I don't write many reviews but I felt obligated in the hopes of seeing more games like this. I've been a member for well over a decade and generally buy several collector's edition games a month but have recently grown tired of the HOG offerings. This completely redeemed the drought of good games --even with--sorry to say, the new MCF. This was an especially pleasing find because I end up with many free game codes expire so I took a shot on this one.
I'll keep it short because there are much more detailed reviews but the pacing, realism, graphics and story are EXACTLY what I have been looking for lately. I don't like the overly soft fantasy look and style so this instantly drew my attention. While the story clearly has some supernatural elements the gameplay is rooted in an intelligent, real-world crime drama. The character's dialogue and actions/progression follow a real logic that is generally defied in most HOGs where the character does and says predictably dumb things to advance the "find our hero in peril" narrative. Great mix of (fun)puzzles and HOGs that keep the pacing exactly where it should be as the story required.
The two episode game was amazing surprise in something that wasn't a collector's edition and the fact that there is an overall unifying story arc means this could become a huge series. I will buy any future games in this series sight-unseen until they demonstrate otherwise.
I don't rate a lot of games but I have been buying the newest collector's edition HOGs as soon as they are released for almost a decade now. I was out of anything new to buy and this was a daily deal and the reviews were good so I took a shot.
Best decision ever.
The game is definitely a little more old school in that there aren't morphing objects, excessive side distractions, complex puzzles or a glut of obvious things you accumulate to just plug into a scene to move forward. You may not necessarily know exactly what to do next because the objects you collect are used for a logical purpose that you may haven't found yet.
The story is flat out the best story-line that I haven't found in many games. It becomes more engaging the longer you play and builds to an ending that feels like a real payoff and accomplishment. This isn't a must play for when the current releases are lacking---this is a flat out must play for HOG players.
The residents of Bitterford, Maine have fallen prey to a terrible curse. It’s up to you to unravel the series of mysterious events that led to the town’s downfall and uncover the evil that was responsible.
Tried to revisit it after leaving it after 30 mins - still bad

I realize this game is relatively old but decided to pick it back up since Bigfish is offering nothing worth playing lately. Why bring Lea Thompson to live action to such a boring and tedious game. Mystery Case Files has failed even with the newest game but this one is the ultimate definition of an albatross. I tried to finish it this time around and I realized why I abandoned something I paid money for----it's bad. Trademarking the name "Mystery Case Files" no longer has meaning.

Based on a trial and then purchase of the CE completion:
As some have said, this is like one of the adventure games that pushes you in a linear path (Nancy Drew?). I definitely agree. This game is one of my tops especially with the offerings as of late.
I am not one who likes the hazy fantasy graphics and all the typical cliches that fall into the category that seems to be ubiquitous as of late (dragons and witches and fake fairy tales) though I do buy them for lack of other options in support of developers.
That being said......This game has decent believable HO and puzzle games graphically (good for these types of games in my opinion). This is the kind of game I like where objects have a logical and realistic place. You will not be asked to shove a stick up a mermaids butt so she can give you a key to the dragon's ear so you can learn a spell that sets free a fairy. These type of games are lacking and hope to see more.
I had no intention of buying this game but selected it as an add-on to a collector's edition sale. In fact I didn't even get around to playing it until I exhausted games I actually purchased after this was downloaded into my account. This turned out to be a great game with a lot of variety and problem solving without simply running around to various scenes. I didn't give it any attention because it seemed too "fantasy" but that is far from the truth. Graphics were crisp and storyline well thought out. This gave me the longest gameplay hours without being bored of any game in a while---even the bonus chapter stood up to justifying the collector's edition price.
I recommend this game!

First let me say that I don't play many other games like this. I bought this based on ratings which I typically have done for years on BF. I found this game to be extremely boring and repetitive and I kept playing simply because I purchased the game and hate leaving purchases unfinished. You search the same levels for the sole purpose of purchasing add-ons to the mansion you are renovating. I love games that have a central build concept but it was incidental to the repetitive gameplay. It had the feel of one of the other search and build games like antique road trip but much more linear. I don't get the fanfair but this fails as a sim type builder and fails miserably as HOG.

I was surprised to see the high rating of this game since I base many of my purchases on user ratings and am rarely disappointed. I tend to prefer games that are graphically similar to real life and objects are placed realistically. This is a pure fantasy setup that uses visually interchangeable medallions, statues, awards, emblems etc and only a few identifiable items out of your inventory. The graphics are the typical hazy/ill-defined smoky look of fantasy HOGS. I generally like the Dark Parables but this one was too boring and frankly un-fun.

I rarely, if ever, submit a review for games even though I purchase many. This game is very boring and has very weak graphics. This is not a collectors editions type game and I will admit I purchase many based on the screenshots and ratings. I purchased this game on one of the sites discounts for members and found it lacking. Just my 2 cents.
