This is my review based on playing the demo version.
It seems that HOPA games has been getting less of a fanfare against other mainstream games. Fortunately, Elephant Games has risen to the challenge with this latest offering.
The storyline to begin with is intriguing, something that is very much relevant nowadays about a mysterious bar called Crossroads that appears only to those who have hit a--ahem!--a crossroad in their lives (and if we're to be honest, this bar would be packed full with how things are going nowadays!). Our main character, Alex, a social worker found himself lost and somehow, ended up in a seemingly empty bar with only the bartender, Mistress Eve, present to entertain him. Mistress Eve offered Alex some comic books but it's up to Alex to make the right decision on the outcome of each comic book. Would he make the right decision? You, player, would him decide.
The graphics and the characters that one would encounter on the demo version are realistic. The mini games have a reasonable level of challenge. The warning is accurate, some scenes can give one that eerie, unsettling feeling so if you're someone of nervous disposition, you might want to try the demo and see if you can take this game. This is a game that makes us confront our worst nightmares. It's a game that can bring out the best and the worst out of us. Personally, at the end of the demo, I felt like "Yes, give me more!"
Elephant games, you've done a very good job!
I recommend this game!

Played this game and loved the storyline (although, seriously, how can one character be so clueless?).
I love the puzzles and it doesn't feel so repetitive unlike other HOPA games that I've played before although some mini-games are quite challenging. But then again, this is just a personal opinion and maybe other players who are into more challenging puzzles might enjoy this.
All in all, a fantastic game that's more supernatural than scary.
I recommend this game!

After years of inactivity, I decided to pick on my HOPA hobby and this is amongst the ones that I've just picked randomly. And boy, it was a great. Never have I played a game where I am not only moved by the soundtrack, but also the story in the game. Unless you have a heart of stone then, this would greatly move you. This isn't your ordinary HOPA where you can easily guess how and where to find things so it's very refreshing in the HOPA genre. Bravo Artifex Mundi!
I recommend this game!

Cadenza returns with another story of love, music, betrayal, crime and death set in New Orleans. You, the player, play the bride to be (and heroine) preparing for the wedding when your beloved fiance Anthony appeared to be caught in a shady business along with some friends. Eventually, Anthony ends up as a victim and it's up to you to race against time to save his life. Main thing that I loved about this game is that the storyline is more improved and more well thought of compared to its predecessor. The graphics appear to be more polished. Not that the first Cadenza is shoddy but this one seemed to have stepped up in the game.
Few FROGs here but rather unique in its approach.
The voiceovers are not wooden (I felt like I'm in a mini movie!) and you get to involve in deciding on what actions to take which gives the game a more realistic and more proactive approach. The music: I think it's one of the pillars of this game's popularity. A little less pronounced compared to the first Cadenza game (where it's more prominently featured) but the seductive and soothing vibe is still there. What can I say? Encore!!
I recommend this game!

Malice is one of the games I picked out of curiosity. I usually follow sequel games so this is a bit of a departure. You play Victoria whose sister, Emily, had gone missing and was believed to have returned to the now abandoned private school somewhere in an island. As you try to find out why Emily went there, you will also realize that there's somebody else there who has a different style of "updating with old friends".
The setting was not too scary although some of the mini games are very challenging. With the help of a robot (which I find charming and not annoying), you could lift or move heavy objects.
One shortcoming of this homecoming is that the ending seems to be a cliffhanger. What happened afterwards?
Anyway, for those who want to relive their high school days with less awkwardness and more of thriller-creepy type, then this game is for you.
I recommend this game!

You, as DP's master detective, returns to investigate another anomaly this time near Crete, Greece. A purple tide had been spotted to suddenly appear and caused destruction in its path. Somehow, a sea monster (a nasty, if not uglier, cousin of Nessy?) is involved.
Like any DP game, FROGs are abound which may be a treat for DP followers. You just have to go a bit back and forth several times between places and thankfully, it's just in good doses. However, I have a few (fish)bones to pick with this game, first, the involvement of a certain "boy" character which I personally find out of place in the story line and the setting. I mean, why him? And where are the mermaid's sisters? Somehow, the storyline, for me, ran a bit thin because I just finished the game for the sake of the game. I somehow felt no sympathy for the Little Mermaid and her kingdom and even the Sea Goddess. They could have probably developed the Mermaid's character a bit more or turn the Sea Goddess a bit more evil. Anyway, DP fans, submerge yourselves into this game and sea, I mean, see for yourselves.
I recommend this game!

