This game was really disappointing. It would probably be fine for a beginner, but it was so well-rated by the BFG community that I expected a lot more. The puzzles were simplistic, the graphics and music subpar, and the storyline practically non-existent. The villain was also decidedly NOT scary if you are over the age of 7. The standard edition only took me about 3 hrs to complete and ended abruptly without a satisfying conclusion, but based on the other factors, I'm glad I didn't spring for the CE. Ice Rose might be a decent freebie for a beginner or a kid, but I can't recommend it to anyone looking for an engaging story or challenging game.
I don't recommend this game.

Disappointing follow up to Dorian Grey

This is a slow, boring follow up to the excellent Dorian Grey (the games are unrelated). Lonely Hearts Murders starts off with an interesting premise, but the gameplay is interrupted by so many long, dull, and overly melodramatic animated cut scenes that it feels more like an (terrible) interactive animated film than a HOG. The puzzles were too easy, my inventory barely ever got over 5 items, and the map isn't interactive, so there was a LOT of running about. The animation and graphics were fine, but the storyline was so sluggish that the otherwise disappointing ending was actually a relief. There are too many better games on BF to waste your time with this one. Keep looking.
I don't recommend this game.

Really enjoyed playing this one - just the right amount of HOS, good puzzles, and a great storyline with well-placed cut scenes. I especially loved the animations with the creepy little man!
I was all set to give it 5 stars until I ran into the *terrible* ending. After hours and hours of play, I expect a more substantial conclusion. This was just a big disappointment. :(
If you enjoy the journey, the SE is fine, but if you want to arrive at the destination, you'll need to get the CE.
I recommend this game!

Good game and reasonably challenging, but it begins to drag by the third or fourth act. I had trouble staying interested long enough to finish it. The bonus material in the CE was good, but in retrospect, I could have been happy with the SE because I was tired of playing it long before I got to the extra chapter, which isn't needed to complete the main story.
Overall, this isn't a bad game by any means, it's just didn't hold my attention as well as I'd hoped it would.
On a side note, I did experience an annoying technical problem: the Mac version frequently crashed on launch although it would generally run the second or third time I tried to open it. Not a game killer, but definitely something to fix.
I recommend this game!

Good storyline and plot, just the right amount of HOS, nice graphics and music. No map, but none needed. Hints point you in the right direction, but give nothing else away. I especially appreciated the attention to detail in the HOS - graphics are complex and found items stay found in subsequent visits to the same scene. Plot is a little cheesy and the puzzles aren't that difficult, but the game is fun and held my attention, so I didn't mind. SE has decent ending (with teaser for the bonus round), so you aren't left totally hanging if you don't buy the CE. Maybe a tad short, but would still recommend!
I recommend this game!

This game looked promising during the trial, but ended up being pretty boring. No HOS, just find-and-use object seeking and some puzzles. It wasn't challenging at all. Most objects are used within the nearest 2-3 locations, although this certainly reduces running around and backtracking. Story ends abruptly with minimal plot resolution and plenty of loose ends, but it's not worth buying the CE. I wanted to like this one, but just couldn't get into it. :(
I don't recommend this game.

Really enjoyed this one! Good graphics, and game play; storyline flows well. Minimal use of diary, no map, but none needed because the game (and map) is divided into chapters, a technique that minimizes needless backtracking and running about (much appreciated!). The SE brings the story to a satisfying conclusion, but I enjoyed the game play so much that I was glad I'd purchased the CE and had another bonus chapter to play. My only (minor) complaints were that the music felt repetitive after the first hour or so, some of the voice actors were pretty bad, and a few of the puzzles were so easy that they seemed like busy work instead of an actual challenge. None of these issues seriously detract from the game, however, and I'd highly recommend this title in either CE or SE version. I'm looking forward to the next game from this publisher!
I recommend this game!

Perfectly OK SE. Not terribly complex or challenging, but no major problems. Fairly linear map, combination of HOS and find-and-use silhouetted object scenes. Not quite as good as previous Dark Tales games, but a decent choice for a free game token. SE has complete ending, wouldn't bother with CE.
I don't recommend this game.

Absolutely loved this HOPA!! It has a great balance of HOS and puzzles, beautiful graphics, and a highly engaging storyline. The cut scenes and videos blend well with game play and help to move the story along. The narration and character development are thoughtful and surprisingly nuanced for a video game. The journals and maps are artistically drawn and super-helpful because puzzles often reference clues you got a long time before, which makes the game rich and complex. The hint system is also appreciated for providing directions without spoilers.
Overall, just one of the best HOPAs I've played in a long time. The SE was a complete story with satisfactory ending, but if I'd known how much I'd like this game, I probably would have sprung for the CE just to get some extra gameplay. Highly recommend!
I recommend this game!

Maple Creek is a very good HOPA, although it's a bit heavy on the hidden objects and light on the puzzles. The storyline carries the action from start to finish and like other reviewers, I enjoyed the extra attention given to the detective work aspect of the game with the evidence wall. The main downsides for me were that there was a LOT of running around, especially at the end, and that the numerous HOS started to get in the way as the game neared its conclusion. It was still a fun adventure though!
The SE ends with a "to be continued..." notice, but I'm not sure whether that means that there will be a sequel, or that the CE more completely wraps things up. In either case, the SE was long and enjoyable and had a decent enough ending that it still felt like a complete game on its own.
I recommend this game!
