has been interrupted as you have been called upon by the agency to find a very special long-lost artifact that will point to the very origins of HELP. Start your journey at a Geneva auction house as you win the artifact only to have it wrenched from your hands. Now you are off on a globetrotting adventure as you seek to recover the treasure.
After the disastrous EIPIX game earlier this week I had my doubts about even trying the demo for The Golden Secret but in the end it seems like all is not lost and this developer still has what it takes to present an excellent game. This is one of the most exciting HE games to be released in recent years and it is so much better than the last one, even though I did enjoy HE The Curse of Mithridates and can recommend that game as well.
Although the HOPS and Puzzles are typical EIPIX I felt they were much better than those in some recent games. I happen to enjoy most of the HOPS from this developer even those where we must find items in the storybook type scenes. Some of the puzzles seemed to be a notch up from the last game and some even have a higher level of challenge.
If you prefer the CE version of a game this one includes 14 HOPS, 17 Puzzles, 36 Fact Cards to find, as well as Morphing Objects, and Achievements to earn. The other extras include 9 Character Art, 8 Pictures or Wallpapers, 9 Videos, Music, a Souvenir Room, Bonus Chapter, and the Strategy Guide.
In the end this game is so much fun and as I noted earlier one of the best HE games in recent years. I thoroughly enjoyed the game after the seemingly slow start at the auction house. Fortunately, the game picks up speed and my interest level rose with the action. It is good to see that EIPIX still has what it takes to create an interesting and enjoyable game. I purchased the game halfway through the demo and I am so happy to add the Golden Secret to my collection. There has only been one other game since the year began that I found really worthwhile and hopefully the trend will continue with CE games bringing a bit more to the table. Even though I find this a fun and entertaining game, please try the demo to see if this is one you will enjoy. Happy gaming!

The latest Myths of the World game begins with your husband rowing a small boat as you make your way to a market in a nearby town on an island in the Rhine. As the boat begins to sink, so does the game. Perhaps it might have been better if this uninspired, cookie-cutter game had gone down with the ship as I had a very difficult time moving forward with the game which is based on the legend of the Lorelei who lured unsuspecting sailors to their doom.
The game has its moments with some lovely graphics but lately I find that gorgeous scenes are no longer enough to hold my attention when playing a HOPA game. This is the first game ever where I turned off the music because it is so annoying. Not only is the music annoying it simply doesn’t fit the game’s theme or art style. It is as if this developer did everything it could to sabotage this game for one reason or another. Perhaps they are tired of the casual game market or want to move to creating the wham-bam fast games for other OS platforms aside from PC or Mac. Whatever the reason, IMHO, this game is an absolute disaster and it shouts that the developer didn’t care enough to put the energy into creating a good story or an interesting game.
Love Beyond is simply another of the now all too familiar cookie-cutter games with a blueprint of three active spots in each scene where we must find bits and pieces of items that will then allow us to progress to the next scene where we find yet another three active areas (sometimes less). Unfortunately this pattern continues until we finally make our way to the end where hopefully we have had time to understand the story that goes with the game if we haven’t succumbed to boredom along the way.
If you are still interested, the game has the standard recycled HOPS that we have seen before where we must search through dusty closets or other similar junkpiles to find an item that we will need to move onto another scene in the game. Once we find our prize then we can continue on to the next scene where we will find more bits and pieces to continue our journey. If the HOPS in the game are not enough to keep you entertained, there are also the obligatory easy and uninteresting puzzles thrown in for good measure.

Given my negative review you would think that I didn’t purchase the game but I did hoping to like the game and wanting to give it a fair shot. However, I never could get into the game and found it so ho-hum boring with very little to grab my attention. Sometimes it looks like the death knell is ringing for those of us who love inspired, creative, and challenging HOPA games and what is worse is that an excellent developer like EIPIX is leading the charge. It is sad to see a developer who once produced such inspired games tumble down the slippery slope that is the cookie-cutter blueprint set forth by the Big Fish itself. How did this happen? Did we the addicted HOPA gamer actually start the decline with our voracious appetites for new CE games or was it the failing economy that created the “buy only on sale” mentality of gamers. Basically if most of us only purchase CEs at a sale price it would seem logical that developers would cut their efforts to fit that price point. My theory is that until gamers are willing to pay full-price for CEs the developers won’t be incentivized to create better games. Although it is quite obvious that I don’t care for this game, please try the demo because it might be perfect for you. Happy gaming!
I don't recommend this game.

