I read all of the less-than-favorable reviews for this game, and I tried it out, anyway. I then bought the game..well..used a PCC for it. It wasn't nearly as bad, for me, as many others said. The sound effect when you found an item?....Yes..that was bad...but killing the sound took care of that. Lots of dialogue? Yes...but it added to the story and moved along well. Silly DNA tests?.....Yes...but they added to the story, as well. You play a detective investigating a murder at a theater. You question all of the possible suspects and search the theater. The hidden object scenes were no problem for me, either. The graphics were fine and the scenes, for the most part, weren't overly cluttered and almost everything was pretty easy to find. If an item wasn't easy for me to see...the hint button worked just fine and refilled quickly. I liked the hint system...it grayed the room and the item in question appeared in yellow. I liked it way more than some hint systems that give you a brief flash that you miss completely because it's too short and you end up hitting the hint button over and over for one item. I didn't think any of the items were too small, either. The only thing I ran into was one item that I wasn't able to click on....it was a calculator...I could see it..partially hidden behind a can..but I couldn't seem to hit it just right with the cursor, so I left it for last, and the hint button showed it to me and I clicked on it just fine. I did find that you need to be pretty close with the cursor on hidden object items...not a lot of leeway. The puzzles and games were average, but fun, for the most part. They won't strain the little gray cells, but they aren't "see jane run" puzzles, either. All are skippable and they include types like pipe-fitting, sliders, and get the key to the lock, as well as others. Overall, it's a basic hidden object game with good hidden object scenes, a friendly hint button with a slightly annoying swirly penalty for over-clicking, horrible sounds here and there, and a fun mystery to solve. If you need a break from the dark and gory....and the games that really test you...try this one...at least try it..if I hadn't, I wouldn't have found out that the problems many encountered weren't a problem for me.
The opening scenes in this game are very well done...great voiceover, a bit of intrigue, and it makes you feel like the world will stop turning if you don't play the game and save the world as we know it. The options list is generous and provides sliders for music and sound, as well as offering a full-screen option, a cursor option, a game difficulty option, a voiceover option, and aspect correction. I find that very generous and it should provide what just about every game player would ask for. The voiceovers are good...but there is a time or two when the words you hear are not in sync with the person who is speaking..and live actors are used, which I find more engaging than the drawn ones. The hint system is helpful both in and out of hidden object scenes. The hidden object scenes are typical junkpile, with most items fairly easy to see, but a few very well hidden. The hint button recharges very quickly..about 30 seconds in the regular game mode I played in. The integrated strategy guide stays open where you left off, but goes back to the beginning once you leave the game, so you have to find where you left off every time you start the game again. That is one of the negatives for me....for the game.as long as I'm playing with the same profile, the guide should stay where I leave it when I leave the game..but this one doesn't. The puzzles/mini-games are along the line of most, with a few new twists here and there and all are skippable in about a minute. The story and gameplay move along nicely with some back and forth travel, so wear your walking shoes. There is a diary that keeps your notes, but nothing that allows you to jump from place to place...so pay attention to where you are in the game..lol..or you'll get lost like I did. Thank goodness for the strategy guide or I'd still be rambling about in the game. In the story, a much-loved teacher/mentor has summoned you to a place to help get rid of a bad guy and secure the Philosopher's Stone....with a nifty ending and decent bonus play. Overall..an engaging story, good voiceovers, good graphics and animations, fun interaction in hidden object scenes, and good length of play..for me...around 6 and 1/2 hours...but I'm a slow player..check everything out..never in a hurry. Try the game if you want a neat story and great gameplay with a few twists and turns that you just don't expect.
In a fading world devoid of color, the ghost of Nikola Tesla reaches through the Ether and invites you on an incredible adventure through time and space.
