Positives: Very challenging, with minimal instruction on what needs done or how to do it. Lovely atmospheric, immersive visuals. Old-school adventure with freedom to wander around and explore. Unique, unusual game. Large file, lengthy game. Possibly historical and educational (I cannot verify that).
Negatives: Awkward gameplay and use of inventory. Puzzles and tasks require arbitrary actions and sequences, rather than logical. No direction, instructions, or hints. Half a dozen items remain in inventory throughout the game, never to be used again.
I completed the entire game, so I did become accustomed to the controls and gameplay, but I still didn’t like the game. On principle, I hate using walkthroughs and hints. I play games and solve puzzles because I enjoy the challenge, so I don’t like ‘cheating’ with walkthroughs. This game proved impossible for me and most other players (according the other reviews) without resorting to a walkthrough. When a game cannot be played without Internet cheats, there is a flaw in the game design.
Here are some examples. After being told to get a reed, you have to wander around and try to pick up every tuft of weeds you see until you happen upon the correct one. Inventory contains items like: twig, stick, gnarly tree, skin, piece of skin, bladder, animal fat, strap, flint; and you are expected to somehow know the correct items to place on a rock, and the correct sequence, in order to create a useful tool. After assembling a puzzle, the random next step that you’re supposed to figure out is picking up the item and looking around the room while holding it. Things that don’t work when you try them suddenly work later on, after returning to talk to someone again, so even though you tried everything earlier, you now have to try everything again.
I think there are two ways to complete the game: use a walkthrough OR be willing to try clicking on every stick, rock, tree, leaf, and blob, in every different sequence, over and over again. My primary complaint about the game is that, despite the lovely setting and challenging puzzles, they forgot to make the game FUN!
I don't recommend this game.

Not awful, but not good either. Even in advanced mode, sparkle indicators are plentiful. Puzzles/mini games are so easy that they are not really puzzles – more like boring reorganizing exercises. And now for the hidden object scenes: (1) images are poorly illustrated and somewhat washed out, (2) interactive objects (using one object to reveal or create the one you need) are not reasonable or clever or logical, and (3) when you finally give up and use the hint, you see that the object was so buried or dark or unrecognizable that you never would have found it on your own. Overall, the game is playable, but there are so many better games out there that this one is not worthwhile.
I don't recommend this game.

This game was fun, long, and not too hard. Hidden object scenes are challenging, but still manageable without using the hint. I was able to complete the game in advanced mode without using any hints or walkthroughs. It is easy to figure out each objective and find the needed objects. None of the mini-games were particularly challenging. Actually, I accidentally solved a couple of them with mindless trial-and-error clicking, without ever determining the objective of the mini-game. There were some mini-games requiring basic math, assembling fragmented pictures, remembering sequences, and ordering colored marbles.
Positives: Very lengthy game. Nice visuals. Hidden object scenes are challenging but not impossible. Variety of mini-games.
Negatives: If you attempt to use the wrong item, you’ll be told what type of item is meant to be used there, which is basically an unrequested hint. Lots of walking back and forth between scenes, although not traversing the entire game each time.
The game is very long, many hours. It is somewhat divided into a few separate large regions, such that when you’ve completed all the tasks in one large area, you take a journey to a new area, and you cannot go back. This is artfully done, as in the transportation needed to reach the new area is disabled upon arrival. This was convenient for such a large game, and I appreciate that it was worked into the story rather than displaying a message like “Location Complete.” That said, there is a fair bit of walking back-and-forth and back-and-forth within each large area.
Overall, the game is not as long or rich as Return to Ravenhurst, but you still get much more game for your money here than you do on the average HO game.
I recommend this game!

I like the logical brain teaser idea of this game. It requires you to think about physics, gravity, inertia, and timing in order to figure out a solution to each level. The first few levels are pretty easy, but they become more difficult later into the game.
However, it wasn’t really fun. The game added elements for the purpose of making it interesting and making each level different. Those extras didn’t make it more challenging, but rather more awkward and tedious. For example, in addition to clearing the screen of the correct objects, you also collect jewels which could be hidden behind anything, so you must do a pointless click on every single item on the screen just to check for hidden jewels. This has nothing to do with logical problem solving. And in the later levels, you have to scroll the screen from side to side in order to see the rest of the layout of that level. I assume this was added so that the levels could be bigger, but it’s just awkward.
I only played the 1 hour trial, but I easily got through 38 of the 60 levels in that time. I really enjoy physical brain teasers that require logical thinking to solve, but I’ve found better elsewhere, like the Flash game “Splitter,” and the first two Wonderland games (many advanced levels really require a thought-out approach).
I don't recommend this game.

Game was fun, not very difficult. One of the things I like about this particular game is that instead of finding a single, useful object in every hidden-object scene, you’ll find multiple objects which you then assemble into creative devices. These devices are Rube-Goldberg-ish fantastical inventions, so that’s fun.
I recommend this game!

So far, this is the best hidden object game I’ve played. My favorite part of these games are the puzzles (rather than the hidden object scenes), and Return to Ravenhearst has lots of puzzles. This a massive game; it just keeps going and going, which is great. The storyline is pretty standard, not bad. I enjoy that you have to figure out for yourself how to accomplish little challenges. For example, in the very beginning, a cat is in your way. The game doesn’t tell you to go find the catnip (not a spoiler). You just keep playing, and eventually you’ll find something that you can use. A good game, nice and long, fun puzzles.
I recommend this game!

One of the best games I’ve played. Very high quality design and graphics. The game is unusually well crafted. Storyline is clever and amusing, with lots of little jokes about the inner workings of computers, internet, and hacking. If you enjoy movies like Hackers and Antitrust, you’ll enjoy this game. The gameplay is fun, intuitive, fairly relaxing. Most levels are easy, but some require outside-the-box, logical thinking. The music and environments change for nice variety throughout the levels. You can see that a lot of thought went into the making of this masterpiece.
If I had to compare this game to others, I would liken it to the first two Wonderland games. The comparison is based on fun factor, colorfulness, and the type of physical logic involved.
Overall, and outstanding game. Cohesive, moderately challenging, and fun, fun, fun.
I recommend this game!

Eh, not very good. The puzzles are very easy, as is figuring out what needs done next. The game keeps telling me what I need to do and where to go, and I can’t disable that. The hint button keeps flashing in the corner – distracting. Storyline is fine. The challenging part is in the hidden object scenes, but that’s because the simple line-illustration style makes it hard to discern objects out of context. For example, it is hard to find a ball (rendered with a circle line outline) in a scene with a lot of circles. Overall, too simple and easy.
I don't recommend this game.