Medium Detective comes to us from a developer that has created some very good games such as the Tales of Terror and Haunted Train series and Fright from the Past might be the first entry into a new mystery series from this developer. If you have enjoyed their other games, you will probably enjoy this new whodunit game. A word of warning to all of you game purists who look at every nut and bolt in a game – be prepared for a bit of time-shock as you will probably go nuts because of all the anachronisms. Some are very obvious such as Detective Pine’s flashy automobile rather than a horse-drawn carriage or Claire’s rather modern wardrobe, while others are a bit more subtle. Just remember that in BFG game land all things are possible!
In Fright from the Past you play the game as Claire Arlington a Police Special Consultant who uses her gift to see things that others don’t. Detective Pine who was the partner of your late father has called on you to help investigate what he believes is the murder of a young woman whose death was ruled as natural by the coroner. Detective Pine has reason to suspect that she and others might be the victims of an elusive and legendary criminal called the Man of Shadows. Using your special talents will you and Detective Pine be able to solve the murders and put an end to his reign of terror?
The hand-drawn artwork used to create the characters is excellent and with good voiceovers the characters seem life like. The game offers a custom setting that I appreciate because I can set my hint and skip times as low as I want. Many developers offer the custom setting but they dictate what the hint and skip time range should be without allowing the gamer to choose their own range. Yes, I am impatient and I hate waiting for the hint button to recharge when I want to move forward in the game – so thank you Deep Shadows for allowing me to set my own hint and skip times. There is the standard transporter type map included with the game but there is a tool that some might consider a gimmick but it is useful. Claire’s gift as a medium is activated by a special amulet but you won’t need to play a puzzle to use it.
I enjoyed the creative HOPS in Medium Detective where there are different styles used and all of them are well-designed. If you have played other games from this developer then you might be familiar with the inclusion of at least one morphing object in most scenes. The puzzles are easy, at least early in the game, which is terrific for those of you who are not fans of all the puzzles or mini-games now popping up in HOPA games. My BIG complaint is that there are no instructions for the puzzles although some don’t need them and are easy to figure out. However, I think there are some puzzles that should have instructions and the lack of them is why I will not rate the game higher.
The CE version of the game includes Morphing Objects and Collectible Signs or Symbols to find, along with Achievements to earn. The remainder of the CE package includes the standard fare such as Wallpapers, Concept Art, Music, Videos, a Bonus Game and the Strategy Guide. The CE is very light on extras so this would be a good game to purchase as a SE or by using one of your PCCs.
If you read my reviews you know by now that I dislike games based on the theme of evil, smoky, demonic type entities. HOWEVER, since I do like games from this developer and the Man of Shadows is only bent on revenge and not seeking to take over souls or world dominion, it doesn’t bother me quite as much and I will probably buy the game. In spite of some of its shortcomings Fright from the Past is a good police mystery game and is worth playing and it is one that I recommend. Even though I think that Medium Detective Fright from the Past is a good game, please try the demo to see if it is right for you. Happy gaming!