This game was, as my title says, unique and fascinating. The idea of time travel, the experience of the "butterfly effect", all of the sci-fi stuff you learned about in school...it's in this game. Of course, it's a game, and, therefore, makes up its own rules, but some of the information in the game is accurate, which adds an element of fun you don't get in some other games. In the game, it is up to you to correct a problem caused by one of your relatives..a problem that has sucked all of the color out of the world. Your relative helps you out all through the game, as you travel here and there...and in time....to fix everything that was broken. The hint system saved me in this game, as some of the game got a bit mechanical..not in gameplay..but some of the stuff you're asked to do is mechanical in nature, and I didn't understand it fully, but the hint button helped very much. Because of a helpful hint system, I didn't need to leave the game to access help outside the game, and I appreciate that in a game. I always enjoy a game a bit more if I don't have to stop, leave the game, access a walk-through, start the game..I'm sure most of you will know what I mean. The graphics in the game are wonderfully done. The scenes are bright and hidden object scenes were done well...most stuff pretty easy to see with some objects that really take some looking...but it's a hidden object game..not a "look..everything is in plain sight" game...lol. The hidden object scenes were the typical junkpile, but fairly easy to get through. Some, but not all, of the hidden object scenes had limited interaction within the scene. There is quite a lot of dialogue, but the voice-overs are quite well done, except that the character seems to keep "talking" after the words are all done...lol...but the voice-overs are clear and well-acted, and the dialogue does move the game along and adds to the enjoyment of the game, in my opinion. The puzzles/mini-games were skippable after a minute or two, and there were a couple I did skip, but most were just right on my scale of challenging...and they were fun. The ones I had difficulty with had quite a lot of numbers...and I'm horrid with puzzles with numbers...so others may have no trouble whatsoever. I did find that the instructions for puzzles weren't always clear to me, and I managed to get through them by trial and error...but..again..that is probably just me...but I felt that some of the instructions could have been better. The options menu offered the regular stuff...and was easy to navigate and was available without exiting to the main screen. I did find out that, if you leave the game without doing it "officially".....the game will start you out at the beginning of the scene you were in...not exactly where you were when you left. For example, I was working in a scene when I had to leave in a bit of a hurry, without all of the "are you sure" screens coming up...and when I started the game again, it started me out at the beginning of the scene, even though I had done a few things within the scene before leaving abruptly. You don't lose much...just a little stuff to do over if you leave abruptly. I didn't find it a problem at all. The length of the game did surprise me. At one point in the game, my "mission" was complete and off I went back to my "time"...and I really thought that would be the end of the game, but it wasn't!! There was still all kinds of things left to do, more problems to fix, more getting the best of the bad guy...so it's a definite thumbs-up for game length..I got about 6 hours or so and that's great for me for a standard edition game. I can't comment on the music, as I almost always turn music down. My only negative comment on the game concerns a couple of the lock-picking puzzles, and a "line up the parts" puzzle. The lock pick are the ones that ask the player to manipulate a lock pick and push up a column or something like it, leading to opening the lock. The two puzzles like that that I encountered were very awkward...it may have just been my mouse, but utilizing the equipment within the puzzle was very awkward for me. The "line up the parts" puzzle had me matching up some lines one a round pipe sort of thing...and I usually like those...but this one just wasn't much fun. Instead of moving in a circular pattern when you clicked on the parts, they moved in more of an elliptical pattern...hard to figure out where I needed to go when I had difficulty manipulating the sections...I got through it completely by luck..lol. All in all, I really enjoyed the game. It was bright, with good graphics, interesting puzzles, good hidden object scenes, a helpful hint system, and a compelling story with good voice-overs. I will definitely be playing this one again!
