This review is based on high hopes, an immediate buy when I saw the SE version available and 3 hours of game play.
I thought my weekend was made when I saw the SE version come up yesterday and full of excitement started to play last night ... and got more and more bored as longer I played.
Sure, the cut-scenes are wonderful and the graphics are good. But if that's all then I might as well watch a good movie. The game isn't atmosheric at all, it doesn't suck you in where you cant wait to see what happens next. It's totally linear. You need a ladder, and the HO next will provide it. And then the attempt at atmosphere that's just simply stupid. Like a cut-scene interrupts your meanderings where the girl shouts for help from a balcony and throws down a dagger at your feet as she is dragged away. Cut-scene finished and you look down at your feet and go "ohhh, there's something hidden in the snow, hush, whatever could that be? I might just want to investigate perhaps. WOW, who would have thought, it's a dagger" = hellooo!
The hidden object scenes are neat in the way they offer a couple of interactive items, but the rest is just soo old hat, where many other developers have finally already gotten beyond the 5xScissors, etc junk pile setup, this is repeatitive and boring. The puzzles I've come across this far where the only semi highlight, but I wouldn't rave yet on that account either.
So overall a mediocre attempt, specifically with raising such high hopes after the other's in the series. The developer hasn't gone beyond what's been done before #even the actress is the same as in prior games down to the hat she wears#. The worst for me is that there's no vibe, no atmosphere, no tention, just walk there, do the HO, get the item to get you through the next locked door, etc - disappointing.
If you've enjoyed the other games in this series and are keen, make sure to do the trial first before you get excited and dish out good money. I wished I'd have done that and then waited for a Daily Deal on this one.
I don't recommend this game.

Wow, this was unexpectatly great on all counts and kept getting better throughout. The end was a bit too quick and without an explanation where Michael all of a sudden came from. No matter, this is one major fantastic (literally) game and other developers should check it out for how to do it right.
What really obviously set it apart from the rest is the sifi storyline. And it was so very well done and kept my interest to go on and on the whole time.
When it finished I was real sad and wondered if a sequel would be possible, but I don't think so, as the end was so rounded without leaving much to wonder about. Perhaps the adventures on the new planet? Nae, nothing can compare to the way this was woven together and fitted with the egyptian history and the atlantis fairy tales.
Thank you for some wonderfully immersive hours of enjoyment.
I recommend this game!

When I first looked at this game it seemed tedious and coming across the first "bubble shapes" HO type scene I immediately decided that this wasn't for me. Though I kept on playing seeing that it was for free during the trial period. Then I got more and more sucked in and before the trial ran out, dished out a coupon and bought it. After finishing it, there is no regret at all, it was such fun and great story and play.
It's not often that we get a storyline that's a bit different and special. Also, the dialogues where fun, not too long, very fitting and just belonged. The bubble type HO scenes, which are usually a turn-off for me, made sense when they appeared and it wasn't fragmented pieces one needed to find #my absolute pet hate#, but proper parts to put something together which then would be an item of use.
The whole vibe of the game was great and I thoroughly enjoyed it.
So if you like an intriguing story with a who-dunit plot and don't mind more adventure than HO or even prefer it, go, give this a bash, I cannot imagine you being disappointed.
I recommend this game!

There was just so much right with this game. Most of the little details fit and the bulk of it was totally enjoyable.
Let me try to count up a few of the things the developers got absolutely right.
- The HO scenes were challenging without being tedious
- The music was borderline too much but always with the theme and the background sounds were totally fitting
- Game length was good, specifically compared to some of the other 3 hour jobbies we are made to pay money for
- Graphics were very well done, even in scenes that didn't have much action or didn't get re-visited much. Overall it was a bit on the grey side, but that suited the story.
- The adventure part was challenging enough without having to run too much back and forth. Sometimes one really had to ponder what item might go where, but it was all kept sensical. At the same time it wasn't so self-solving that each item fitted somewhere right away or was totally obvious either.
- One mini gripe for me, though it didn't distract from how great this game was to play, was items in HO scenes that didn't fit the time the game played in, like a fancy camera or other tech gadgets having found their way amidst the more early 19hundreds carriages and candlesticks.
What fun I had. I played the SE and didn't find anything amiss and the ending wasn't abrupt or feeling "unfinished" like with a good number of other SEs.
If you want a relaxing weekend treat and don't mind a slightly darkish athmosphere - you just found it!
I recommend this game!