It is hard to believe that Puppet Show the Curse of Ophelia is game number 13 in the Puppet Show series. Before trying the demo I was actually ready to hate the game simply because I am so done with the series in general. After all, aside from the first original storyline games the others have been duds. I’ve been surprised that the series didn’t fold long ago but we all know that BFG is infatuated with serial games and does seem quite reluctant to move in new directions. At any rate aside from the high-pitched squeaky voices of our leading ladies, the game is much better than I anticipated and I will definitely be buying this one. Not only did I enjoy the demo, I was left wanting more when it ended – a very good sign that I will enjoy the full game.
I’m not going to spend much time going into the storyline because you will hear that from others but I will only say that you again play a detective and you are off again to help a friend in need. In this case your friend has become ill since her starring role in the theater production of Ophelia. It is said that there is a curse on the role and that seems like it might be true. Will you be able to help Leroy save his wife before the curse claims her?
The graphics in the game are pure AMAX/ERS with gorgeous artwork graphics. Now, if only the voices were as wonderful as the graphics it would be awesome. However, listening to Angela and Beatrice is like the proverbial fingernails on the chalkboard – simply grating!
The HOPS and puzzles hold no surprises but I still happen to enjoy the HOPS from the AMAX team. The puzzles are not difficult and I seemed to breeze through them quite easily. We all know to expect at least one or two hair-pulling mini-games after the demo so I am sure that I might get stuck later and need to resort to the SG.
The CE version of the game is quite an improvement from what we normally find in CE games from this development team. There are two types of collectibles to find but I like the flowers the most since we will learn more about them later in the extras section. We have achievements to earn and most of the other standard extra fluff but I am really impressed that AMAX has finally included the option to replay the HOPS and Mini-games that, IMHO, increase the value of any CE game. There are 11 Mini-games and 19 HOPS to replay in the extras section. It looks like there are almost twice as many HOPS as Mini-games so those of you who don’t care that much for puzzles should be happy. Other extras include 7 Wallpapers, 16 Concept Art, 5 Screensavers, and 4 Music Tracks. As always you will find the Bonus Chapter and the in-game Strategy Guide.
Since becoming a member at BFG it is fair to say that I have played a ton of HOPA games. I’ve used the term cookie-cutter quite frequently because the games all seem to follow a set pattern. But to be honest even though I use that term frequently, it doesn’t mean that I still can’t find something to enjoy about most HOPA games. I am a hopeless HOPA game addict and playing them is my favorite form of entertainment no matter how many lost zipper pulls I must find or wires I need to tape together. Even though I know I will enjoy this game, please try the demo to see if Puppet Show Curse of Ophelia is one you will enjoy as well. Happy gaming!

Sometimes a vacation turns out to be a bit more than you expected and this one ends up being a three-in-one package. You are on vacation with your best friend when what seems to be a rather boring and uneventful trip suddenly changes into one that might just be the last vacation you ever have. While exploring Delphi your friend Christine sees a stone that appears to have something shining behind it. Of course curiosity gets the better of both of you and that is when the excitement begins. I love the Labyrinths of the World series and, IMHO, this might be the best game of the series to-date. The storyline is excellent and creative with beautiful graphics that bring the three worlds to life. Loving fairy tale type games this game has it all for me with elves, dragons, and trolls.
Over the years I have played probably 900 HOPA games and it has become very apparent in the past few years that BFG has set out the basics that each developer should follow such as how many puzzles or HOPS there will be in each game. How many “hot spots” in each scene, what variety there should be in the HOPS, and approximately how many scenes there should be in each game. That format is why so many gamers refer to the HOPA games as being cookie-cutter. When you get right down to it, almost all HOPA games and even TM games are very much cookie-cutter games. That being said, Domini is a developer who makes their HOPS fun and their mini-games a bit more challenging. The graphics in their games are saturated with intense color and their storylines are for the most part quite excellent. This Labyrinths game, A Dangerous Game, is one of the most interesting and different storylines that I have seen in quite some time. This game shows that it is possible to have a very fun and interesting game where there is no vile, dark, evil entity lurking at every turn trying to steal my soul. It is refreshing to see a game that has such a different story that gives me the feeling that I am in a Tolkein novel as I play the game. Congrats to Domini for creating a fabulous game with elves, dragons, and trolls - especially the dragons since I love and collect them.
The HOPS are what we would expect but they are done well with a lot of creativity. Many items in the scenes require some interaction with other items that are sometimes not in plain sight and once found they are used within the scene. The puzzles are excellent and although most are familiar, I did come across one at least that I don’t remember playing in quite some time. I believe that Domini is the first developer who started offering a choice of easy or hard when it comes to solving the puzzles and even though I have played numerous puzzles in HOPA games, I found that I did need to select the easy mode when I tried to solve two of them in the demo for this game.
Labyrinths of the World: A Dangerous Game CE has lots of extras to find including Collectible Cards, Artifacts and Gold Nuggets. Yes there are lots of Achievements to earn if that is your thing. I think that this developer is one of the first that also offered a replay of HOPS and Puzzles in their games and we can do that in the CE version of the game as well. Then there is the usual fluff that is found in all CE games such as Wallpapers, Concept Art, Music, and Videos
There is also a Personal Room that we can furnish using those Gold Nuggets that we find throughout the games. All CE games also include a Strategy Guide Bonus Chapter.
A Dangerous Game is the seventh game in the Labyrinths of the World series and it is an excellent way to start off 2018. Hopefully, we will see more games like this one and far fewer of the ones with evil demons hoping to take over some unsuspecting person who will become the vehicle for world dominion or some other such purpose. Domini nailed this storyline and created an awesome game that will be one of my all-time favorite games. Even though I love this game and highly recommend it, please try the demo to see if you will enjoy it as well. Happy Gaming!