As stated in my review title, this would, in many ways, be a great game for someone who had never played a hidden object game before. It might even be a good game for a child, depending on age, as there are a few things that happen that some may not want a child to see or interact with. The options list at the beginning of the game offers visual selections, as well as the usual volume controls. I can't comment on the music, as I turned it down, but the sounds I heard during the game were fine...bells ringing, passengers talking, etc. Cut scenes were a bit like a comic book - black and white and no voice overs...they could be hurried through or skipped entirely. HIdden object scenes were bright and clear, with items pretty easy to find. The hint system was a bit troublesome in that it wouldn't last long enough to actually allow to see where it was reacting to the item being looked for. I would push the hint button, hear a brief sound, and not see a thing on the screen, especially if the object I was looking for was very near the bottom of the screen. You don't really need the hint button much outside of the hidden object scenes, as the main character usually will give an indication of where to go next. There is a map available that allows you to "jump" to the next area to explore, so you don't need to remember where everything is. You play as the assistant to an investigator who happens to be aboard the Titanic and you're asked to solve the murder of a laborer on the ship. You go from location to location while trying to solve the crime, as well as helping passengers find lost belongings. The puzzles are pretty simple and are skippable after a very short time. They include pipe-fitting puzzles and a slider puzzle or two, as well as other types. It's a pretty straight-forward hidden object game with some interaction in hidden object scenes and would be a good game for someone wanting to dip their toes in the water of hidden object games. However, the end of the game gets a bit graphic...there are "dying" statements of people trapped on the ship after it hits the iceberg..there is a shooting or two..so, if a young person is going to play, that might be a bit much for them. As for historic facts..you won't find many...it's not meant to be a documentary on the Titantic..it's a game...but there are bits of info here and there that are factual...but they are rare. Overall...a good game for beginners...bright, jumbled hidden object scenes with some interaction, clear graphics, choice of screen resolution...a good map that allows you to jump, so you don't use shoe leather...but the story does get a bit graphic at the end. With that in mind, I would recommend the game to someone who wants to take the leap into the hidden object genre.
Welcome to Top Secret Finders. Your first mission is to save a small town, uncover the truth about a government conspiracy and stop the villain in his tracks!
This game was fun to play, but it was over way too quickly to suit me. I prefer a game that will give me a couple of evening's gameplay...I finished this game in just about three hours...and I didn't skip anything. However, don't overlook the game because I think it's short...you might not think so. The options list was pretty short....cursor, music, sound, and voice sliders, custom cursor...two methods of gameplay, and I chose the regular mode, as I like the sparkles. The storyline is interesting..you need to find out what happened to the entire population of a town..and you do this as a special agent in a future organization that deals in that sort of thing. Graphics are good, as are the animations, but the hidden object scenes were a bit rough now and then. Some items were very small and in dark places, while a few other scenes had the light-filtering thing going on. Light is filtered in and you can see the dust particles floating...and it does a pretty good job of covering up some items. I had to tilt my laptop screen to darken things up a little. If I couldn't find things, the hint button worked very well, both in and out of the hidden object scenes. The hint button was really very obliging. If you get stuck and you aren't sure where or what to do next, click the hint button, and it will show you where you should go and allow you to "jump" to the area. That was great! Puzzles were skippable in a pretty short time and none presented a really hard challenge...some were different from what you usually see and some weren't...there were the regular "hook up the wires" types and the type where you use a schematic to turn dials and switches...nothing too mind-boggling in any of the puzzles, but they were fun. The music wasn't too bad, but I almost always turn the music down in any game I play, so check out the music for yourself. The game has bad guys, fun puzzles, a nifty hint system, plenty of hidden object scenes ( and I like those!), good graphics and animations. The down side...too short and some murky hidden object scenes. I used PCC to get the game and I'm glad I did. I would have been a bit irked if I had paid for the game to have it end as quickly as it did. However...if you would like a game that would be a good introduction to the hidden object genre and don't want to delve into something like a ravenhearst sage..try this game, or, if you need a game to fill a card and want something that is entertaining, try this game. I really enjoyed it and I think you might, too.
Rescue a young girl from the Penumbra Motel. Solve puzzles, unravel a long standing mystery of death and disappearances in this heart-pounding adventure game!