After years of being away, you (the player) returns to New Orleans to visit your Dad who owns a famous Jazz club. Upon arrival at the club, you bumped into some guy in a white suit at the entrance. Inside the club, you are shocked to find everyone--including your dad--seemingly lost in the haze. What happened? As your character looks for clues on to what happened in the club, you learn about your dad and Aunt Adele's band The Dixie Peppers and how one by one, some members of the group are killed or taken (this is one of the rather vague parts of the story). The story has a good start but some twists in the story sort of adds confusion instead of explanation and I have a gnawing idea that somewhere along the way, the creators can't decide whether to take the storyline to a supernatural or a crime thriller mystery path hence, the game kind of stumbles on that aspect. There's a bit of FROG elements but luckily, not much of going back and forth between places.
What many BFG players who have played this game would agree with me is the music. Wonderful. Mesmerizing. It seems to bring life to this game as if you're drawn to its world.
Despite the pointed out weakness, I have to say that Cadenza stands as my favourite HOG/Adventure game. Wonderful! I'm looking forward to playing and finishing Cadenza 2.
I recommend this game!

Ok, so my review title may be unsettling. The storyline is basically out of a whodunnit detective story. No supernatural or fantasy related elements...well, with the exception of creepy dolls that appear all throughout the story.
The story follows you, the female half of private investigating team (sorry male BFG players!), and her partner, Crocodile Dundee--I mean, Detective Owen (I blame his dashing Aussie accent), as you head off to an island where an asylum is located after a distressed phone call to your office was traced coming from there. While outside, a doctor, Dr. Crow, was pushed out of the window right before your eyes. It's up to you and Owen (obviously, your character will do most of the dirty work) to find out who killed Dr. Crow and why you were sent there.
What I liked about this game is there's less back and forth journey amongst the rooms which I find irritating and tiring in some HOG/Adventure games. There's no FROG elements here so if that's part of your thrill, this game isn't for you.
As I said, this is mainly a whodunnit crime thriller game so expect some blood and (kinda) graphic depictions of violence and murder which some players may find squeamish. You have been warned.
If like me, you're into crime thriller stories, then this is your cup of tea!
I recommend this game!

Fell in love with this game since I started playing the demo.
I suppose the title was changed from Moulin Rouge to Crimson Cabaret out of copyright issue, right? But still, the Crimson Cabaret is obviously based on the famous Parisian cabaret so, a rose, by any other name, is still a rose. And in this game, a deadly rose.
Yes, yes, it wasn't so much realistic (well, a few characters are based on real life individuals) such as the actions and flow of the story but THIS IS A FREAKIN' HIDDEN OBJECT GAME AND NOT A FRIGGING REALITY SHOW! We play this game for the sake of the game itself and not whether or not it's illogical that we didn't get arrested for picking out stuff in somebody's place. Okay, enough of the rant. The music is engaging and somehow, puts additional thrill to the game. Don't turn down the music when you play, guys. It's brill, I promise.
The hidden object mini games are great and some non-HOGs are quite a challenge.
Played this game and I must say: BRAVO, EIPIX!

Although I've played this game years ago, I find that it's simple and yet has enough charm to draw in the player. The story is about a woman (the player) who keeps getting haunted by nightmares and in order to find out about what these nightmares are about, went to a psychoanalyst and gets hypnotized to get to the subconscious and thus 'open the doors of the mind'. No dramas like villains who will hinder you from solving what your nightmares are about, just pure unlocking the 'secrets of your 'family'. I think for anyone looking for 'horror' themed HOGs, this isn't recommended but if you're into psychological drama, then this game would be sufficient enough. I remember playing this on my old Macbook so I just hope that the current game could cater to newer Mac specs as well.
I recommend this game!