Shadowplay The Forsaken Island is an incredibly good game. I found the storyline different (thankfully) and, not only is it good, it is well-told. The game is sort of a sci-fi, futuristic game where we have a look at a possible apocalyptic scenario when scientific research gets a bit out of control.
Everything about this game is perfect for me with realistic characters and dialogue. The dialogue is not filled with mistakes and it looks like someone took the time to make sure that the final product was worthwhile. Because I loved the beta for the game, I purchased it a full price because I can’t wait for a sale to get my hands on this game. There have been so many disappointing HOPA CE games since mid-2017 and it is refreshing to see a game that is actually excellent in so many ways. This game hits the target in all areas for me so it feels like 5-stars aren’t really enough.
The HOPS are excellent and varied with some new styles included among the very creative scenes. The storybook types are okay but those are rather comic book in style. There is one HOP that had me scratching my head because I felt like it was more of a puzzle than a HOP but I finally got going and it did make sense to be classified as a HOP scene. The puzzles are really very easy and perhaps will be too easy for many expert gamers. If you play a lot of HOPA games I am sure that you have already seen the puzzles before and they will be easy for you too.
The CE bling is fairly standard with nothing outstanding in the package. What attracted me most was simply the storyline and I couldn’t wait another month until the SE release to play the full game. In this CE package we have morphing objects and the standard collectible Mad Head Logo. Most value comes with the in-game Strategy Guide and having that bonus chapter.
Even though you know by now that I love the game and immediately purchased it, I always recommend that you try the demo to see if Shadowplay The Forsaken Island is a game you will enjoy. Happy gaming!
I recommend this game!

Donna is on her way to see her school friend Kathi who has contacted her with an urgent plea for help. Kathi received a plant for her birthday that has turned her house into a living nightmare and only the petals of the flower that Kathi sent with her message can save people from death. After a brief chat when you arrived Kathi is grabbed by tree roots that appear and whisk her away as she screams for your help, which is probably the most action you will see in this game.
I am shocked; absolutely shocked that Mad Head would put their name on this bottom-of-the-barrel game. The first thing I noticed was the lack of lip movement when a character speaks. Yes there are voice overs but the characters stand there staring while the dialog is read. Yes, I have come to expect lip-sync in games and the lack of it shouldn’t be a deal-breaker but this is a game from a top developer who should realize that gamers have come to expect more from them. Sadly, I was so put off by the presentation of the game that I found it difficult to concentrate and stay involved. Perhaps this developer will go back to its roots and put more time and effort into creating the games that are worthy of having the Mad Head name on them.
In the end I found the game so boring that I couldn’t complete the demo – something that rarely happens because I generally love HOPA games. Mad Head has created some excellent and very creative games and, IMHO, Donna Brave and the Deathly Tree is definitely not one of them. As always I recommend that you try the demo to see if this game might be one you will enjoy. We all have differing tastes in games so the Deathly Tree might be perfect for you. Unfortunately, this is not a game that I can recommend. Happy gaming!
I don't recommend this game.