To begin with, I'm a hidden object addict who loves the hidden object scenes in a hidden object game. This game has NO hidden object scenes...at all...not one. I knew this before I played the game. I knew there was stuff to find as you rambled around that would enable you to go forward in the game. There were hidden objects to find...sort of. Most scenes contained at least one inventory item that would be used in that scene or another...either before or after playing the scene you're in. The story is a usual one....you have stopped for a moment and allowed a young girl to get some snacks...and she's kidnapped..and you have to rescue her from an evil-looking fellow. The scenes are well done...I played in casual mode, as I'd never attempted a game like this before. There were sparkles to lead me to areas of interest and I found them helpful. There were real actors in the game and they did well...the dialogue and characters were in sync so the words didn't continue when the character stopped "talking". There is a great deal of running around to do, so wear your hiking boots. There are creepy skeletons, deserted buildings...and just about every door or gate you encounter is locked..lol...but we expect that in a game like this. The puzzles were good and they were fairly frequent. I didn't utilize the hint system much. I got bogged down a bit from time to time and did use the strategy guide much, much more in this game than any other I've played. I think that's just because I wasn't familiar with a game that is all "adventure" and no "hidden object"...as this was my very first one. I'm sure those who play adventure games all of the time would call this more of a hidden object game...so I really don't know which category it should fall into. I got three evenings out of this game...about 7 hours...but I'm one who doesn't rush through a game...so others may find they can finish in less time. My 7 hours included the short bonus play that is available after completing the regular game. The music wasn't great...it was rather light-hearted...I would have preferred something more eerie, as the locations were spooky and I would have liked some spooky music. To me, the soundtrack reminded me of the sort of music you hear when watching a silent Charlie Chaplain movie...not appropriate for this game, in my opinion. It wasn't unpleasant...just not what I would consider the best choice for this game. So..is it a hidden object game?...No..not the type I always enjoy. Is it an adventure game?....Yes...you have a goal and must sally forth, using what you find to help you out to reach the end. To me, that is an adventure game. Was it fun to play?....For the most part, yes.....it was creepy and I love creepy. I got to play some puzzles I hadn't seen before and I enjoyed interacting with "real" people. Would I recommend the game to folks like me who really prefer the more traditional hidden object game? No. Would I recommend the game to folks like me who might try an adventure-type game for the first time? Yes, I would..and I will...but only to those who won't miss the hidden object scenes. I enjoyed it...you might, too. Don't let the lack of hidden object scenes let you miss out on a pretty darn good game.
Malice was, overall, fun to play. Fun may not really be the best word...it was engaging...it piqued my curiosity...and it was a bit creepy with skeletons and eerie locations and dark places that hold who knows what. Okay..fun may be the right word, after all, as these are the sorts of things that qualify as "fun" for me. The options list was pretty much the same as we always see...and you had sliders for things like music and environmental sounds...like rain and wind....wonderfully done, by the way....rain falling and hitting metal, wind groaning through barren treetops...all sounded very real. The hint sytem worked both in and out of hidden object scenes. You even get a special bit of help from a wonderful character...a most helpful fellow. The hint recharged fairly quickly and was easy to see...not one of those hint systems that affords you a two-second glimmer on the screen. The story is a bit creepy...you need to find your sister, who has returned to a place that doesn't hold good memories...so you question why she's returned..and you have to find her...save her....and there are many great locations to check. Hidden object scenes were junkpile for the most part, and some items were quite small...but the hint system worked quite well....so no worries there. Game play moved along pretty well and I got about 7 hours of game play..which is great,as far as I am concerned. The ending....not what you expect....so, play until you get there and decided for yourself....You'll find lots of locked doors, lots of creepy places, and you'll need your good walking shoes...and there is a lot of back and forth. All in all..a good game..not great..but only because the hidden object scenes were not the best I've seen....so, play Malice if you like a game with a good story and an immersive quality that involves you way more than some other games.
Overall - a nice game. Not a lot of annoying music,,,none at all, really, outside of a creepy piano riff now and then, and the environment sounds were well done - birds, rain,wind..all of that..nicely done. You even have the option of no sound. Graphics are well done, also, and hidden object scenes, though a bit junky, were fine, with the exception of one. Towards the end of the game, the sparkles indicated a hidden object scene (I was playing in casual mode - one of two choices the player has), so I clicked on the sparkles. There in front of me was a hidden object scene I hadn't played before with"0/20..(or 25..lol) but NO indication about what I was supposed to be looking for! I just started randomly clicking and got no penalty and finally found something that disappeared when I clicked on it. Once that happened, I knew what I was supposed to be looking for. There are a few scenes that ask you to find a certain number of one object, but most are the regular junkpile scenes. The mini-games and puzzles are equipped with a skip button, in the event you come across one you don't care for. I found the games and puzzles enjoyable and not difficult, if given a little thought. I did feel that there could have been clearer directions on a couple of the puzzles, but I muddled through. The game moved along fairly well, and was engaging, but, as I said in my review title, you do a lot of traveling. Be prepared for a lot of back and forth and visiting the same sites several times over. The only real negative I have about the game is the very last bit - you have to go back and forth many times...get a clue, wander off to find the thing, go back to where you were, do what you're supposed to do, get another clue, wander around and get the item...you do this several times, and even I found it a bit annoying...and I usually like a game that runs long. This game did provide me with three evenings of game play - about 8 hours. Keep in mind that I play slowly - really look around scenes - really take my time, so others may not have the game go so long. If you are looking for a game with an interesting storyline, long play, a lot of traveling (with no map to jump with...I can't recall seeing a map at all...), and just enough creepiness to spook you now and then, this game would be for you. I even felt a tinge of sadness near the end of the game...but I won't give that away. Try it - I think you'll like it.
