Wow--that's 4 hours I'll never get back. I kept expecting it to get better, but it just didn't. H.P. Lovecraft is rolling over in his grave somewhere.
mini-games were easy-peasy, and a little cheesy.
HOP also very easy.
Though based on a Lovecraft story, had none of the suspense.
I don't recommend this game.

And I've played some stinkers. The level of frustration this game produced was far in excess of the fun it provided. I wouldn't even recommend it to my worst enemy as payback. Storyline is almost nonexistent; what is there is boring. By the time I finished (quit), I didn't care about the victim or finding his killer. Gameplay is clunky and awful. Less a "puzzle" game than a badly realized hidden object game. Of the few actual puzzles, several were "been there, done that" familiar. In Easy mode, the hint system FORCES players to use their first hint, even if they don't want to. Clues do not respond well to being clicked on; (in one scene I clicked footprint repeatedly in various areas of the print and the game did not respond. When I gave up and used a hint--it showed the exact spot I had been selecting.)
I don't recommend this game.

Having played all the Aveyond games, I know I can give a fairly objective review. The bad: visuals/graphics are basic and very old school; the characters can only walk in straight lines and make 90 degree turns to avoid obstacles or attack monsters (think Pacman) .Game view is from a roughly 45 degree angle down. 3D doesn't exist. Music--well, think Pacman again. Characters are not voiced, so you have to read the dialogue. Battles are pulled off the game board and proceed on a turn by turn basis.
The good: well, I loved these games. As in more sophisticated games, choice of companions effects gameplay in such a way that it is wise to keep all of their equipment up-to-date and to change up from time to time. The characters are all quirky, the plot twists occasionally, and the enemies are interesting; so much so that I forget I'm playing in 2D. I eagerly away the next installment (hint, hint, hint).
I recommend this game!

Puzzles were often difficult, but I stuck with them and managed to succeed. Storyline was interesting, though the running back and forth to accomplish 'tasks' for people got a bit frustrating, mostly because I'd miss a clue and have to go back for it. Just enough suspense to go along with the puzzles and plot. Although the murders were not graphic, some of the images were disturbing enough that younger gamers should not be allowed to play alone.
I recommend this game!

that being said, this one wasn't too bad. I enjoyed the mini games and puzzles. Love that the collector's edition allows me to go back in an play some of the puzzles. Storyline was fair, if somewhat fantastical; not too sure the real Sherlock Holmes would have bought into the storyline; he's too logical. Story/"movie" scenes are all still drawings, no real interaction. Still, it was a fun game; finished in just over 6 hours of playtime. liked it, but, if you don't like hidden object, it'll be a bit aggravating.
I recommend this game!
