Note: This review is based on the Darkarta: A Broken Heart's Quest Collectors Edition. I completed the entire game in around 6 hours.
Darkarta: A Broken Heart's Quest is a fairly good game. The visuals and sound are stellar; This game has top-notch production value. The voice acting is also well done and all the main performances are well-done. The environments are highly detailed and pleasant to look at, and each environment is varied enough to not look "samey".
The Hidden-Object sections (which were not as oft occurring as I would have liked) and puzzles are engaging and well-designed. As a veteran HOPA player, the puzzles actually managed to keep me challenged and thinking at a high level. They do reuse puzzle types a little too often, but it's not enough to get tedious.
The story is the one area where the game stumbles. I have read several reviews which praised the story, however I did not find it engaging at all. I know some players don't care about story, and just play the games for the hidden object scenes and puzzles, but story plays a big part in my overall enjoyment
In a nutshell, if you enjoy challenging puzzles and well-designed hidden object scenes (but don't really care about story), then you will enjoy this game. However, if story is a big factor for you, then I would pass.
Note: The following review is based on the full Bonfire Stories: Heartless CE. I completed the game in about 4 hours.
Bonfire Stories: Heartless surprised me a lot. Going in, I expected a traditional "horror" HOPA (Hidden Object Puzzle Adventure), however it's unique story, and a very satisfying "surprise" twist ending, made it much more memorable.
The story is BS; Heartless is pretty unique. It starts out pretty traditionally, however it slowly turns into something more interesting. It isn't revolutionary, by any means, but it is more than compelling enough to keep you interested throughout the game's roughly 4 hour duration. Also, there is a very cool "twist" at the end that I did not expect.
Visually, the game is very well done. The atmosphere is spot on and the locations and environments range from creepy woods to gothic-pastoral architecture. The characters are designed well and I especially loved the design of the masks. Sound is also very good. The environmental sounds and voice acting are what you would expect from a top-tier developer.
Gameplay is fun and engaging at best and typical at worst. Some of the puzzles were very unique and challenging, while others were your basic HOPA fair and easy to solve.
Overall Bonfire Stories: Heartless is a strong addition to the series and I strongly recommend it to those who enjoy horror and atmospheric games.
Dreadful Tales; The Space Between is a worthy entry in the series and one i really enjoyed playing.
The visuals are very well done and the developers did a really nice job of conveying atmosphere. White the game is not "scary" by any stretch, it's still a good atmosphere.
The Hidden Object scenes and puzzles are well done. While the Hidden Object scenes aren't very difficult, some of the puzzles left me scratching my head for a bit. They add in some different types of mini-games to mix things up and they are a nice change of pace.
The story is pretty by the numbers. This is probably the only aspect of the game that I would consider lacking. It's very formulaic and predictable.
Overall, I would recommend Dreadful Tales:The Space Between, but if story is what you are looking for, look elsewhere.
As another reviewer stated, I'm not going to go in depth regarding the mechanics or story because others have done it excellently. My review will be much more of my broad impressions of the story and mechanics. This review is based off playing the entire CE.
The story in this game is fantastic, indeed one of the best stories I've ever seen in a HOPA (Hidden Object Puzzle Adventure). It absolutley kept me invested and entertained throughout my entire 3 hour playtime. The story is greatly assisted by the visuals which are stellar. Every realm is very detailed, unique, and memorable.
The gameplay is what you would expect of the genre, with some unexpected twists added to the formula. The puzzles are good, albeit I wish they would have been a little harder. The hidden object scenes are very well put together and I really enjoyed them, depsite how scarce they are.
The voice acting is what you would expect, it's not terrible, but not fantastic. It gets the job done, but, you will be enjoying the game so much, you won't really notice it's not as good as the rest of the package.
The only downside, that I can think of is the length. It's a pretty short game so, if you are looking for a multi-day experience, you might consider looking elsewhere. If you are less experienced with the genre, the game might take you longer.
Overall, I HIGHLY recommend this game. If you are considering buying it, or you enjoyed the demo, just do it. You won't regret it!