This game was different in a way I cannot really explain. It wasn't a negative thing - I really enjoyed the game. It was just different. It was usual in several ways: options were offered for music, sound effect, screen size..the usual. The music was unremarkable and I found one sound rather annoying. Every so often, there would be this rather wheezy air-like sound as if you'd stepped on a bagpipe..no music or squeals, just an annoying whoosh of air that got on my nerves for some reason. Graphics were great...clean, crisp, and colorful, for the most part. There were a couple of scenes that were more gray or black and white and appeared more "drawn" than others, but most were very colorful and the hidden object scenes were clear and items were pretty easy to find. The hint button was available both in and out of hidden object scenes. There was a journal that stored all of the clippings you collect throughout the game to carry the story along and there was no map. There was not much need for one, as the hint button would let you know where to go if direction is needed. Puzzles and mini-games were not as challenging as more experienced gamers might prefer, but they were just right for me, but a couple could have provided a bit more instruction than was given. There were voice-overs that were done well and the "creepy" fellow's voice was that type that could send shivers up your spine - much like the crazy person in the "Dorian Gray Syndrome" game. In the story, you are drugged with something that could prove fatal and you're in this asylum of sorts, wandering about trying to save a young girl. That's the main mission, but it tends to get a bit lost as you go from one hidden object scene to another and you also tend to lose the whole plot now and then. Overall, the game was very enjoyable, good length...about 6 and a half hours for me, good characters/voice-overs, a decent story, good graphics, and a bit on the creepy and scary side. If you enjoy that kind of game, this one would be perfect. Throughout the game, however, were some list items that I would call mislabled. One that pops to mind is that you are asked to find a "vice" and it turns out to be a C-clamp. There were several items mislabled, but the hint button helps.
Overall, the game was fun. There are the usual options of sound, music, and cursor, and the not-so-usual options for brightness and mouse speed. There is a choice of game play and I played the "easy" mode. The music almost wasn't there. In a nightclub scene, there was appropriate nightclub music, that sort of thing, but the overall music was a series of notes, more than music..just the slightly creepy stuff you'd hear in a b-movie while the hero is exploring an eerie place..not unpleasant, just unnoticeable. The graphics are wonderful - clear and crisp and the hidden object scenes were clear and most objects were easy to find. The hint button worked within the hidden object scenes by clicking on an item in the list so you could see where it was. There is a journal and a map that will allow you to "jump" to different places, but you won't have that until you've played a little of the game. It's the kind of map I really enjoy, but there were a couple of times during the game where it could have given me a tiny bit more information, as I get turned around easily...geographically challenged..lol. The games and puzzles were interesting and a couple were quite different than I've seen in other games...not mind-bending, just unique and enjoyable. The voice-overs were well done. The reason I say it's almost worth the $6.99 is I consider the game rather short. At the end, the game told me I had finished in two hours and thirty-three minutes, and I only skipped one "revolve the tiles " puzzle. I am also a slow player...not that kind of slow...the "I take my time" kind of slow":) If you are looking for a game that provides a couple of hours of fun without the dark and spooky stuff (although the bad guy is a bit spooky), this is the game for you, but you might want to wait until there is a sale on or the game becomes a daily deal or catch-of-the-week. With a slightly lower price, this game would be just great. I do, however, because of the good gameplay, the great graphics, and the interesting puzzles, recommend the game.