I am an old style gamer and started with the magical Myst in the early 90s - no internet, no walkthru's, just you and the wonderful world created by some outrageously talented developers, artists and scriptwriters.
Somewhere in my heart, I still long for those days when a game took weeks to complete and I completely got sucked into the atmosphere, the sounds, the characters and the storyline.
Since then there have only be a view like it here and there. Nowadays, once one gets stuck for a few minutes, off to the walkthru or strategy guide it is and a game hardly lasts longer than a weekend.
Syberia is one of the few and though it came out nearly 10 years ago, it has lost none of it's magical vibe. The story is just too wonderful and told very well, the game as a whole, with it's graphics, the music, the voices, just all of it is special and spell-binding.
As I said, it's definitly one of my top 5 adventure games of all times and I wished I wouldn't know the story, so I could play it over again and gaze in total wonder and amazement at the gorgeous sceneries that are so true you feel like you are right in it and part of it.
The puzzles/tasks flow well with the overall game, seem fitting, are challenging without being overwhelming = just right to keep your attention all the way.
This was done before anybody knew what HO stands for so no hidden object scenes, just good old fashion wonderful adventure play for hours.
I don't know how they did the splitting into different games, but the original came in two instalments. Anybody that ever even slightly liked adventure type games cannot miss this. Try it from the first one, as it needs to be played together and in sequence otherwise the story doesn't make sense.
I usually don't write reviews, but this deserves all the glory it can get. I very highly recommend this game.
Have fun on the way to Syberia!

This game was one of the few were I actually totally stopped game play to immerse myself into the scenery (at the stream on the way to the hunter's hut) it was so gorgeous and viby. There hardly was music, but mostly the sounds of the environment and those perfectly captured from chirping birds to crunching foot steps.
The evolving story line was also not as convoluted as some games seem to be these days, but interesting enough to want to know what's around the next corner.
The interactive map prevented one having to wander around if one didn't want to and the help system was very good, not giving everything away, but enough to keep one going if stuck. The only mediocre thing were the "instructions" for some of the puzzles. They were so weak and left out important parts, that I used the skip button more often than I like to do usually.
Then there is the length, which for once was absolutely great and twice I expected it to finish with the next turn to only find another twist and new landscape to work my way through = fantastic.
This is true value for money and a joy to the eye and also entertaining without being frustratingly hard or simple, all was just right to perfect.
Thanks developers, I had great fun with Grim Tales: The Legacy.
I recommend this game!

This was one of the most fun IHO I've played in a long time. The mix of HO scenes with having to search for items and to put things together or solve mini games was just right. It was a challenge all the way without ever being overwhelming nor boring. The story line flowed nicely and to judge by the end we can hope for another sequel.
This is the third installement and with every one the developer went a step further and beyond. I wonder how they can beat their own high margins, but will believe in their genius and creativity.
Also, for once, though the graphics were very real and nice, my fan didn't go wild, as often seems to be the downside of nifty graphics.
I am sure most other reviewers said more about detail aspects of this game, so all I want to add is: it was so worth the money and time = very relaxing and greatly fun. I cannot see anybody regretting giving this a try, other than if they don't like hidden object or adventure type games.
Ah, yes, and it was very atmospheric and achieved that without any creep, which other developers seem to think is a requirement for creating a vibe. It was so real that in a number of scenes I found myself wiping a little bug off my screen ;)
Some super enjoyable hours were had down here in Cape Town.
Thanks a mill to developer and BFG
